Which UV-17 are you REALLY getting?

- There are now SO many variants of the UV-17 (on seller sites - at least) that most of us don't know what we are getting!
Confusion, frustration, anger, and in the end, we are still not too sure!
Very FEW versions are actually BAOFENG marketed, the rest are seller variants, or just misrepresented by sellers to move their merchandise!
This quick view looks at three different versions (the first one I got scammed on), the REAL UV-17 Pro GPS (UV-17PG - as agreed on user groups), and the new UV-17R from Baofengradios.com.
Hope this helps clear some of the dust ....

and New multiband UV-5RM works under the UV17
I got a UV 17 PRO MAX. No charge stand, no book, no headset. From TEMU
I got the 17 L Pro Ver2 Nom GPS Tri-band. Having banks is cool but for what I seen in videos its wonky. As to the GPS, i don't find it useful. I do think any ver besides the R is better has for all the reasons you stated. Key selling points for me for the L is its fully open, TRI-band, and has usb-c. Thanks for the vid.
You mean fully opened as being able to transmit GMRS and Frs? Where did you purchase it?
@@PatrickBuffman ebay
The giant uv5rm are the same internal radio. If I had known that. I would have got the 17pro. GPS I'm not so big on. I will offer to trade you 2 uv5rm for 2 of the 17. Or 1 for 1.
Where does a UV-17 Pro Max fall?
I have a uv-17 pro Max is there such a radio the airband does not work so that tells me something right there I bought it off of temu was advertised as uv-17 Promax quad and as you see where the battery is it lists the Bands that the radio is supposed to work on but doesn't work on airband or anything below 100 megahertz
Yeah, I seem to have wasted my money on 2 of these! 😞
There is a unlock sequence for it.. ill find it and add the link it to this comment..
I will eagerly wait for that information! Thank you.
Still locked in FIRMWARE, no one has come up with a solution yet ....
I just bought one UV17, and I'm a little disapointed because some good options are just missing, but I thought I will get them with this radio. Obviously I should buy some better version like PRO or L...
Does that radio have the gps way point marker on the top of the shell
I am confused. If it will not transmit on 136-174 & 400-520 because is locked wtf is this device for? Just for listening? -.-
I got my now, and the airband sounds like xxxx, if you want quality on airband the Quangshen is the way to go (modded)
It's probably vendors mislabeling them, because they have no idea there are a ton of variations out there...and why would they... it's a UV 17 pro, we'll stick that on the sales listing.
Is the GMRS thing a V1 vs V2 thing because I can use my brand new UV-17 on GMRS20 and has usb charging.
What was the vendor that sold you the 17 pro gos
Can the battary with the USB charging be put in the radio w/o the capability and everything work/charge correctly? Thanks
9:20 - Obvious solution is to swap a USB-C chargeable battery to the UV-17R radio you want to use, or buy a compatible battery with USB-C charging. I upgraded my UV-82HP batteries to USB charging, although I suspect that the large batteries are still the same large size but lost a lot of capacity because it's cheaper to sell a battery with much less capacity than advertised.
It is very aggravating that the consumer has no idea what radio they'll receive. We'd much rather have fewer models (and versions of models) and more focus on quality and consistency.
I'm also frustrated that Baofeng makes so many different models each with some of the features we want but no radio with all of the features we want - 8 Chinese watts (6.5 actual watts), rugged, water resistant, USB charging, large buttons, and large easy to read screen. I don't need a cheap lanyard, a 120 VAC docking port, two antennas, a cheezy earpiece/mic, etc. I don't even need a USB-C cable to charge it.
Well said!!
Do you have any idea how the display stays on permanently?
Use Chirp find "Backlight Timer" Set to Always On or manually Or "ABR" Set to on.
awesome music LOL. Which brand of air band radio, Quansheng UV-5R PLUS, Baofen, or any other, do you think is better?
At this time, I certainly prefer the UV-17PG as it seems to have the best airband reception!
@@fittoat9261 yes, I found the UV-17PG has far better air band reception than the Quansheng UV-K5, however the Radtel RT-470 has even better air band reception than the UV-17PG (based on owning all 3).
@@stevelimbrick9185 not going to disagree with you at all. I have the 870 and 890, as well as the MML (JJCC8810) and all three Shengs and now multiple UV17 🤦♂️. I do like the 17PG overall, feel, handling, banks, etc. Is the best? NO - of course not, it sure is a damn good radio for the price and what it can do! 73
@@fittoat9261 definitely, as far as feel, handling, etc. goes the 17PG has it all over the RT-470 and others I've got had (UV-K5, UV-13 Pro v2, RT-470, etc.) - and for the price it's fantastic
How to turn it to gmrs 5 like at beginning of video
USB on radio w/ BCMs were blowing up on planes in China. Happened twice, and never reported.
Then how did you find out ?
There’s actually such thing out there as the Baofeng Uv 17r Pro Max it’s so “real”
Just received a UV-17L from TEMU...
Labeled as UV-17 pro plus
Has the nicer screen...
There gona drop a full line of radios on us
Good grief, they already HAVE! And still dropping more - it seems like everyday!
Flexing a $29 Chinese radio with a Rolex flash. lol ...
That cheap Chinesium too...
The UV 17R is the worst model of them all. Its a very dirty radii as regards harmonics
The FCC pulls me over constantly checking my radio stickers.
Love it! LOL
They are constantly knocking on my door and contacting me at work to ensure I have my license with me at all times while carrying any radio.
Oh they also constantly show up and check the radios we all use on the FRS and murs channels to make sure our antennas can't be removed from the radio...
😂😂
Guys if your buying a UV-17 for airband forget it.....any sig with any sort of strength.....it will be so distorted to be unreadable.....weak sigs are not to bad but the sensitivity is also poor.
I need to figure out a way to reduce the strength the incoming airband sigs.....very short antenna maybe.
I only bought it for use at the airport when I go for a ride on my motorcycle.
Its fine on 2m and 70cm here in the UK.
But only bought it for airband use.

Excellent Review. Very thorough.
So many versions of the UV17 to chose from.
Thank you John! I appreciate it!
Thanks a lot, for your interesting video, I order a UV17Pro GPS I hope it comes with FCC seal
If anyone knows how to unlock these please let me know 😅
I'd like to get a UV-17 - as a replacement / upgrade for my UV-5R. What I believe I'd like is just a better UV-5R (display primarily), USB-C charging, and air band. I also live near an airport and I'm an aviation guy, work for an aviation company...
I'm still waiting for the dust to settle on figuring out exactly which model UV-17 and which vendors have which variations.
The real replacement for the UV-5R is now the UV-17R, but it does NOT have airband! There is a brand new UV-5RH which has the bigger color screen and airband, but it is still very new with very little information.
You can now download CPS for the UV-17R from Baofengradio.com, just go to the DOWNLOAD page, you'll find it there. Or on Miklor.com it is the T-6UV CPS!.
Do you have a list of 10 watt handhelds? Google isn't much help these days
So basically we don’t know what we gunna get unless baofeng emails us personally.
Also, no usb charging and no unlocking? Trash.
and UV-17 Pro v2
Temu advertised a UV-17 pro. Once I made payment they said they were sending me the "basic" model. When I received it, I sent it back unopened. I ordered a UV-5R and received it today. I'm in Canada. No (need for) FCC sticker.
👍
There must be hundred of variants! - i have ordered one, looking exactly like the black one in the video, but WTIH Usb!!
That would be annoying to order the pro and get the R
These plethora of Baofengs report better than weather balloons 😂😂😂😂
LOL
Have you ever seen a DC power back for the 17 series? Cig plug type? I've done some looking and have not found one yet.
Have not found OR seen one yet. And at about $20 a spare battery ..... for a $24 radio .... hmmmm.
So is the UV-17 Pro Unlocked? or is it the same at the UV-17 R? only allowing transmissions on HAM frequencies?
I ordered one that ended up being a UV-17.... Which I must say is a piece of junk. Audio is so bad I can't stand to listen to it. All highs and now lows. And, no way to adjust the bass or treble. You have to love Chinese junk.
You act like this is a new problem. The boggling array of different labels and versions of the UV-5R has been a shit show for years. Where have you been?
У меня UV -17pro L?
The uv 17 pro gps is not the same as the uv 13 pro...the latter has a much better receiver
Mine is labeled UV 17 pro Max
I've got the blue screen 17 that you showed first... is it my imagination, or will it transmit on any frequency you tell it to?
Pretty much!
Yes all very confusing. There's not just the different screens but different font styles, male or female voices, slightly different symbols on the buttons. There is also a UV17 Pro V2 showing up now.
😂That’s typical Chinese with 10000 different names qinqong, bengon, shinshin, maqin, kingkong and all are same

LOL
I have the Pro V2 I do like it, but it is one of the worse screens in direct sunlight I have ever used. It is so bad I am considering trying to find a screen filter for it!
Got my 17 pro GPS yesterday. For $20, its a steal.
What you firmware version?

AliExpress! Don’t remember the seller ….
Is there a 17 pro that doesn’t have gps? The one I’m looking at online says uv-17 pro (sometimes pro max) but doesn’t mention gps at all, otherwise looks the same. I just want it to be legal.
just saw it. just don’t know what I’m getting. Also, as far s usability (for two way walkie talkie in the mountains) does having 6 bands over two on some models offer any real life benefit?
Can this program on chirp and if so what model should I use that would work
None!!! CHIRP does not work with ANY of the UV-17s!
@fittoat9261 i think they support it now
I have the same modeo as the black one, i was talking in the 476mhz range yesterday no problem, and it also has type c usb
Appearance wise, all the 17s look the same irrespective of color! Which model it actually is, differs on the inside, and whether it is locked or not!
@@fittoat9261 mines green. But has the same screen, menu, and features as the black one, except I can talk on the bands this video says this model is locked out of
@@offgridasI need this for the bands you were talking about. Are you sure it’s not a UV-21? I’ve seen those green and look very similar? Could you check the back of the radio and let me know exactly what model # and where u got it from?

Does anyone know how to get a numerical reading of battery voltage on the UV-17R? Pressing "0" like on other Baofengs doesn't work. Thanks!
Mine is a UV-17M and there's no FCC nothing on this radio. It's a definite upgrade from the UV-5R but it isn't the UV-17 Pro GPS either. So I instead purchased a new TYT UV-8000E which really is an upgrade to a Baofeng!! I'll let you know about that after I've had a chance to use it for a spell.
Hey, you forgot about the UV-17 Pro Max! 😅 BTW, I got a UV-17R (purchased 2/21/24) from Amazon with USB-C charging, the FCC ID, and came not locked to transmit only on amateur bands.
Chirp programming is now possible (at least for some of the UV-17 brands) by downloading the issue #10648 in the pulldown menu "help" . THX to Terry Kennedy
so funny , it doesnt matter , Only follow the community , who's building firmware for what, keep it simple simion . the firmware builders will stay with the same model for yrs and crack open the base firmware so well. I think quadshang seems to be the go. , uv5 model is well supported
How do I know what version I have? Mine has GPS, and dual channels. isn't that the pro gps?
The 2 uv17r's i just bought have the USB (c charger) on the battery
I got the UV17-ProV2 it supposed to say it is waterproof, though have tested most things except that yet. I do like the Handheld, but the screen is terrible in direct sunlight, even considering if I can get a screen filter to use on it to improve the screen in sunlight!
Can you actually buy direct from BAOFENG and how? Thanks
Well I just canceled my order for that unit if it's locked I don't want it
We ordered a UV15 "PRO MAX" JUST A UV-17 BASIC (NEW FORMAT)
Seems they got one to Chuck KK6USY also same as you got. You share the same affiliate link I see as I bought one from his that night. Wondering if this is mostly a matter of firmware? Might be fun to find all the files and see what happens.
They are puking out models and versions
where did u get da gps version from
Won't work with chirp
I like the idea on one of these radios with the airband.....which model do I get.
Wonder....can anybody say how the airband version performs.
Some handheld talkies with airband are near useless.....
Nick in the UK.
Hi Nick, if you go for the Baofeng, you would have to get the UV17 Pro GPS. Mind you there are many CONFUSING models on the market, ONLY the Pro GPS has Airband. That said, I personally like the new Tidradio H3. A little bit more expensive, but better build quality and many more features, including Bluetooth programming, and NOW also USB C programming!!! See my video on that one, and coming soon my second review on the newer production model with improvements and items I mention in the video. Also check my video on the new Baofeng 5RM, which also has Airband. All these radios do OK on Airband reception, nothing like a true scanner would, but they still work good.
UV17R LOL
Which UV-17 has best display for outdoor use? What I have understood the UV-17 and UV-17 Pro GPS isn’t that good. Is it the the UV-17 R?
The display is pretty similar, I have a hard seeing my iPhone in the sun ….. hope this helps …
I had the updated screen version delivered today. The screen didn’t work. Returning tomorrow.
That is very disappointing! Hope it gets taken care of for you.
Full version is (H) Gps.
Hello friend, do you have any reference of the UV-21R? 73 LU3FBM
No, no yet anyway!
I just received a UV17 Pro Max. No GPS.
Unfortunately, the 17 Pro Max does not have GPS! Misleading advertising from unscrupulous sellers sadly!
I'm very much an amateur and I don't know how 'unlocking' the UV17R makes a difference. I did unlock my UV5R and put in all the GMRS frequencies and when I got my UV17R I entered all those frequencies on it, too and now all four radios can communicate with each other. What would 'unlocking' the UV17R do that I haven't already done? All four radio's have all of the 462 and 467 frequencies. Oh, I'm on the way to getting my license.
A lot of newer radios come locked to certain frequencies like HAM bands and do not work on MURS or GMRS, it seems yours is fine, nothing else needs to be unlocked! Enjoy!
@@fittoat9261 Wow! That's great! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer.

Very good! Clear and loud.
What is the power output in W. It says it has a power output of 10W, is that correct? It is about 17pro.
Can you tell me more about the BAOFENG UV-10R where it says the output power is 16W.
It is very important to me that it has a large output power and that it has a large communication range
All the UV-17 I have are at or under 5 W!!!! Any other Baofeng I have tested which is rated 10W, does less than 8W!
I am in aircraft maintenance and i am kind of looking for something that i can do coms checks on aircraft as well as communicate with co workers like a walkie talkie.. does a such radio exist?
Airband radio?😂
Yeasu makes several airband transceivers in the $300-400 range. If you are patient Baofeng will get this model number thing straightened out. You can’t beat an airband receiver built into a $30.00 walkie talkie.
@@bulldogbrower6732 what grinds my arse is the only reason they are $400 is because they transmit on airband.. i was hoping to be able to do short transmissions on airband with a under $100 radio that you can hack/reflash to unlock airband i am sure most of the guys on my shift would grab one ASAP.
What about the UV-21 pro?
What about it? It’s not a UV-17, which is what this video is about!
It's a "dirty" radio with 4 harmonics.

I finally found the CPS for my blue screen 17. It was on Miklor's site, labeled Baofeng UV-18H nonGPS (P15UV v1.04).
As I mentioned in the video, YES, most are actually NOT GPS radios! There are so many variants to this model, each vendor tries to get more sales by reducing features when they order, (a few pennies at best) and they sell them like crazy! It has to say 17Pro GPS otherwise it is not!
Baofeng radios are basically splatter boxes. You'd be better off buying a quality yaesu radio. What did you expect in quality for $29 ?
stick to the UV-5R and jail break it i don't care about 999 memory i care about transmitting and receiving on as many frequencies as possible.
I neither endorse NOR condone jailbreaking or unlocking radios! To each their own!
im not saying you do i
what i am saying 12 year old airsofters and paintballers have been doing it for years@@fittoat9261
To jailbreak a UV-5R is simple, hold the push to talk and the orange VFO/MR button simultaneously and turn the radio on. This works for all models of UV-5Rs, including the 8 Watt. I have 9 UV5-Rs including 4 of the 8 Watt Gen 3 model purchased this year.
I think you have to go into CHIRP also after doing that...Easy enough though. This is all to use 1.25m band, but UV-17L has tri-band without needing to unlock and on another YT channel a guy commenting tested output on all 3-bands and it was pushing 6.3watts on 220. Higher than the other 2.
true but then you cant get all the other freq. , like MURS, GMRS and Marine@@MrDLRu
I have the black one its the real one got it from them on Amazon less then 30 dollars
The ‘real’ one?? They are ALL ‘real’! You got a variant - probably the 17R, because the 17PG (Pro GPS) is NOT available on Amazon, and it is not $30! But enjoy it anyway!
An FCC ID means absolutely nothing to a ham. After all, we are licensed to design and build our own rigs. But we are required to ensure that ALL our rigs, commercial or home-brew are clean and the harmonic content meets the FCC specifications. If you lack the ability to verify that your signals from each radio are clean I'd suggest you get in touch with a helpful ham or a club to use a TinySA to verify your rigs meet the harmonic requirements you are legally responsible to meet. Far too many hams recently don't seem to understand the responsibilities that come with the license.
I recently inherited a couple of these, handheld radios. When my younger 64-year-old brother, suddenly passed on a couple of months ago. And while I have been a lifelong Broadcaster. And FCC, Lifetime, 1st Class Radiotelephone License. And gave up being an amateur. 54 years ago. I don't think I have any need to keep any of these, multiple 2 meter, multi-ham band, computerized walkie-talkie thingies. And the couple of,, mobile base station like units as well. One is that, Icon, Micro, 705? I don't have everything written down right now. It's in the other room. It's not the latest unit. It's one unit before. The 700 series. Like $1300 new. And he's got all the extra accessories and base station like housing in bright orange.
I have to document everything I have of his. I've got all the original boxes as well. All the manuals exist, all over the place here. And I have to be culling them, back together again. And everything is still like virtually brand-new. He died without ever getting a chance to use much of anything. He was a Ham Operator for less than one year. I'm terribly sad. He never got a chance to pursue his new Ham Hobby. And I keep crying my eyes out. I don't know life, without my younger brother. He didn't take proper care of his health. He let himself go, badly. His marriage never really worked after 25 years. All he needed was a little love from her. He never got it. And that's another reason why I don't have my younger brother anymore.
I've got at least 3 mobile base station, devices. And 3 of these handheld units. Not certain of any of them are Bo Fang? I think one is a Radio oddity or Radio idiot? One an, Icon. One is a Yaesu or something? Nothing is RadioShack, thankfully. And I don't have anybody to talk to!. And who am I going to talk to on, 2 meter? Somebody at the 7-11 6 blocks away? What kind of Skip can you get on, 2 meter? At least down to Charlie's Bar, 6 blocks away.
It was all a lot more fun when I was much much younger and personal computers didn't exist. Neither did the Internet. And it's hard for me to comprehend. How I lived in such prehistoric times? Only 10 years ago.. Before a smart phone got reasonably intelligent. And ended up controlling our electric cars and flying vehicles. Who knew?
There is but one thing to remember. And soon as I can I'll let you know.
RemyRAD
