EXO debut in 2012 while BTS did in 2013. I'm a massive fan of both groups and it's really upsetting to see members of each fandom rip the other apart. EXO and BTS are good friends and respect each other greatly. Both groups are super talented and have their own charms and styles.

I seriously do not understand fan wars. I've been listening to kpop since 2010/2011, and have so many favorite groups. Started out with TVXQ, Bigbang, Shinhwa, 2nE1, f(x), Super Junior, BAP, etc. When EXO, BTS, NCT and other new groups came along, my friends and I became fans of them, too. Just enjoy the music, everyone. Just be a fan of kpop. Stan your favs, but let others have theirs too.

Unlike Super Junior who had multiple subunits (project based), EXO-K and EXO-M were permanent until the China line left. They always released Korean and Mandarin version for every comeback/title track so their popularity was insane even in China. MAMA was their official debut and What Is Love was their pre-debut MV. So, to answer your question - Yes, EXO was already very famous from the start.

I've read the comments and I'm actually surprised no one mentioned how at 2:09 EXO makes an X in their choreography which is dope as hell, with how they even transitioned into it. Definitely underrated choreo and group for that matter.

Bri Brantley it's bc of some really disgusting shit a large number of exols have pulled on Army since BTS debuted (trending plagiarism boys, pitting other fandoms against them by faking tweets - the bbma stuff- Tae' grandma, the Melon awards stuff last year...etc) Not that Army are angels, every fandom has immature fans, but exols have done some sick stuff, went toi far, and ppl are no apologizing for that. Army have beef with them bc of that so the thing just keeps on going.
There's also the fact that korean fans tend to be more "monogamous" let's say. As in, they tend to stan one group only and be loyal only to that, which causes rivalries.
That thing about stanning just one group unlike international fans is um kinda true.

That's why u need to look at objective data. I was on the fringes of kpop for years and exols were famous for their overboard toxicity before I even began stanning BTS, which is back in May only.
It's not a matter of opinion, here (and we DO call out our own when we see them sending death threats, mind you.)
I did not deny the existence of black sheep in our fandom . There are fucked up ppl in every fandom, and with bigger fandoms comes more people BUT some things are objective and objectively There's a reason why netizens have voted exols as worst fandom.
Here's only a few facts for you where Army vs Exols are concerned:
- some stans sent death threats to other stans: happened in BOTH fandoms
BUT
- trended a hashtag accusing a group of plagiarizing: exols to BTS only
- organized en masse in an attempt to sabotage a group's comeback: exols to BTS only
- made holocaust jokes, sharing gas chamber images and even making edits and calling the group nazi: exols to BTS only
- Black ocean at an award show: exols to BTS only
- harassed Melon employees and made petitions to take a daesang, which was called charity, from the group that received it: exols to BTS only
- called the freaking white house for the same above reason: exols to BTS only
- made fun of the death of a member's grandma and a fan's death: exols to BTS and Army only
- crashed the government site making petitions against MAMA, bc apparently it did charity again, and ended on the news for it: exols to BTS and MAMA only (when we had a problem with the iffy shit Mnet did, we tried trending hashtags asking for a clear explanation. Hashtags which were blocked, but what I want u to notice is the difference in attitude and ways to behave overall as a fandom)
(we crashed a site today bc we were all downloading the free BTS song that had been just released lmao. )
- accusations of the agency having mass bought albums in order to falsely increase the number of sells: exols to Bighit/BTS only
- Folowing that, the stalking of fans in shops to see if they really bought albums of the group they said they stan: exols to Army only
- verbally and sometimes even physically harassed fans at award show: exols to army last year bc BTS won daesang, this year to some army and wannables\Wanna One, but in this case tried to pin the fault on army once again, because god forbid taking resposability for once. Fortunately nobody outside your fandom fell for that bs
- made up a tweet supposedly quoting fans of a group and proceeded to mock the fandom and get the other fandoms against it for that message even though ppl proved that it was all false: exols to Army only
Do I *really* need to go on with this. These are things that sets us apart as fandoms and which makes the beef understandable. Mind you, most of us have nothing against EXO or peaceful exols, but as a fandom you guys need to realize the magnitude of the stuff your FANDOM did EN MASSE (as in, not just a few assholes, bc it takes a lot of fans to trend, to crash, to make the news and so on), own up to it and collect your own trash.
There's a VAST difference between what our fandom has done through the years (which we don't justify and we do condemn) and what yours has done (and this only regarding BTS&Army alone). We take care of our black sheep, we are aware if them and don't defend them. When we see them starting shit (and sometimes even when they reply to exols starting shit even though getting pissed at some of the stuff said is understandable. We have no problem with those who defend, but we call out when some of them defend by displaying wrong behaviors) we try to stop them.
Of course, both the fandoms are both big and some things may slide by BUT objectively speaking, not even the most rotten of ours ever got to the lenghts yours did and those are not opinions, but FACTS.
I am being objective when I say that both fandoms are to be blamed. exo-ls have bad reputation because exo were really famous from 2013 until now and everyone hated on exo because of that. it's the same thing that's happening with armys right now that bts is becoming really popular. If you want to look at facts then you should know by now that many fandoms "hate" armys just like exo-ls...it seems to me that you are biased and you don't want to stop the fanwars. you just want to blame exo-ls to make armys seem better. If we only blame one side then the fanwars will never stop. If I had time I could write a big list just like you with things that armys have done to exo but it's not going to change anything. it's not a competition about which fandom is less toxic lol...
EXO and BTS, both are great, both have extremely great friendships among members.. let's not even talk about petty "fans" sweating over fanwars..let's just enjoy great music :)

I love both groups and the fandoms can be really fanatical! It’s unsettling at times. I hype both groups. I found EXO through Chanyeol’s OST song in the kdrama “Goblin the Great and Lonely God”. Then once I starting watching all their MV’s and Comeback stages on TH-cam I noticed BTS and it was a wrap. They are my top two favs! They both tie for #1. I said what I said!😂😂

I still remember the first day I watched this MV, I went nuts......and I'm not an exo-l. Exo have really done well for themselves and the kpop industry. We have to give due respect to them for that. Especially after all they've been through. They keep getting better every year. Besides Bigbang, Winner and Ikon, Exo is that one non-YG group that their talent, creativity and music style has caught my attention and kept me loyal to them particularly their vocal and dance skills.

They're equally fantastic. EXO has poppier, soulful sound with a bit of hip hop. They just recently started introducing more hip hop into their music. BTS started off with hip hop, they have more of a LA feeling because of their show and inspiration. They had a bit of a rock/hip hop feeling. They've just been getting into more pop but their old style has been resurfacing. However, they are both the top boy groups right now and that's a fact but they're totally different, people just need to respect that.

I first got acquainted with K*pop a year ago... I think the difference between K*pop and other music is in the dance. K*pop is famous for its dances. When I got to know K*pop, I first watched the music video and K*pop dance is attractive to me. And the next step was to look at the meaning of that song and if the meaning and dance of that music was good, I would listen to that music... until I met E*xo. For me, E*xo is music without subtitles, which means I don't need to know the meaning. I don't have their lyrics, I just enjoy listening to their beautiful voice and wonderful music. Whenever I want to see K*pop or listen to it, I listen to other groups' music or watch other groups' music videos. But whenever I want to listen to really good music, I only listen to E*XO.
E*XO has everything I like and expect from a very good music. E*XO dances very well and skillfully. E*XO has meaningful and beautiful music. E*XO has the best and most important characteristic of a singer group, which is the ability to sing. E*XO has the 8 best singers in K*orea. The 8 best vocalists in the history of K*pop. 8 vocalists and rappers. That means all the members can rap in addition to vocals. The power of the notes and the magical voice of E*XO members is not in any group. When they start singing, I am with myself. I say, are they really normal people? How can they sing so well and powerfully? It's as if they are extraterrestrial with a voice that comes from heaven.
E*XO can perform live music in such a way that you scream with excitement and surprise. They sing so strong and well that recently they protested to them not to perform live music so much and not to show off your good voice. In addition to singing, they are actors. They are also very good. In fact, E*XO are the most talented and best singers, actors, dancers, and models in the K*pop and K*drama industry... I admire many groups besides EXO and I like their music, such as Stray Kids, Ateez, seventeen, TXT, TNX, NCT, Black Pink, TWICE, Girls Generation, BTS, and... but E*XO is an unrepeatable legend in the K*pop music industry.
