  • If you are about to purchase a used car, you should definitely have someone take a look at it. If you're not mechanically-minded or it isn't plausible to have a mechanic check the car out, then this video will be great for you! In this video we will show you the ins and outs of what to look for when your out shopping for a good used car.

Really happy to have learned exactly what a flashlight is used for. Ive been using it all wrong this whole time. Haha. In all honesty. Tons of good information here. I guess its better to have too much info rather than not enough.

Excellent video. I would recommend checking the coolant first while the car is cold. Start the car up, and if it bubbles up, you have a problem. Or if there’s any white corrosion around the cap.

Isn’t the white corrosion around the coolant cap just dried up coolant?

Try this at the used car dealer and look at his face as you check the fluids 😂

Great information. Now I know what mechanics are looking at (always wondered). Usually would just get a thumbs up or down with no explanation. Thanks

What if they cleaned up the engine bay?

  • @NikolaiCherepanov

You should be more concerned if an old BMW isnt leaking oil...... that usually means the engine was just cleaned to give the illusion its taken care of

Power Steering fluid is old school…..more and more modern vehicles….(2010+ MY) are coming with Electric Power Steering and no reservoir.

I would add a compression test . I am a disabled vet and used to work on all of my cars. Now not so much. I was going to buy a used 91 toyota camry back in 1996 and it had just over 110k miles on it. The guy wanted 4k for it . I check out every thing but the compression check . I bought it for 3500.00 and just 1 week later when I was replacing the plugs I found the compression was 110 112 94 114. It had a bad ring. I got burned as I had to buy a used engine to replace it with. When I tore the old engine down it had a ton of sludge in it. So I say do the compression test

      What's a compression test?

    • @chadwems
      @chadwems 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Anthro777 it checks the compression of the pistons and cylinders . if the psi is below spec you'll know what you might have to replace

How do you know if the transmission is slipping or not if you didn’t check it? I missed that part of the video.

thanks for the video. Wish it was a different car for this video as almost everything in the engine bay is black and oil is almost black so it is hard to see stuff!

What owner selling a car will allow you to do all of this ? I never get much cooperation from sellers. They want you to decide rather quickly, and almost all will make excuses when you wanna take it to a mechanic to have it inspected.

If they have an excuse not to get an inspection I would avoid buying it.

Good advice. However, I wouldn't be inspecting a used BMW. I wouldn't waste my money on a BMW. They are nothing but a money pit! Not a reliable vehicle either!

Oh, they are, people(WOMEN) neglect them and the problems get bigger, hard to buy used BMW's as most people don't maintain them, but bmw just like any other car has it's problems, their cheap materials get annoying.

Way too many overgeneralizations. Your fluid inspection methodology needs some revision.
