A little tip for new tiers when you tie a fly like this and have that little clipping from the wrapped hackle drop them into a small pill jar or matchbox, and when tying from scratch use them to dress tails, or as wing material on smaller ties etc. Not only does it help stretch materials, and help clean up, can lend inspiration to a freestyle tie.

i imagine this could be simplified some by skipping the hackle entirely in favour of a dubbing loop full of hares ear dubbing or something similarly buggy, then brushing it straight down with a toothbrush so that you don't have to wrestle the stiff hackle fibers
