The reason for all the extra characters and zero plot development is it was originally supposed to be a TV show. So they cut a lot so they could have a November movie release. Disney had a chance to actually make money and restore some of their reputation. Instead they rushed this out and added another failure to their arsenal.
Came to say this exact thing. On the ride home, we could not name a single new character or even pull the name of the main villain out of the sky. It all felt WAY to rushed. This one was definitely forced into sequel-itis by the company. Even if Vancouver had handed the project back over to the normal Disney Movie Production Group, I don't know if they could've fixed it.
She has a full on adventure that includes travelling through the realm of the gods to find the island, and 60 seconds after they find the island, about a half dozen other explorers from (presumably farflung) other islands immediately find it as well.
