The first pan-India movie was "Mahishasura Mardini" released in 1959. Starring Dr. Rajkumar in the lead role and directed by B.S Ranga, it was originally released in Kannada and subsequently dubbed into seven other languages, including Hindi (titled Durga Maata ) and Telugu. For decades after Mahishasura Mardini, no other Indian film was dubbed into more than three languages.
With all due respect to raajkumar sir the first movie i believe went pan India was in 1948 a movie named chandralekha directed by S.S.Vasan which become successful in North indian markets thus opening the doors for South Indian movies to be marketed in the Hindi belt.
Kamal Haasan Sir was the first actor and Cinema Professional in Indian Cinema who, way back in 1989, made a movie titlee Aboorva Sagothargal, and same released in Hindi titled Appu Raja .. That movie was a blockbuster all over India when no other actor had such success.. Even Sholay didn't release in Tamil Nadu and many other states and hence wasn't a nationwide success in the literal sense.. Kamal Haasan Sir again gave a Nationwide blockbuster movie in 1996 with Indian movie i.e. Hindustani .. People dont give Kamal Haasan Sir the due and appreciation that he deserves!!!
I regret to express that your understanding of South Indian cinema appears to be somewhat lacking. It is my belief that merely generating substantial revenue does not qualify a film as a pan-Indian production. The essence of true cinema lies in its content.

Man the Bollywood movies you listed, I believe many in TN wouldn't even have heard or, watched it, despite them being good films. In order for a movie to reach everyone in a culturally diverse country like India, the script has to have that kind of content. If one starts to make movies for the sake of being "Pan-Indian" you'd simply dump money down the drain if it doesn't click.
Don’t u dare say Telugu started pan India. Tamil was way ahead before baahubali with movies like roja, Indian and enthiran . This whole pan india concept is ruining cinema because now all they care about is box office. At least Tamil and Malayalam cinema are making movies like aavessham, Manjumel boys, maharaja and meiyazhagan that received nation wide acclaim without investing too much money and having chapri films

I am a Malayali and let me explain, Tamil movies grossing 500,600 crores or grossing huge numbers do so without the support of Hindi box office. Telugu has that Hindi box office support. I am definitely not saying its something bad. If you look at the recent hit Amaran, which as of now collected more than 320cr, 150cr+ is from Tamil Nadu. Also Tamil movies, Tamil stars have markets in all of South India, which Telugu doesn't have, of course big pan India movies have but regular movies don't. If Tamil movies get the hindi box office support,1000cr will be easy for them. Without Hindi box office 1000cr+ collection is impossible.
If Telugu films have Hindi audience why are u upset about it? Don't Tamil films have mallu audience? Aside from Jailer no other Tamil film has earn 40/50 cr from other South states. So what market r u referring to 😂😂
@prashch5223 wtf I am not upset or anything. Bro I just said a fact. Moreover its an achievement by Telugu industry, at least for the pan Indian movies.Tamil movies were popular in Kerala since a long time(maybe since 70s). What I meant was, for a movie to gross 1000cr it needs markets from all across India, which includes the biggest market - Hindi belt, where Telugu pan Indian movies have market. And if Tamil movies, which gross 300,400,500 crore without much the support from the Hindi belt, get some market there they will make huge numbers.
The market I was referring to was - Tamil movies are popular across South India. For example in Kerala, Telugu movies other than big pan Indian movies(and Allu Arjun sir's and Nani's movies) are not popular, same with Kannada, but with Tamil even regular movies are popular and discussed, like Lubber Pandhu, Meiyazhagan,Star etc. Maybe these films might not have collected much money from Kerala still it was discussed. Its not even something special or happening for the first time. I think its the same in other states. With popular I mean, popular among general audience. I mean of course there cinephiles, like me, who watch movies from other languages with subtitles. Personally, I have been watching Telugu movies with subtitles since maybe 2021,lockdown ott era. But since last few months the number of Telugu movies I have been watching has increased. I have watched the Mathu Vadalara movies(really loved it), Gaami,Aarambham,... I am looking forward to watch more Telugu movies and also Kannada (also from industries like Bengali and Marathi).
