Another small town in Minnesota considers disbanding its police force

  • Paul Folz is the chief of police for the Spring Grove Police Department -- and is only its only officer. He's planning to retire by the end of the year and the city of 1300 residents is considering disbanding its police force, opting instead to sign a law enforcement contract with the local sheriff's' office. Other small towns across the country are facing similar tough choices.

    I’m glad that at the beginning of the story they pointed out that many industries are having staffing shortages right now. Customer service jobs and any job where you need to be face to face with the public is having trouble recruiting right now (and, of course, police often need to be face-to-face with the public). It’s just harder in general having customer-facing jobs (for instance, being a flight attendant).

    Ask yourself who benefits from a lack of law and order? The past two years sentiment against law enforcement has gotten out of hand because of politics, money, careers. It has harmed public safety in this country. Leaders and media must work hard to rectify this. The next time you cover law enforcment, think of yourself or a loved one dialing for help and not being able to get it.

      Imagine people expecting law-enforcement to be professional and to do their jobs with expert knowledge and social and psychological awareness. The wrong people are police officers and that’s the problem. Law-enforcement is a noble profession and therefore needs the right mindset in the right people in the job. Not everyone is cut out to be an officer just because they get hired as one. There’s no need to make this into right and wrong or black-and-white thinking. There is nuance here and people expect that when you hire a professional, that they act professionally.
      Now, adult men who cannot have their way and police in any old way they choose are quitting the profession and throwing temper tantrum‘s and work slow downs. How professional. We are in for a bumpy ride because there is such a large shortage and people will get hurt, but eventually a new generation of law-enforcement will emerge who will be better trained and act like professionals. Local politician sure don't want police. These would be easy to solve, just make a federal law that forbids populations to become/ stay cities with their own political administrations and collecting their own taxes without having their own 24h/ 7d/ 365d fire and police department with enough people, equipment and installations for the population of that area, say in police around at least 1% of the population should be police officers. For sure police and fire services would become suddenly very popular well paid jobs (with huge marketing by the politicians and their friends)... otherwise someone else would be getting those local taxes and making decisions.
    In these case by my made up rule of 1% there should exist around at least 13 police officers working in the city. Damn it in some small countries you can't even have a security company with less than 15 security officers! But in US you can have a police department with just 1 police officer... that is really crazy.

    Departments waste more money than anyone. Driving home in a police suv not paying for the gas the money wasted on a cops funeral is a joke. It goes on for days. Most cops get paid over &200.000 a year not to mention overtime.

    If we can’t hold our police to a higher standard then yes I support closing them down, this story doesn’t give the details but there is A police problem but it’s not cuz there’s too few lol.
    To the ppl who love and support cops no matter what - it’s not that we r bad ppl, u just don’t understand why we feel this way, u ppl have never seen/ delt with police brutality big or small.
    Besides u ppl think exactly like the cops do.

      We need private Police then if they fuck up and violate our rights they would get fired immediately. There would be no qualified immunity to dance around and allow cops to kill people, rape, and rob people and then just move departments. Cops are the lowest IQ people in society they won't hire them if they score to high on the test.

    I still do not understand why 5 minus k towns do need own police department for the area. All they do is sit on incorpoprated highways doing the state police or county jobs, just to get revenue from speeders (and I do condone speeders and drunks drivers)) ,but mostly it is everyone you know and use your authority upon.

      Never in history of the police have they actually stopped a crime before it happened. They've always been corrupt. They are scum. I would love to say there are some good cops out there but no. Those few good ones are watching the bad ones operate and doing nothing. That's worse.

  • @DonChounardable
    @DonChounardable ปีที่แล้ว

    policing by the sheriff's department at the county level is just one step closer to the federal government policing communities. Furthermore worse yet would be civilians policing without proper training. That being said it's not an uncommon belief that even the current police departments are at minimum level of training which would mean that civilians should just become police officers with the amount of training necessary to police neighborhoods. I think most importantly Missouri has it right where they don't allow state officers to assist in investigations from federal officers

    My little sister found out what it's like to date somebody related to a judge and accounting clerk, she was kidnapped when she was 13 and taking across two state lines of molested by two men grossly. Now they couldn't press charges against their own people so he got to get away with it until 15 years later and a bunch of dead girls were found lying around hacked up dead. Well, that's when the feds got in and they couldn't do anything to help him. That's just what happens when law is conducted with criminals. It's a red flag thing, if it happens you get rid of the trash, you don't keep it and try to learn to make money with it. You go to hell for that

      Hahahaha he was a violent criminal. Still not a reason for cops to do that but he was OD'ing on drugs as well there is just so many factors not spoke of. Even more reason to have private policing then those coos would immediately be charged with crimes and prosecuted no qualified immunity. The cops lawyers and judges are all corrupt working together.
