As a person whose name everyone gets wrong, when I make calls to customer service or other people who have to spend all day on the phone with strangers, I play a little game show in my head where I win a prize if I guess the spelling of their name correctly on the first try. They usually laugh about the game show part. Sometimes they're amazed that I guess right. It helps to work for many years in a school. Lots of exposure to new names and spellings.

Sorta way but in a "it's spelt j-a-d-e-n so could ya fix dat? Please and thank you!" Sorta way.
I totally I understand where you’re coming from. My name is Lorelai and I’m just learned to say here! whenever teachers pause when taking attendance. Most subs don’t even try to pronounce it they just start spelling it out, like what!
I feel your pain. My name is Tsifira, and almost nobody I meet can pronounce it, much less spell it. Heck, my little sister knew how to spell my name before she knew the alphabet because I had to explain it so often.
I’ve only ever seen my deadname (spelled the way I do) on a touristy souvenir once. It was at a little woven bracelet stand (somewhere in the Caribbean; maybe Cozumel in Mexico I can’t remember) and they were all handmade. I was so shocked that I bought it.
I had a teacher who as a joke said “if I can’t remember your name. I will just call you Bob for convenience” but the second name on the register was a person who was actually called Bob. My teacher jumped out of his chair and shouted “you guys actually have a Bob” and it was a practical class so Bob became his number 2 and was the person he picked to help demonstrate things

Oh my god. That drivers Ed teacher. That short scene had me fuming. You can’t just discard someone’s name like that and call them something else and expect them to take you seriously/acknowledge it... dang
I know, in one of my classes there were two kids named Kaiden and Kayden, normally they'd move on to their last initial so it would be first name and then the initial of their last name but both of they're last names started with a P, but at least that teacher found a way to identify them by using their middle initials (That or she called one Kaiden 1 and the other Kayden 2, I don't remember) and she didn't rename one of them to Derek or something!
Omg there’s so many ways to spell Sofia/safiya. My sister is Sofia, but there’s also Sophia. AND OMG DONT GET ME STARTED ON THE DIFFRENT SPELLINGS OF MY NAME!
I LOVE white baby name memes. Bayleigh, Makaylah, Brexton ... my sister had an entire list of these names when she was pregnant. Thankfully she went with a random town in England instead (Sutton).
this honestly reminds me of something in primary. We had a kid from Indian heritage (never asked if he moved here or was born here, didn't matter to me, he was a cool friend) whom we had a ritual whenever a sub read out his name, which was always to yell, as a class, the correct pronunciation. It had two r's pronounced as d's, never looked up if it was a traditional name or anything. He was just the friend we all knew strangers would misname and as a class, we would not put up with it.
We had a finnish kid in class named James, and of course all new substitute teachers said it like most people would like ‘’Jayms’’. But his name is not said that way since he is finnish, and many of the kids in our class would find it funny when the sub teacher read out his name in english and we would kinda rip the teacher off and then tell them the correct way lol so James didn’t have to do it himself every time. It’s supposed to be said like Yamés. but i get that it’s confusing for a random stranger or teacher who might only have heard it said like James Bond’s name is
When a whole class comes together for the kid who is a different ethnicity/culture/background and kinda laughs at the teacher rather than at the student I just find it wholesome lol We were lucky to have a good school environment where everyone was quite unproblematic and kind to the ‘’different’’ kids. I have later realized so many schools are not like this and love bullying the ones that stand out The yelling in unison also happened a few times for us when telling the teacher the pronounciation of James’ name
@@helixxia9320it's good to have reminders its' not all bullying. NZ is pretty multicultural, though I have noticed most of those from China adopt a "european" name, which is kind of sad to me. For extra fun when I worked on a multinational phone line I had occasion to try to pronounce last names, and would always apologise, make my attempt, then ask how close I was, which I think people appreciated as I had a lot of success
I have this weird story with my name, which is Viera, which is pretty popular name.. of people in their 70s rn in my country.. And even though it is not really used among my peers, they still know how to pronounce it.. buuut.. Theres this teacher.. he taught me physics in my freshmann year of highschool.. and this guy.. for some reason always pronounced me as Vera (the english version).. which like.. i dont mind.. but dude really couldnt get the hint.. because noone else called me Vera.. And my parents one day returned home from a parent-teacher thing and my mom asks me: "Vierka, why is your physics teacher calling you Vera?" and "Me and dad tried tp correct him multiple times but for some reason he wouldn't take the hint." ..to this day.. he never learned my name correctly.. I totally I understand where you’re coming from. My name is Lorelai and I’m just learned to say here! whenever teachers pause when taking attendance. Most subs don’t even try to pronounce it they just start spelling it out, like what!

I also know a Lorelai and people always pronounce it Lorelei and everyone gets so triggered
Lorelai is actually a really pretty name, I haven’t heard of it before

Just curious, how would you pronounce your name? I’ve never seen that name before!
Pretty much exactly how it’s spelled. The “Ts” is like the middle sound in the word “pretzel.” It’s easier to explain verbally.

That happened to someone in my class once , and I felt bad for them😔
I know, in one of my classes there were two kids named Kaiden and Kayden, normally they'd move on to their last initial so it would be first name and then the initial of their last name but both of they're last names started with a P, but at least that teacher found a way to identify them by using their middle initials (That or she called one Kaiden 1 and the other Kayden 2, I don't remember) and she didn't rename one of them to Derek or something!
My name is Iris. People often pronounce it E-ris instead of I-ris. Which you can say, but it is kinda incorrect.

this honestly reminds me of something in primary. He was just the friend we all knew strangers would misname and as a class, we would not put up with it.
cool
We had a finnish kid in class named James, and of course all new substitute teachers said it like most people would like ‘’Jayms’’. But his name is not said that way since he is finnish, and many of the kids in our class would find it funny when the sub teacher read out his name in english and we would kinda rip the teacher off and then tell them the correct way lol so James didn’t have to do it himself every time. It’s supposed to be said like Yamés. but i get that it’s confusing for a random stranger or teacher who might only have heard it said like James Bond’s name is
When a whole class comes together for the kid who is a different ethnicity/culture/background and kinda laughs at the teacher rather than at the student I just find it wholesome lol
We were lucky to have a good school environment where everyone was quite unproblematic and kind to the ‘’different’’ kids. I have later realized so many schools are not like this and love bullying the ones that stand out
The yelling in unison also happened a few times for us when telling the teacher the pronounciation of James’ name

And my parents one day returned home from a parent-teacher thing and my mom asks me: "Vierka, why is your physics teacher calling you Vera?" and "Me and dad tried tp correct him multiple times but for some reason he wouldn't take the hint."
..to this day.. he never learned my name correctly..
I mean not that I mind.. but I just find it hilarious 😅
