I remember watching this back in 2006 as a middle-schooler obsessed with star wars. A relic of a different era, this work of art - before clout, ad revenue, and social media - is a beautiful expression of genuine creativity and passion of the highest order.
As someone who only recently rediscovered this, I remember watching this in the early 2000s, this literally brought me to tears. It’s been so long and feels a lifetime ago. 😭
I remember watching this for the first time back in 2007. The music and fight choreography bring back memories of the nerdy duels i used to do as a kid after watching this.
Nathaniel Jernigan I like the way you think. I only leave my comment open ended because I'm sure there may be sicker duels that may have happened/ are yet to come... Or do you know this and just plainly disagree?
Nathaniel Jernigan I just want to note though, I only leave my comment open ended because I'm sure there may be sicker duels that may have happened/ are yet to come... Or do you know this and just plainly disagree?
LegendByGod No, you've got me all wrong. I love this duel. In my opinion it trumps even the movie duels. Sure you could argue the digital effects are lacking, but these guys don't really need them. 20x Better than Maul's cheesy demise, and don't get me started on the Dooku vs Anakin duel in "Attack of the Clones". In my opinion Lucas should have just got these guys for the film fights. I don't doubt there are other great duels on youtube, but what I really find "sick" is the physical talent and ability these two are packing. Sure CGI can look cool, but it doesn't beat the real deal.
Nathaniel Jernigan So very true, I believe at least. You seem like you know a good thing when you see it- I feel like you and I, plus these guys, could make a sweet video. Where are they from anyhow, you know?
To this day this is my favorite duel of light sabers. Whether it's in the movies or not. The movies, while having obviously higher production values, always look like a dance - highly choreographed. This is also very dance-esque, but conveys more of a look of highly skilled warriors that just happen to be dancing due to their near-even match. Also the music and the letter bring it even higher, far above the sillier but similar fights on youtube. I wish it was more popular. 400k after 10 years is a decent amount but not enough imo.
I'm SO GLAD I found this online on TH-cam, since the original copy I downloaded ages ago is on a failed hard drive. And I was just reminded of this epic piece of lightsaber battle movie history. Thanks for preserving this artwork for all to view here.
So I was researching lightsaber colors because I'm a nerd. Red lightsabers are made using synthetic crystals that focus the beam, because Sith can only get these crystals artificially. Natural ones come in different colors. Purple lightsabers belong to Jedi who tread close to the dark side and are aggressive and decisive. So the way I like to view this story, the author of the letter was a Sith who was a good person and had a family, but believed in Sith philosophy and that the Jedi were corrupt and obsolete. The guy with the two-sided sword was a Jedi assassin who specialized in fighting Sith and was sent to track him and take him down, because Jedi with purple lightsabers are less afraid to get their hands dirty.
OriginMSD Talk about necro bump, but to add weight to your theory, the Jedi were discouraged from having lovers(attachments and passions). Definitely seems like a short tale in the life of a Sith devoted to his passions.
Not all sith kyber crystals are red by synthetics. If you are extremely powerful you can force a kyber crystal to turn red. Vader poured all his pain, anger and rage into a kyber crystal bending the force to his will and forcing the Krystal to feel pain, in essence it bled and turned red. To my knowledge only sidious and Vader have bled their crystals. The process is dangerous enough to kill you, which is why I believe no others have successfully done it or attempted to do it as you literally need to bend the force to your will
Purple lightsabers only exist because Samuel L. Jackson insisted on it. George Lucas only wanted three colors: Blue for apprentices, Green for masters, and Red for villains. At a certain point that rule was thrown out of course
Great Star Wars Fan film love how they use Black Hawk down theme it fits really well, star wars saber Master brought me back here star wars refresh January 17 2024.
Cary, Calvin and Clarence: I'm not sure if you even check this or receive notifications anymore. Just in case you do, I'd like to point out the entries below my own. It's now July of 2018. Many years have passed. Many new installments to Star Wars have come along. A whole new generation is now enjoying the films that inspired your work. And yet, here I am again, along with others, to tell you in no uncertain terms that, in some ways, nothing has changed. Even with a lower video resolution than is produced by some cell phones today. Even with wonderful fan creations like academies that teach light sabre combat and dueling. Even with all the advancements so many of us, as both viewers and producers of such, enjoy today. Despite all of the changes and advancements so many of us have experienced, and the passage of the years, this work of your still stands preeminent. IMHO this is, hands down, the best fan fiction light sabre duel l have ever seen. Period. The warrior's story based on a letter with it's spiritual elements, the selection of musical accompaniment to your piece, and the extraordinary talent the Ho brothers have shown us in this piece is still unmatched to this day. Gentlemen, you have made the unexpected and spectacular real for us all, and I thank you once again for this sharing of your vision and talents. I only hope, with all my heart, that the world at large has in some way repaid you for this gift that you've given to us all. May the force be with you.....always.
Mid 2019 & it crept back into my head to find this & watch again. Only other one that comes close is when they used portals to change the way they fall with no gravity.
So I remember watching this duel years back, I thought it was lost to time, but I once again have found it, one of the most amazing lightsaber duels I have ever watched, the quality is nostalgic too, didn't really notice it used Jedi Knight sounds until now, hello again, old friend. :)
Re-discovered this classic saber duel after 12 years. Still the best fan made ever. Love the simple back story but yet filled with deep emotional meaning.
Agreed! Nothing in fan films or even the Lucas series matches in terms of choreography and emotionality, for sure. "Luke, I am your father" was emotional, but this is next level.
I first found this video many years ago, and it is still my favourite lightsaber duel. The music and the tiny bit of story, mixed with the awesome choreography is what makes this video great in my opinion.
i cant express how much i love this. i remember seeing this when the brothers put it up on youtube. i love every aspect of this film from the monologue throught the entire fight.
This video still gives me the goosebumps to this day. Even though it is likely nearly 14 years old now (I believe the original was released in 2002) It has surly stood the test of time.
Whatever happened to these guys? Specifically Calvin (the guy with the 2 lightsabers)? Because this is absolutely amazing. Not only is the martial arts/fight choreography brilliant, but so is the cinematography and camera-work. There are so many camera-cuts, but the transitions between the angles still flow seamlessly. Wide shots like at 3:27 add a distinct kung-fu style to it. If he made this in his spare time as a youth, I'd love to see what Calvin could do directing an entire martial arts film. I saw this back in 2002 when it came out, and I bought AlamDV2 over it. I made a bunch of specFX videos of my own, but none could ever come close to matching the greatness of this.
I know there are hundreds of lightsaber choreography videos out there, many that are of much higher quality, but for somehow this one has always stood out for me and captured a level of emotional none of the others can. I just wish it was in HD.
Absolutely wonderful.. The Ho Brothers deserve all kind of praises!! Everything in this movie is right: from the song selection to the skill of both actors.. Just beautiful from start to finish.
This duel stands the test of time. Still one of the best made. I have to note how much harder it was to produce a film like this 10 years ago. I hope the creators are proud of their magnificent work! May the Force be with you!
Please...do not leave this video to time, it will only be lost. I beg you, upload this again, as there are fans willing to upgrade the resolution so the story can be remembered! Stories like these need to be remembered, especially when the world is in such chaos over so many small and large things!
Still the best energy and precision in a fan made lightsaber dual. Its over-choreographed in a few parts but the Ho brothers are masters in their own right even way back then. I remember watching this for the first time in 2008. That was back when TH-cam was the shit.
Damn I haven't heard seen this video in at least 8 years. When I heard this song in South Park just now, without missing a beat I instantly remembered this is where I heard it.
I like to watch this when im having a bad day, or just got done arguing with someone...just something about how majestic this film is, puts me at peace with myself...this will Never get old and to be honest im glad they didnt do anything else. perfect in everyway as it is.
Dang, I saw this at least 8 years ago and I can't believe how great this video has aged! Probably the best lightsaber fight ever choreographed. It's the music combined with the almost frantic jabs from the duelists that run a chill down my spine every time! What I like most about the fight is that it actually looks like they're trying to hit each other and not just trying to hit the other lightsaber. A+++++ P.S. We NEED a HD video of this because a lot of people need to see this!
there are no phrases or positive words that could truly ever express the how good this video is. the music, the letter, the setting, the style and of coarse the the 2 brothers great work involved in this piece. one of the greatest star wars saber duels out there if not the greatest. 2 thumbs up! if i had more thumbs i'd put those up too.
This video is my favorite of all of the many, many lightsaber duel/fights. After watching this and other such duels on youtube. This one, in my opinion, is still be far the best. Because it tells you a story. It has an epic battle. And a tragic ending, but leaves you wanting more. That alone is just great. Something like this does not need super special effects. The martial arts alone, displayed here are truly phenomenal. The swordsmanship is outstanding. This truly is "The Art of the Saber".
Still one of the best fan lightsaber fights, all these years later. This was one of the videos that introduced TH-cam to me. I will never hear this song elsewhere, and not immediately go watch it again!
Even though the RvD saber fights may be more complex, and use fancier effects in post-processing; they simply do not match the control and power of these two guys, obvious with their martial art training, these two fight much more like real jedi than any others I've seen outside the Star Wars movies.
among all of the fan made movies, you guys have by far blew away the competition. it was excellent in every way. can't wait to see what else you guys can do.
I've seen this video so many times, but everytime i'm in awe of not only the fight sequences, but the overall, thought provoking that message that it sends out. Truely a master piece in fan film making. The Ho Brothers are simply breath taking in their field
I first saw this years ago, and remember being in tears, like right now. I still love it, and it is still the best lightsaber fight on TH-cam. The music choices are perfect, and the monologue does a lot to enhance the emotion of the film. First rate all the way.
Such a wonderful classic! This literally STARTED the modern day fan film! The FX and such an excellent duel! It'd be amazing to see an upscale. I was around when this was brand new and I remember watching it over and over and over very pleased it is still up
Jeremy sent me. Loved it. Thank you
Yes! Same, the memory was locked away. As soon as he said "Art of the Sabre" it all came flooding back.
still to date... all these years later, the best fan made lightsaber duel I have ever seen :)
St Nicholas I came here to say exactly this.
St Nicholas agreeeed
100% Yes to that!
Amen.
One of my first, and favourite, videos I ever found on TH-cam. Still amazing.
I remember watching this back in 2006 as a middle-schooler obsessed with star wars. A relic of a different era, this work of art - before clout, ad revenue, and social media - is a beautiful expression of genuine creativity and passion of the highest order.
Elegantly put. The passion found in early TH-cam short films and fan films are still super inspirational to me.
As someone who only recently rediscovered this, I remember watching this in the early 2000s, this literally brought me to tears. It’s been so long and feels a lifetime ago. 😭
Still dope.
aye i just watched your video lol
So are you, sir!
Thought I was only one who watches this old fan film from time to time.
Bruh. You need to make a lightsaber duel video.
Edit: I'm a long time subscriber of yours.
Word.
THEY NEED TO RE-UPLOAD THIS FOR BETTER RESOLUTION, I don't want this video to be lost, plus it would be a huge hit no one knows about this!
it was probably filmed digitally years ago which means no higher quality is available :(
actually you can upscale old low res vid with a bit of work.
th-cam.com/video/6-NfebaWRjM/w-d-xo.html
They've finally done it
th-cam.com/video/6-NfebaWRjM/w-d-xo.html
Somebody upscaled it with AI to 1080p. Should be the second result when you search Art of the Saber.
2023 and this is still one of my favorite TH-cam videos!
Had never seen this, but Jeremy Jahns mentioned it in his latest video. Amazing!
Who’s here because Jeremy reminded us that this duel was 18 years ago and way better than anything on the Acolyte $180 million duels
literally me
Me right now
I remember watching this for the first time back in 2007. The music and fight choreography bring back memories of the nerdy duels i used to do as a kid after watching this.
+RapidPiqq Me too, this brings me back to when I was constantly looking up star wars fights.
Likewise!!! So long ago, yet still so darn amazing!!!
I still come back to this. This boy is the sickest lightsaber duel I still have seen on TH-cam.
More like sickest lightsaber duel, period.
Nathaniel Jernigan I like the way you think.
I only leave my comment open ended because I'm sure there may be sicker duels that may have happened/ are yet to come...
Or do you know this and just plainly disagree?

I've been watching this vid again and again sporadically over the years, I always come back to it and I always show it to people.
Just found this on my friend's old PSP. Can't believe this is 15 years old.
Star Wars + The Matrix + Gladiator = a totally wicked project!!!
@@subasurf no, the song at the very end is from Gladiator
18 years since this video came out is actually insane 🙌
I'm SO GLAD I found this online on TH-cam, since the original copy I downloaded ages ago is on a failed hard drive. And I was just reminded of this epic piece of lightsaber battle movie history. Thanks for preserving this artwork for all to view here.
9-10 years later, still one of my favorite ever videos. Just remarkably well done.
Been watching this and loving it for 10+ years!
15 years later and I still come back to watch this.

Great Star Wars Fan film love how they use Black Hawk down theme it fits really well, star wars saber Master brought me back here star wars refresh January 17 2024.

Back here in 2020
I watched this in my college after effects class in 2003 - man, so glad I found it again!
It's 2023 now and what you said still holds true.
I'm 34 now and can remember seeing this as a teenager...LOVE IT! NEED HD! always wanted the movies to get into this type of epic duel...maybe one day
So dope! How the hell did I end up 18 years late to the party??!
Saw this in the original form in college. It’s a testament to this time of the internet.

I am
Yep
Which video did he mention this ?
Who is Jeremy
I still watch this Duel, they did a great job at this all these years ago. Wonder where they are now and what they are up to these days.

out of all the light saber fights on youtube. This fight still my fav.
I remember watching this when I was like 4 or 5, this was so long ago...memories...
Ah, this is such a beautiful piece.
Kick-ass fighting!
A beautiful setup with the opening monologue...
And the way it ended.
Just beautiful!
I wonder where these guys are now. The best fight scene ever put to film...done by a couple of guys in the woods near their homes.
I have seen a lot of the saber duels on youtube and this one is still my fav, WELL DONE!!!
This is still one of the best lightsaber fights ever made, independent or otherwise.
+Aaron McCausland Now that it's a decade later, they shall make one that goes even harder
This is truly one of the best put together scenes I've ever seen
Need a remake, with the same guys, better camera and better vfx!!!
over 7 years and still the best ^^
Am I the only one that looks at old comments and wonder how that person is doing? xD
After all these years, still can't find a duel on TH-cam more movie-worthy than this.
OG man:
I've known about this song long before South Park.
Thank you Ho Brothers and your Art Of the Saber
I heard South Park play this song and went back to this video. hahaha I was actually expecting the letter being read in the episode too. lol
That would have been the clincher.
there are no phrases or positive words that could truly ever express the how good this video is. the music, the letter, the setting, the style and of coarse the the 2 brothers great work involved in this piece. one of the greatest star wars saber duels out there if not the greatest. 2 thumbs up! if i had more thumbs i'd put those up too.
The new episode of southpark brought me here season 20 episode 2
Same here. When I heard that music at the end I looked up this video.
oldie but a goodie
This video is my favorite of all of the many, many lightsaber duel/fights. After watching this and other such duels on youtube. This one, in my opinion, is still be far the best. And the composition of it with the letter and the excellent choice of music; just brings the feels in a way no ryan duel has ever matched
You still make a good point DJJ!
this is for me one of the best star wars fan films, great feeling, acting, Fx, and you get an emotional response when the hero falls well done
holy fuck this vid is 11 years old now.
among all of the fan made movies, you guys have by far blew away the competition. it was excellent in every way. can't wait to see what else you guys can do.
the most amazing thing i have ever seen in my life (next to my gf)
The best of the best. Great story line, great action. Love the music too.
Ho Brothers, if you happen to be reading this, any chance you'de do the youtube community an honor and release this in HD? :D
This was almost certainly shot before consumer HD video cameras existed. :(
I've seen this video so many times, but everytime i'm in awe of not only the fight sequences, but the overall, thought provoking that message that it sends out.
Truely a master piece in fan film making.
The Ho Brothers are simply breath taking in their field
this is from the original internet
Man. I had to come back this AMAZING MASTERPIECE! It's been way too long since I watched it last. Still holds up.
Use me as a the Acolyte sucks button.
I love this short film. Awesome Martial Arts fighting sequences was so unbelievable.
this is BY FAR the best fan made saber fight out there...I am glad I found it again
Definately the best edited, and choreographed fan film I have ever seen!!
Excellent all around job!! Keep up the great work!
I was around when this was brand new and I remember watching it over and over and over very pleased it is still up
How does this still only have 505,000 views??????
Anything less than 5 million views is shocking.

out of all the saber fights i have ever seen this one has to be the best one i have ever seen! great job and keep it up it was great and moving.
So ecstatic that I found this again. I remember watching this so many years ago. Still one of my favorite fan-made lightsaber battles of all time.
