Didn’t realize what a blessing this album would be during quarantine. Every time I play it, I’m spirited away from my dim urban apartment to some place with cold, clean air, and impossibly bright stars
Snow Burdened Branches is (in my opinion) one of the best atmospheric black metal songs ever made. Before I heard Panopticon I thought America wasn't able to produce quality black metal, but Panopticon changed my mind upon that. Today I went to the forest to pick up mushrooms, and listening to this at the same time made me feel so-fucking-good. Kiitos tästä Panopticon and big thumbs up from Finland!
i would fully agree with you, the USA makes nothing good, but sometimes when an individual comes to be themselves, it no longer matters where they are they simply become ---------------------
So I am totally into Panopticon, Alcest, and Les Discrets and took the time to learn more about Austin Lunn (headman of Panopticon). I am so intrigued by the fact that this music takes a lot of its inspiration from the beauty of the Northern Minnesota wilderness. Listening to this album invokes a feeling of open space, cold air, and the primordial thirst for the forest. I would say if you like Panopticon and respect the message take a look at some of the interviews concerning this album and learn more about Austin Lunn and why the album transitions from black metal to Appalachian folk and bluegrass and how inspired that is. I feel like anymore I am drawn to an idea rather than a specific genre of music and the fact that this album, and a lot of Austin's work, speaks to me in that way only testifies to the fact that like minds attract each other no matter what boundaries or labels society tries to get us to conform to. So being on this schtick with this music after learning more about Austin and about his brewery, where he is head brewer, I decided I wanted to take the time to experience brewing as well while listening to this album and I couldn't help but think about the ideas that this album invokes and demonstrates and how it really is about the simple things more than anything else and the sooner we can learn that or unlearn our complacency with complication, the sooner we can experience life to it's fullest.
I agree on many of those things, but neglecting complication is not the way. Austin sings in this album about the forests and nature in general and how we are affecting them negatively by failing to think about and address the negative consequences of our actions upon them. This is a problem that requires careful thinking and complex and deliberate solutions.
This thing is a BEAST. First listen answered a lot of internal frustrations that I have regarding future lifestyle choices. Everyone needs the woods, man. No other project, or group, emphasizes that message in a way like Panopticon. I'd rather be poor and living primitively than have a life full of confusion and affluence.
To so masterfully span a variety of different genres and so competently execute each one, truly takes a passion towards this specific sound. Black metal, American traditional folk with good chunks of the bluegrass sound, and a healthy neofolk approach - all in one album. Hats off to Panopticon.
One of Panopticon’s best releases. Satisfying on so many levels and just all around breathtaking. I still think it was/is one of the finest records of the year now past.
Best release of 2018?? This album ( so far 3 songs in ) has already pulled me in a bunch of different directions. Can't wait to finish it. I hope to see this man live.
Pre-ordered this on vinyl months ago. Paid 60 dollars which is justifiable for 4 LP's and all the work they put into the art and packaging. My record player broke a few days before it arrived in the mail. So now I am listening to it on youtube.....
For me, the album is best played in the opposite order, with the country/folk part playing during the hike, while I play the black metal at the mountains summit or while stopping to rest in the woods
"We got ravens, call the bird squad, we got ravens!" This is awesome! I loved their name and the album title, added to them to a playlist. I love it; It's unique and heavy/haunting, fantastic production. Everything's audible. Thanks for the upload and I'll certainly be checking out more of their stuff!
Wow this is not what I expected. I feel like this is sort of in the same catagory as Lurker Of Chalice... Some sort of brilliant avant-garde creations. I absolutely love it.
Never heard of this band before. All I can say is that I am really glad I tripped over them. Very melodic. I am a huge metal fan,of all subdivisions there of. This has made the always expanding list. I always dig the bands that base their influence of their music on a outdoor/nature,nordic-like philosophy. Very surprising to hear that sound coming from a U.S. based talent/band. Scandinavian bands usually capture that sound with perfection. Kudos!!
For sure, I figured someone had to do it, so it only made sense to since I love this album so much. Ever since the single for Sheep in Wolves' Clothing was released over a year ago I've been anticipating the release of this album as well, and it was more than worth the wait. 👌
My number one for the year has never been more evident than in 2018. Nobody has had my attention more adamantly for one hour, much less two. What a ride.
listening to this laying in the dark, you feel the epic assault of sound waves on the ears and body, but it feels like the aura of music is coming from within A Ridge Where The Tall Pines Once Stood absolutely annhilated my being, enormously purifying music
This album is not too be missed!Greatest musicianship in the world is showcased on this record!Touched me & content do I feel as a result to musical pleasure on offer here!!!
I'm feeling so stupid for missing this when it first came out. This is great, truly diverse and musically interesting for someone who was about to be done with metal. Never realy cared for country music but it works here and i like it.
So, quite often I agree with Anthony Fantano's reviews...but for sure not this time. This album absolutely rules and builds upon the prior works of an already stellar output for Panopticon.
Agreed. I understand his reasoning for some of the things he had listed (the layered or buried vocals, as some would prefer them to be more prominent), although he's right that the previous three albums do set an incredibly high expectation that might not be to his personal liking, which is fair I suppose. I personally think this is one of the best albums to come out this year, we'll see if I end up enjoying it more than Autumn Eternal, though.
I almost always find myself in agreement with the pro's and con's listed by Fantano. But I still find the flaws don't detract from the experience for me as much as they do for him. He reviews hundreds of albums a year, I bet that changes his listening experience a great deal.
@@badgoy8439 I like critics because they introduce me to a lot of new music. They dicuss what influences they hear in a paticular album, I'll check out that band and buy their music somtimes. The score they give the music is irrelevant for me.

I love metal, but I've never been a fan of black metal. I'm still not, it's like I haven't found the right emotions to feel when I hear it. It was the same with a lot of death metal, and then I figured out what I was feeling and became attached to it. I hope I can enjoy black metal one day for records like these. You say everything I've ever wanted someone to say in a song. Free ourselves from consumption, and look towards where we came from. The forest. The Americana sections might be my favorite music ever, I'm unbelievably in love with your music. And I have felt your message for years prior, I just never knew it. I have always been in love with our glorious winters, and the thought of it disappearing scares me.
Jesus...my first listen of this one tonight, I've been a big fan of Austin's since he put out Kentucky originally, but I didn't even realize he had a new album coming out until last week (been out of the loop for a while on music). I don't think I've been this surprised by an album since Spectral Lore's III album, or Oak Pantheon's In Pieces. Great work, I can tell you put a lot of hard work into this one and it came out great.

[Foot] left the road
By the temperance river
Superior [bringing it for] years
She passed through valleys
Of the once s[coured] hills
[Nothing the astral wheels]
Winter was short
Abnormally dry
Snowfall had been so slight
The sun had set
Yet the journey she made
Under the northern lights
But the cabin wasn’t far [for a drunkard]
So she followed the guide of the stars
The thaw had been early
Not a stitch of green
And the fear grew in her heart
She stumbled through the spruce
Turned a blind corner
Just shy of a cabin up the way
There it stood
Like a tall dark shadow
Bringer of her last day
Morning came
They scoured the woods
But there was neither sight nor sound
And to this day
The [grotto] remains
But it is all they found
But if you listen
Between the waves
There echoes her last breath drawn
Under the northern lights
By the temperance river
She rides that beast into the dawn
