  • E13 End of Fall: Greasy Hollow Memories
I spent a beautiful fall afternoon with Ralph Robertson exploring Powell Valley in this episode of “Greasy Hollow Memories”. At 95 years old, Ralph Robertson has out lived most of his friends. Recently, his best friend and neighbor, Keith Shorty Berry past away. We go to visit Shorty's son Scott while he is cleaning out Shorty’s sheds. Scott grew up in Greasy Hollow and has been going to the Robertsons store since he was a kid. Scott shares some of his Greasy Hollow Memories with us as we sit and visit in the backyard.

My Grandpa's name was Ralph, Ralph Strohbehn. He was a farmer in central Iowa. He raised corn, beans and cattle. I loved listening to Ralph. I have a great appreciation for the elderly and I can tell you do too. There's nothing better than listening to old time stories. I miss my Grandparents a lot. I'm 56 and I'm a Grandma 8×'s now, so I have an even greater appreciation for what my Grandparents did for us as kids. They always kept us for a couple weeks in the summer and of coarse the Holidays were huge, with all the cousins at Grandpa and Grandma's house. Everyone stayed yhe whole weekend and it was mighty busy. They had a huge two story stucco farm house and I loved sleeping on the sleeping porch in the big feather bed! Memories that I still hold dear today and my kids do too!

Both of my Pap paw Passed away long long before I was born, I found out at 54 years old after both my Mother and Father passed away that myDad who raised me wasn’t my Biological Father. He passed away in 2006 at 72 years old but I did found a few family member who we are going to meet in September 9,10,11 so I am super excited. Poor Ralph is getting Old. A huge difference since you first started these videos. I sure love them that’s for sure.

I love the elderly and I have many elderly friends. We don't have many of them left from these days . Their story's are becoming like a faded memory and if we don't take the time to be still and listen we'll lose the blessing of a beautiful generation and seen things through their young eyes ! "Kodiak moments from the heart." That's what I call their storys..

I love Ralph! He tells it like it is, & it's just so cute. He gets around darn good for his age. He's a very remarkable man. He has a gorgeous farm. He made a good life for his family. He's raised 6 lovely girl's, & i can see that he's very proud of them all! He reminds me of my Daddy whose been gone 36 years, & would be 90 now, so yeah, i really identify & enjoy seeing Ralph!! Yall are cute sporting around together! I think Ralph appreciates your friendship and sharing his History that he's proud of and he should be Proud!
Thanks John!! Keep up this awesome work that you're sharing in Appalachia!! I love it, and all these old places , stores, oh and the Springs, love it all! Be careful! Thank you! God's Speed Only!

We watched ur channel off and on. We love it. The best part is when you were at Ralph's home and you were frying frog leg. I am so amazed at how good he gets around and the memory he remembers everytthing. One of the main reason I am writing. I am always the 1looking in the background all the pictures on the wall and i look up to seee this picture of an old house the backyard had a clothesline a couple trees it is a picture i have had on the wall in my living room..we have often wondered if who painted it and what was the home nothing fancy. It gives me the calnnest feeling .you will have to let me know where you got urs. We have one just like it. I am going to take a picture of it so you can see what I am talking about. I will take the picture later so i will send it as soon as i can. Youu are doing a wonderful thing people just don't care anymore especially when it comes to an older person they're afraid they might be asked to help in some way. It takes a a special person to do what u are doing. Hope to talk to you soon.

I'm 44and my sister is 41. My pa told me a few years before he passed that my grandma wanted me to have there place and when he passed after probate I owned it. I wonder if you could ask Ralph if his family used that spring water clay for medicine. I do here up in Maine, it's a great antibiotic antifungal mix, all natural from God. Love your channel, and love Ralph and his family. His daughters are so kind and loving people. Ralph and his wife raised them wonderfully. Please give them all a hug for me.

You really have good memories of memories of a man of age. Your doing a good thing here. Not many now of how lovely and hard the living back then was. The foundation of life. Many never seen are will never see the true beauty. But your saving this time for many to see and I hope they understand that good people and living can make the difference. Thank you for your time in making this. I truly appreciate it and understand. My paps was an old farmer who I can remember to this day.
