- Bitterblack Island in Dragon's Dogma, is a very dark and mysterious place. Over countless lifetimes it has called out to Arisen, drawn them to its shore, and then seen to it that they never leave. But these Halls of the Damned have another victim as well - The Corrupt Pawns.

It's crazy how the corrupted pawns you face before fighting the Ur Dragon, are different versions of pawns you crossed paths with along the way... 🐉
One of them was a pawn I used for like 8 hours before she dropped into water. She also one shot me with brain splitter
My personal theory is that their masters were the latest victims of the Dragon.

Dragon's dogma is one of my favourite games ever, im glad to see people still give it attention, its Sad to know 60% of the planned game was scrapped and tbh after completing the game you can see it in a few places like the big underground arena which has gates that you can interact with, the arena is huga but only used for 1 single armored cyclops and also when you're at the walls you can see to the other side of the gate but never get to travel there, its sad to know that an amazing game like this could've been so much more but all these planned ideas also keep my hopes up for a Dragon's dogma 2 which i hope can give me the same experience I've had with Dragon's dogma.
Actually In the arena you can fight a hydra if you come back after you kill grigori so give it a visit next time you play

The first time I saw the Corrupted Pawns and knew about their fate, I wanted to hold my Pawn's hand. She was my Arisen's ally and best homie since the very start and I got attached.

Of all the arisens we have met along the way, I think Olra is the most harmless one. She doesn’t carry any weapon and judging by her dialog I’m not sure if she know how to fight at all. Even Barroch, the guy who defected from his duty, is brave enough to delve into the ruins on the island and seek out materials. Olra just ... standing there. Whichever dragon that picked her must have had a sore eye and really poor judgement.
Arisen don't come weak. Olra's dragon knew what it was doing. And testament to her skills we have this bit of dialogue:
"I…I died once. Here, in this place. It was scarce a fortnight after I was first lured in. Each day brought new losses. My pawn was slain, then gradually my store of curatives dwindled. I was surrounded, body battered and broken by dark and powerful magicks. As death approached, I lifted my gaze to see the stars one final time. Yet it was not death that engulfed me then, but a strange light, far brighter than any fire of the empyrean. …past that, my memory fails."
That's right, Arisen!Olra died.
It took Bitterblack Island TWO WEEKS to kill her.
She lost her pawns. She used her healing items. She had no source of replenishment for either.
And she still lasted two weeks.
Make no mistake about it: Olra was as badass as any other Arisen.
Moreso if she really did accomplish that without weapons either.
Well that was the dialog that got me thinking she was harmless. Unlike Arcathos, who feel lonely and hallucinating but still wandering the ruin and having a sense of purpose judging by the page that he wrote to remind himself in case he forgot. And even after that, when he became the reaper. Olra’s journey was just scared, beaten and wish for death lol.
Not sure if she died at the shore, but if she did, and the ruins are such a maze that it trap Arcathos from finding a way out, then she probably didn’t wander far of the shore at all. Could’ve just sail back to Gransys if she was that close, so her main reason of death probably because running out of supplies that only last two weeks.
If she died in the ruin and eventually find her way back to the shore, other arisens probably could have found their way too, but they didn’t return, so I assume they were dead or found another resting place in the ruin. That part “each day brought new losses” along with Arcathos’s page described meeting other people give me an impression that there was quite a society being lured to the island in its early days. If Olra know about that, she probably was in a place similar to a hub or something. I always have an impression she’s like a supporting role, staying behind and providing service of transmuting weapons and armors, not someone who really get into fighting that much. The dragon probably picked her because her courage to save someone even in the face of death and sacrifice herself in the process, not because the courage to face the dragon itself.
Though, all of this are just fsn theories, she could be dangerous. She could be harmless. We have no way of knowing it. I hope dragon’s dogma 2 expanding the lore further and bring some light to the mysteries this game has. Dark souls almost have no story telling, but fans diving into the mysteries and hidden secrets and eventually create many theories that make a lot of sense, even if From Software probably never thought about it that way to begin with.
@@r.jensen7662 There's a few counter-points that can be made based on observations in-game and through Arthacos' writings.
First, she probably didn't die on the shore. Being besieged by dark magicks she probably made it a decent way into the island. The shore is remarkably devoid of enemies and even after Daimon awakens nothing that sinister gets too close to there.
Second, she lasted two weeks, a good deal of it solo, in a maze that many skilled players can't tackle before level 80.
Remember, Savan was under level 30 when he faced his dragon.
Lastly, Arthacos makes it clear in his writings that once you're in you can't find the exit. He tried for longer than anyone.
The point we're drawn to is two-fold.
1. Olra was brought to the shore supernaturally after being possessed.
2. Olra is, by this process of contextual elimination, probably the last Arisen to have visited Bitterblack Island before us.
Could that all be wrong?
Absolutely.
But I still feel that Olra is more of a badass than her amnesiac appearance suggests.

@@ThePawnedPawn I first enter the isle at level 16 so I know that pain .Eventually I managed to kill an undead dragon after fighting it for more than an hour. Get a ton of xp, the progress became easier and I finally finished the isle even before I go to meet the duke in Gransys lol.
I’d like to keep the harmless fire keeper impression too 👀 she has a lot of similarities to the fire keeper in DS3. Could she be an inspiration for the fire keeper in DS3? Calming, white hair, black outfit, providing transmuting service and asking you to break some curses. Except she isn’t blind, which is a Fromsoftware thing.

I'm pretty sure just like the lesser dragons can mind control pawns, daimon can do so at a magnitude and power thats reminiscent of something out of the 40k universe. He is after all, above the dragon in power level. Once their respective Arisen's were killed by death or daimon, he probably just took the pawns that survived.
This gave me a whole new perception of the corrupted pawns, I feel so bad for them all now 😅😂
at the start of the game the riftstones across the island are broken with the exception of the one on the surface. however they can all be restored, the only things on the island that can be returned to it's former glory aside from cursed items.
ancient corrupted pawns are so powerful they can utilize hybrid classes
Oddly just the Magick Archer vocation. It really makes me think it was no mistake they made Hannah from the anime a Magick Archer too.
These corrupted pawns were meant for the main story. They were apart of the 60% content cut that happened to the game. We were supposed to get an entire story of the old Arisen's before having to fight the Dragon. Pawns were also supposed to be able to use most of not all classes but with the content cut they were way to op so we only see Magik archers in Bitter black isle.
This is beautiful work, my friend. Makes me elated to see such care given to the best game I've ever played. Keep up the great work.

1. Bitter black isle is proof of multiple dimensions. So the show games manga n mmo all take place in different dimensions. So DD2 might not even be related to the first game.

im reallllly hoping they make a second game, with netflix adding the series i feel like it was a marketing move to see how people responded. its just such a hidden gem and definitely deserves a second game.
Yeah, I think that is what they were trying as well. Hopefully the sequel is already in production and we might get a release in 2024 due to the pandemic.

I'll definitely not see these Corrupted Pawns the same way again after this. Really puts into perspective how badass our own Arisens and Pawns are to be mentally unaffected by Bitterblack, even after traversing through it dozens of times.

I guess now we can call Bitterblack Isle 'unmoored'. I'd argue on a far smaller scale than Vermund due to only being formed from one cracked link in the chain rather than a full break but still, forsaken by The Great Will. A whole world shattered and rearranged into a grim labyrinth bound by the rage and anguish of Daimon, his own will now calling other Arisen into his living nightmare to either die and delay the cursed Cycle or to put him out of his misery.

There was more to it than the dragon. The biggest contribution Grigori (or any dragon) made was in the increased number of monsters that surrounds their coming. Whether this is something they have a hand in, or it's the Seneschal's doing, or if it's just coincidence isn't exactly known.
But naturally more monsters means more competition for less food, so they spread closer to human settlements and attack.
Otherwise man is partially responsible too. The goblins, especially, learned their violence and hatred from humans encroaching on their lands and cutting down both them and their trees.
Then the ogres used to be a race of giants that we can only assume were more intelligent and less violent. For whatever reason they gained a lot of divine disfavor and were cursed by a higher being, possibly (but not definitely) the Seneschal, to their current dimwitted and blood-thirsty fates.
You are right though, it would be an interesting video.

Tbh I think the reason some of the corrupted pawns can use hybrid skills is either a sneak peek at what the true potential of the game was supposed to be or hear me on this a sneak peak at what is to come in Dragons Dogma 2
I mean, from a programming standpoint they're just loading various bandit and soldier enemies and reskinning them.
Game does the same thing in Gran Soren with soldiers. 😁
Hey, could you do a video about the dragons found throughout gransys. Due to the dialog of the frostwrym in the dripstone cave, i suspect that someone or something is turning the people into dragons.
I can dispel some of the mystery right off here.
Lesser dragons/wyrmkin - drakes, wyrms, and wyverns - are born of Arisen who die before they reach the Seneschal.
Some would say before they even face their dragon, but there are wyrmkin in the Everfall so it feels like that isn't a requirement...
Anyways...some of these dragons seem freshly awakened, so given what we know of the timeline of draconic appearances it seems to take hundreds if not thousands of years for the process to complete.
It would still be fun to look more in-depth at it though, since we've been working on a few theories as to how it even happens. :)

A pawn I think alot about is Rochelle in the evergoual, the chamber of confusion. She has a magic armor equipped but wields a great sword. How the hell? That’s not possible? Unless she’s so old she has a class that’s completely forgotten to time
Seems to be a common thing with Pawn vocations. Rochelle is definitely an odd duck, but other than the armor-weapon mismatch I'm drawing a bit of a loss on anything groundbreaking she might bring to the lore.
But for what it's worth? She's equipmentally confused...in the Chamber of Confusion.
@@ThePawnedPawn I think it’s mostly the possibility of lost classes from days old. Like how some tainted pawns on the island can use magic archery. In my mind that says there have been skills lost to pawns. So the potential of a lost class almost feels real when I see Rochelle. A modified magic knight with a big sword would be cool for number 2!!

You forget to mention the broken riftstones in the bitterblack isles who destroyed them, its still a mystery, also broken riftstones implies that arisen and pawn should not gain access to rift, unless the arisen have so many riftcrystals and whats hanging in those clothes, whose dead bodies that belong to?

Or the pawn being Magick Archer can be explain as the original Arisen who died in BB have attempt to do the Bestow of Soul to the pawn but failed before 100% (as he is dying). Something like how PC can be bricked if the installing of new OS was interrupted aka “Corrupted”. And thus the corrupted pawn being half-Arisen half Pawn and can use Hybrid vocation yet still act like a pawn. And being in BB isnt help much well Death was born from Arisen who stuck here so yech.

Just found this game week ago saddly and completely beat this game 3 times with new game+ didn't expect i missed lot sides and hidden quest lol still this game has potential hopefully they made another arisen and new lore like the other rpgs based

@@felixchavarria8824 DD Online was an MMO only. DD2 details were leaked and will come out in late 2022 or early 2023. With pandemic conditions though, we will be lucky if it comes out in 2024

@@ThePawnedPawn thank you for that don't worry I'll keep quiet about it, and maybe this is just me but I'm also hoping that maybe the lad a necromancer vocation in dragon's dogma 2 or at least give the sorcerer spell trace the undead causing you to have a powerful cursed dragon I mean if I can't have a magic spell to control dragons minds than the best thing to do is to raise up a dead truckin already killed and turn it into a cursed dragon and that's actually a lot better than controlling a living dragon 😁
if you cant saved your pawns they are turned corrupted, im played dragon dogma online if you cant save your pawns , you are losing your pawns and they are corrupted, if you die before pawns pawns can help you heal you one time, you die then pawns going to rift not be corrupted
Thought olra was daimons pawn? Atleast I remember so from dialogue
There's two Olra's. One was Grette's pawn, who Ashe took as a pawn and lover. The other was an Arisen who happened to share a name and appearance with the pawn, and who became possessed by the pawn when she was killed on Bitterblack Island.
For whatever reason this saved her life, but she and the pawn both wound up amnesiac and unable to tell right off that they were even two separate beings.
A new channel name again? Cool.
As for the pawns you have to fightvto soawn the ur dragon, for quite awhile now ive had a theory they may have once been the ur dragons pawns. Assuming the ur dragon may have once been an arisen like other dragons.
It's possible, but it's very unlikely.
Watch those pawns carefully when you kill them. They have names. They're the pawns of other players who fought the Ur-Dragon.
So then lore makes the most sense that Urdy possessed the pawns, overcame the Arisen they belonged to, and left the pawns to guard the chamber.
But there's practically zero lore spelled out for the Ur-Dragon so it's not like there's any definite answers. Just ones we find more entertaining than others.
@@ThePawnedPawn yeah. Can't say anything for certain, though the little information we do have is fun to theorize with. I once made a post on the subreddit talking about my two major theories surrounding the ur dragon. I think I even mentioned the pawns.

After playing DD2 i noticed that the Dragonsplague pawn have some similarities with the corrupted pawn of BBI. May be a coincidence but i thinks it's interesting.

We know from other sources that many traveled to Bitterblack Island seeking treasures and fortunes. I don't believe this is a stretch with that in mind.

the All-Mother's faith, though might not predate Bitterblack Isle, does predate the mainland faiths most likely, those being the faith of "The Maker", the "Cult of Salvation" (who revere the destruction Grigori would cause), and the ancient polytheistic faith the elemental gods are from. my character follows a faith that is not from Gransys nor Bitterblack as he and his pawn follow a goddess who often is depicted as half human/elf and half snake, hence why I wear the Immortal set (snake symbol on armor), and she has the Hydra Husk and Dowsing Spikes (serpentine weapons)
I agree. The All-Mother certainly predates what we see on the mainland but probably doesn't come before Bitterblack Island, though we have little evidence said from Ashe's own declarations. He's certainly aware of the true nature of the cycle and the Seneschal and such, but we have little idea of what the dominant religions of his world were like. They may or may not have included the All-Mother, or elements, or the Maker.
It's an interesting subject to think on, but there's little in the way of answers to be found.

I definitely want to do a lore script on him. There isn't much given to us directly but there's a lot more to be found than for, say, the Emerald King.

Well considering what is implied by its name it's safe to assume that the Ur-dragon is the very earliest if not the very original dragon of the cycle perhaps it even started the cycle

@@Draezeth They are Arisen who died before facing their Seneschal, whether or not they beat their dragon. Since wyrmkin can be found in the Everfall there must have been a fair number who died after beating their dragons.

No, I just pieced together all that I could about them based on evidence found in-game. It was admittedly a bit of a personal passion project but I stand by the work.

how do you get ddda to look like yours? i use the 4k texture and wickfutenb v4 but it doesnt look quite as yours. also been a while since you made a graphic vid :P
Hehe, yeah been a while true. Well I actually found a way to play in 4K and still get 60 fps, might make a video tutorial on how to make that work. Also some post color editing makes it look crispier.

I think it's because I play in 4K now, and some post processing enhance the visuals as well.

Bitterblack Island was created in a pocket dimension to house Ashe/Daimon and prevent him from using his powers to unmake reality. It's set in a different space from the other worlds, but is linked enough to share the same passage of time.
It didn't exist before him, and so much of it was created as a sort of cruel reminder of his past and his own inadequacies.
Including all those broken rift stones, forever preventing him from calling back the pawn Olra who he loved so much.
Bitterblack Island really deserves its own video...I may do that sometime in the near future...
