    You have given a lot of good advice. However there’s one personal observation on how to get the drawing on the large paper. I have devoted almost 30 decades to learn how to draw. Tracing a drawing has so little value to help develop our drawing skills. Knowing that I can do an 8”x10” (inches), or a 10’x20’(feet) drawing gives me a feeling of freedom and control and creativity seems to flow with ease, huge pluses. Drawing should be an essential skill to develop, at any scale or art size. I did only oils, now I’m devoted to only learning watercolors. Your videos have been of great help. Making this new journey much more enjoyable. Thank you and congratulations for the good job you do!

    • @Forgefaerie
      @Forgefaerie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      agreed, though tracing can still be very valuable. allow me to explain. when you sketch on canvas before painting in oils, you do not need to be super cautious or careful, as the paint will cover your sketch. with watercolor - unless you are a drawing savant, capable of sketching without having to do any corrections at all right away? you are going to adjust, erase, etc... and THAT both damages the watercolor paper and tends to show through transparent washes. and that is where tracing really comes in handy. I no longer sketch directly on watercolor paper when it comes to longer form paintings. (I still do direct practice sketches and plein air, but when drawing from photo reference? nope). I do a sketch on drawing or sketch paper the same size as my final drawing and once that sketch is nice and good to go, all of the placement and corrections done? I trace it via lightbox onto my actual watercolor paper. it helps soooooo much to preserve the paper sizing etc. and.. this also means you can do a digital sketch or scan a sketch in and trace it via Liron's methods.

      @@Forgefaerie I always trace onto water color paper for the same reason. I will occasionally trace straight from my photo as well- which still carries a stigma, but catching a likeness in a portrait is almost impossible otherwise no matter how well I’ve learned to draw hands, fingers and faces…😅

    Thank you!! You gave me all the answers I was looking for. My biggest takeaway is using a TV for tracing. It never occured to me. And I would love to add to your point 7. An inexpensive MDF Board of 9 mm or 11mm thickness can be used as a base to tape the paper. That way we have the flexibility to move around the painting, propping it up in angle. Its lightweigh. It can be put over a smaller work desk too. Thanks again!!

    So Liron I am new to your channel and am so happy to follow you and subscribe. I plan on going thru most all of your videos. I like the absolute honesty you bring to your viewers and now myself. I need the pushing and prodding to be creative and not be fearful. I am not the greatest sketcher but I draw well, I am a decent artist but I just want to be better at watercolor. I want to create all the time. Your channel when I came upon it spoke directly to me. I am so happy to have found your channel and I feel like you are a real artist who is speaking to the common everyday person who just wants to create and have something to show for the effort. Thank you I am just grateful for finding you.

    Wow- great painting!!! I always do a grid on drawing paper and then trace the the finished drawing onto the watercolor paper- less erasing. My watercolor teacher wants me to paint a2 watercolors with complex subjects (like David head on a chair, with a glass of wine, torn grapefruit and a vase of dry roses standing on the floor). No watercolor paper could stand so much drawing, so I had to invent a process. Thank you, I used some of your tips. I print black and white photo of the still life in a5. I separate it in 4 parts with lines to understand what and how is positioned to the center and then I draw it all on full size drawing paper. When I am happy with it, I trace it to the watercolor paper. Quite a process, but I enjoy the ride.

    Thanks for helpful tips. Good you weren’t limited by board size & the paper turned out pretty flat. As usual you inspire me!
    I’ve never done larger than half sheet. Usually florals so not as demanding in terms of accuracy & realism. When I think I’ll need to do a lot of trial & error I’ll draw on a sheet of drawing paper same size as my watercolour paper; once I am satisfied I use graphite transfer paper to transfer my own drawing to watercolour paper…but those graphite lines are very unforgiving even when I’ve already reused it multiple times. I guess I don’t have a light enough touch but I’ve heard there is a brand that lifts out better but not carried by my preferred local store, yet, but I’d love to know the name of the manufacturer of this product.

    I place or tape my paper on a sheet of White Correx Plastic Polypropylene Fluted Display Board. It's lightweight and non-porous (wetting the board will keep your paper wet for longer), sizes A4-A1 (plus I think some suppliers cut to order), you can get away with using thinner paper too. If you want white borders just tape the paper edges.

    Hi Lion. To save countless hours of free drawing (and unfortunately erasing on delicate watercolor paper) take your reference photo to a copy store and have it enlarged to desired size in black and white. Place the xerox over the watercolor paper and use graphite paper between the xerox and the paper. Using a ballpoint pen that has run out of ink GENTLY trace the large shapes and general details. One now has a great initial drawing that needs only some minor corrections and final details drawn in. The graphite will easily erase so only faint reference lines will remain so they won’t be seen in the finished painting.

    Really wonderful selfie. How long would your painting have taken you? Also thanks again. I Value your tips and wish I’d seen this yesterday before trying my first largish painting. 14” x 11” . However happy with my subject a sun-drenched, white wash Turkish building with lots of blue sky. I certainly should have mixed up more blue and grey paint prior. I agonised over the drawing to get the architecture angles right and think I got them and the aspect, so that time paid off. Stepping back always helps me. I’ve previously made use of graphite paper I made myself out of necessity with nothing available in the little village. Made it larger than what I’ve seen for larger duplications of my own drawings. Transferring well to my watercolour paper using a tiny little ball point tracing tool from the craft store. I agree grid can get tedious.
