Gigli is far superior here than on the Serafin rec. I think he got lazy in studio. Love the dramatic tempi. De Sabata is a legend. Wish there was more available.
His recordings in 1940 were some of his best. I think this version is better than the one recorded a year previously with Pinza under Serafin. His Di quella pira recorded in 1940 was also superb.
Gigli sounds terrific - no surprise to his many fans but one forgets. It's nice to be reminded. Pasero has never been my favorite because he always sang with that shake (caprina?). But here it's less objectionable but still noticeable. One thing I found surprising was how many extra breathes the men took. Maybe that was a style?

I slowed the rec. down. Pesaro's vibrato is fast, but not a caprino.
De Sabata ! is always Better than Serafin!
