    Hi ,Dr. Aloe ! I did the same things as you do. I cut the whole big ball of roots out of my aloe, and put the plant back to the pot mixed with some new soil. That was 2 weeks ago, now I have made 9 pots total including mother and babies, and 3 extra pots from the chopped roots. Surprise ! They are all growing ! 👏👏👏👏👏

    My aloe plant is an indoor plant and is about 30 years old. Recently, the mother plant, flopped over the side of the pot. I am in Virginia, in January, so I hadn't intended to take out all the pups until Spring. Do you think I can stake the mother back upright or repot even though it's not the ideal time?

    Hello! so I live in a cold climate and my aloe is in a pot. there were about 5-6 pups growing and causing the plant to fall over, finally what happened was that the mother plants stem broke off completely from its roots :( much shorter than where you cut your aloe. I removed some of the lower leaves and repotted it. Since it is an indoor plant what other care should I be providing? Thanks so much

      We agree that the plant is the best place to get it from. The next best thing is fresh aloe that has not been processed - only preserved by freezing. That is what we do for those that don't filet their own.

    Having just attained my first aloe, Ive watched many aloe videos on pup harvest and transplanting and I've noticed one thing in particular that makes the harvesting seem counter intuitive. Aloe has an extremely small root ball for the size of the plant it supports. This makes it very easy to be knocked over or up rooted in some fashion. But this plant you have removed on the video took more effort than any of the other 5 year old aloe's ive seen. It also had the most pups by far. Its obvious that producing more shoots is this plants way of stabilizing its foundation for growth. In this sense, I dont find it reasonable to harvest and destabilize the parent plant for the pups when they are already growing fine. I could understand it if the shoots choked out the parent plant, but with all the uncared for aloe Ive seen around, I dont see parent plants suffering. If there is more info you can share, I would be interested.

    • @Aloe1
      @Aloe1  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Hvens Fury the leaves get much thicker and the mother plant much bigger when you take the pups away. Also, when you cut the roots off, it seems to grow better new roots and a healthier plant. But, left alone, aloe will take over, cover the ground and just keep spreading.

I would love to save those stems from her some how , please let me know, thank you . Dawn

      You can bury it outside or in a pot - as long as it doesn't freeze, they will grow. You can orient is the same was as it was in the dirt and at about the same depth. The babies that grow from scratch this way without the mother in the way grow nice and pretty.

I chopped off the bad and damaged root and trimmed all the dead leave with some of the damaged ones too. I trimmed the root and on a few i cut roots down to 6". and exposure some of the sides of the root stock think they might re-root from there. then i too the leaves and sliced them rubbing them aloe all over the roots. I had not clue if this was right way to help them before replanting or if I just killed them all. What do you think did i kill them or am i doing something right?

    • @MichaelHaley

      They can sure look beat up after being separated from their mothers... but after transplanting, they usually spring back to like in a couple months and grow beautifully. But you do want to make sure you have a good species. Barbadensis Miller is the best with Stockton being the best known variety.

      They don't like change... they don't like to have things added to the soil... don't like being transplanted, etc. They often go through a brown state... for a month or more, as a response to changes.
