I have these same fixtures in my 1912 house. They were all painted over. When the paint was removed this striped pattern was beneath. I chose not to keep it, but it was original.

Well sir, I finally found your channel again, it has been awhile since I’ve watched your channel, you were not popping up on my notifications, but I found you and what an excellent job you did on this project, that latch and lock looked as if someone was trying to do a crowbar break in on the door, thanks for the video sir, enjoyed it.
Haha these weren't treated the best in the past, but it makes for a fun challenge! Oh yeah that's totally understandable, it's a pretty funky finish and admittedly I really didn't like it whatsoever when I first came across it, but it grew on me over time. hope you finish redoing that old house you apparently bought soon and start doing a wider range of projects again. can only watch so many lock and door knob vids.
Haha yeah there are better options for blackening items like this, and while the chemical I used is the fastest at blackening, the quality of it is really bad compared to others - This leads to much sharper edges since in many areas the blackening flakes off around where it's being polished instead of having a soft blended edge. If I do this finish again I definitely plan on trying out other options! Thanks a lot for watching!

Antiquing an antique that may have previously antiqued...who would have thought? We see old things today thinking "Wow, time sure makes a difference on how something looks! You can see the age in this item!" I hadn't really considered that in the late 1800s early 1900s they were looking for the antique look too!

Splendid work restoring the antique lockset, knobs, and all. I bet it took a good deal of skill getting those dents and dings out of those knob plates where the door knobs go. Great work.

Fantastic. I really like the look, and wish that those old oval handles would make a comeback. Thank you for sharing! The door at the end made me think of visiting my grandmother’s apartment when I was a kid. She had one oval handle like that. Of course, the opposite side was glass with a flower in it, I think the handle broke and the building super just popped on whatever fit. Anyway, awesome!

My grandparents called that mottled finish "tortoise shell" - which I think was something of a fashion fad until it was overtaken by Bakelite and Celluloid.

Looks like it was a fairly easy resto,I do like the design and the style you chose to finish them in.but,remember always a but ,the face plate’s,that’s what I call them.I really liked the way they looked at the very beginning if you could of made it look like leather look ,I think that would have been great.of course my opinion.beautiful work as always.keep doing what your doing 👍👍👍😎😎😎
Yeah it was luckily a pretty straightforward restoration this time 'round! Haha I actually thought about how it'd make sense to use the original patina and polish in the design but I knew with how much these needed to be unbent I wouldn't be able to keep the original color. I make the lacquer myself, but there are many well rated options you can buy online such as "Mohawk Lacquer for Brass." Brilliant, so interesting to see this finish restored and how it is done. What would you have to do to make that antique copper though.. the finish you ended up with looked more like brass. Is it just a case of them being cooper plated and then the patina fluid being applied etc?
Also, on the hinges you showed - what sort of finish would you say the unblackened bit is? I have some 1920s door plates exactly the same but the exposed metal part is more orangy than copper - could it be that they’ve applied tinted lacquer? Or it has been bronze plated? Thanks again :)
Thanks a lot! The antique copper variant was sometimes copper plated and other times was bronze plated to imitate an aged copper once polished. The process for copper plated/bronze plated pieces would be identical to this set, as most blackening chemicals I've come across will work with brass, bronze and copper.
With the hinges I showed there's a bit of a difference in color in the video versus in person - These are definitely copper plated, but bronze plated "old copper" finishes were very common. It's hard to say without seeing them in person, but it's entirely possible that whatever they used for the lacquer on your hardware yellowed over time which would cause a bit of an off color. If it isn't a yellowed lacquer and it doesn't really look like copper then I'd say that they are bronze plated since brass plated "old" finishes are very yellow in color. Thanks a lot for watching!

Thank you, Collin! Good question - The red and green wheels you saw were abrasive buffs. The red one is 320 grit and the green one is 180 grit. Despite their name and grits, they don't remove enough material to be useful for sanding (as in a shallow scratch would take 20 minutes to remove with ones of these holding it in one spot) so I simply use them for cleaning objects, which they're great for haha. Hey Tim, I appreciate it! It's definitely a bit of a funky finish but I couldn't resist recreating it haha. It is indeed - I restored the door while I was at it since someone had given it the ol' 20 coats of white paint treatment in the past and it was looking pretty shabby haha. @@Tim-57 Sorry for the late reply, Tim, but I used a Klean-Strip Aircraft Paint Remover for stripping the paint off the door. I lost about four weekends just paint stripping the door since there was a lot of stubborn paint in the corners - Long story short, it was a lot more work than expected haha. Thanks! It was an interesting video. I couldn't believe how many dents and cuts this lock had. It must had been removed from a door by a gorilla. I'll be honest, not sure I like the finish. Kinda strange. I know you showed all of the manufacturers did it. It's the first time I ever saw it. Still, another fun video to watch. I hope your doing ok. No fun little wisecracks from you this time.
Hahaha right, this lock clearly met the wrong person some time in the past! Totally understandable, it's a pretty funky looking finish, especially when compared to what's offered these days. I really didn't like this style at first, but after a year or so it grew on me for some reason haha. I've been pretty busy the last couple months and had to rush a bit to get this one done, so definitely less commentary than usual with this video, but I'm doing alright - I do appreciate you asking! Hahaha no the orange peel was due to my airbrush malfunctioning mixed with cold weather. Effectively the lacquer was partly drying by the time it even reached the piece and ended up with some pretty gnarly orange peel. Although I have installed this set on a door I mostly wanted to see how well it holds up with extended use - As soon as the lacquer is worn through on the knobs I’ll end up refinishing it and hopefully it’ll go a bit smoother this time haha. I appreciate the kind words!
Hahaha it's definitely an odd finish, but was surprisingly super popular back in the day for many items made of metal such as staplers, vent grates, hardware, etc. Thanks a lot for watching!

Hey Tim, I appreciate it! It's definitely a bit of a funky finish but I couldn't resist recreating it haha. It is indeed - I restored the door while I was at it since someone had given it the ol' 20 coats of white paint treatment in the past and it was looking pretty shabby haha. It looks great on the door they go together very nicely. What did you use to strip the door, I have a couple of them I am thinking about redoing...same sort of paint over.

@@Tim-57 Sorry for the late reply, Tim, but I used a Klean-Strip Aircraft Paint Remover for stripping the paint off the door. I lost about four weekends just paint stripping the door since there was a lot of stubborn paint in the corners - Long story short, it was a lot more work than expected haha. Thanks! Great video...how did you get the knobs to be straight up and down when the door was closed...the ones in my house are cocked to the side when closed.

It was an interesting video. I couldn't believe how many dents and cuts this lock had. It must had been removed from a door by a gorilla.
I'll be honest, not sure I like the finish. Kinda strange. I know you showed all of the manufacturers did it. It's the first time I ever saw it.

Hahaha right, this lock clearly met the wrong person some time in the past! Totally understandable, it's a pretty funky looking finish, especially when compared to what's offered these days. I really didn't like this style at first, but after a year or so it grew on me for some reason haha.
I've been pretty busy the last couple months and had to rush a bit to get this one done, so definitely less commentary than usual with this video, but I'm doing alright - I do appreciate you asking!

Is this finish supposed to mimic a tortoise shell effect? Not my favourite finish but a beautiful restoration nonetheless.
Hahaha no the orange peel was due to my airbrush malfunctioning mixed with cold weather. Effectively the lacquer was partly drying by the time it even reached the piece and ended up with some pretty gnarly orange peel. Although I have installed this set on a door I mostly wanted to see how well it holds up with extended use - As soon as the lacquer is worn through on the knobs I’ll end up refinishing it and hopefully it’ll go a bit smoother this time haha. I appreciate the kind words!
