First video to pop up on my search. Trying to get into trout fishing and I have nothing but casting and spinning rods. This is the perfect video to help get started in trout fishing thank you! Those were some narly catches man! Got hyped when I saw the last catch!
My father taught me how to fish for trout from my earliest memories-so, over 65 years ago. You sir have got it-as good of a tutorial as I have seen. If I am going to pick on anything it is that the use of weight is way over-rated...do not use any if at all possible-only as absolutely necessary.
I like your approach to trout fishing. Thanks for posting and for the info. I will check out some of these products.
Excellent and I would say complete presentation on the what and how of flowing water trouting with a spin rod
I’ve been having so much fun spin fishing for trout I don’t think I’ll be buying a fly rod in the near future. Still so much to explore and colors to buy. Great video and catches!
I replace the treble hooks with inline single hooks or siwash. In C&R streams just crimp down the barb.
I like that idea, I'm guessing you have to put some ring on and cut the treble hook off? Ty
It’s fun to watch you catch all these amazing fish in the same places I catch only a few dinkers lol.
Sometimes it’s just luck. Lol. There are plenty of days that don’t make the channel too for sure!
@@calebwistad while I’m sure you have those days, you prove time and time again that fishing is more skill than luck.
I enjoy your videos. Using a spinning rod with flys is something new to me and this video is great info. I just became a subscriber!😊
You are my favorite fishing show, great video and as always practical USEFUL things you show. Great work.
I’d love to see some of the Northern WI trout lakes! So many around but never have any luck with them. Great video. Those rivers and streams are some of the most beautiful areas in the state!
That’s the thing I can’t seem to figure out how to fish! Hope you consider doing it one day! I would love to see a tips video similar to this.
Bringing the spinner down stream makes sense. All the trout in rivers I catch are usually on the way across the channels. Problem I will have is the rivers here are faster flowing.
One of the best tutorials on the topic, well done!
What River is that?
Thank you very much! As far as what river it is…… that’s not one I’m willing to divulge. 😆
This is great! I would imagine you would hook into some smallies in these creeks as well?
On the lower stretches where the water is a bit warmer it’s very common, yes.
Nice detailed video and very good presentation.
At ~4:42 you talk about how wonderful the Eurotackle Micro Finesse braided line is and at ~17:21 you mention Sufix 832 braided line - are both lines equal in your opinion ? or which one do you favor most ?
Also at ~14:09 you show a wet fly that you use on your spinning rod !! which is exciting to me as I didn't think it would be possible. Is that maribu tail prince nymph a weighted and what size were you using?
Thanks Thomas. I prefer Eurotackle micro braid but it only goes up to 8lb test. If I want 10 or 15 I usually use Sufix 832. The fly was a weighted bead nymph. I think I picked it up at Superior Fly Angler in Superior WI. And yes, it works great! Good luck out there!
This is the only fishing I really do. Small streams for wild brown/brook/and rainbow with short wids and spinning reels up by my grandparents camp. Its oddly hard to find non fly fishing videos for this fishing niche.
What’s a good live bait rig for this? Should I just use split shot and hook and call it a day or would perhaps a barrel swivel, bead, slip sinker, and hook be good?
I recently have been using spinners for trout here in central wisco and most of the time it seems like it spooks them whenever it lands. Any tips on having that not happen?
Just cast past them as far as possible and use a lighter spinner with feathers or hair. That will soften the landing a bit.
Hi from perth western Australia once u have hooked up do u not wind in crazy just take u time ? Longs drag set good to set hook ???
What is your opinion on using spoons?
I’ve used them with mixed results. I definitely use them vertically and in lakes more often than streams.
When they swallow the hook I cut the line as close as possible to the mouth of the trout and release them, unless they're bleeding heavily. Most hooks will rust out eventually.
Sir, I use Nightcrawlers in October November for Brown, Rainbow trout fishing? Please reply
How long is that rod and whats the weight on that rod? Is that fast action rod?
It’s a 6’6” ML Fast action St Croix Triumph. Link is in the video description.
How do you know when to set the hook if you can’t see the fish?
It’s all by feel. You have to keep the line tight as it drifts and you can feel the fish pick it up.
I know you said your reel was a 1500 series but all I can find is a 1000 and 2000, no 1500. Is yours 2000 series?
Some reel brands have a 1500 which is basically a 1000 with a larger spool. A 2000 would be ideal. A 1000 is a bit small.
Have you had success casting downstream then?
And I’m sure that trout was happy you got the lamprey off of him ha.
In certain cases, yes. Usually it’s in larger pools with big back eddies.
Can you tell me the manufacturer of the sling bag you use in the film. Thank you
Just use a float- That way you won't end up with so many deep hooked dead fish. What's the point of taking an 8 inch long fish for the table?
Dude, I love 8” to 10” trout dusted in seasoned flour and fried whole. They are absolutely delicious! There are many streams around here that don’t grow many trout larger than 12” anyway.
I’m learning how to fly fish but I will never fish with out my spin reel. Been doing that for 18 years
Wet your hands 1st.
I do. You just don’t see it on camera. I always wet my hands before handling trout I plan to release.
live bait...
@@calebwistad More like "impossible to beat". A couple years ago my brother and I fished a little brook trout lake in the Boundary Waters. He is a phenomenal fly fisherman-and he caught lots. But I was using salted minnows-on a plain hook with a small split-shot right at the hook. I was casting to shore and jigging back to the canoe. I was catching a fish every cast-lost count...15-20 inch brookies!
I used to only use fly fishing gear for trout, but I've come to really appreciate the simplicity of stream fishing with spinning gear. Last summer on a two week road trip through northern BC, I tied a silver Mepps on at the beginning of the trip and had no reason to change hooks the whole trip. I do also keep some spoons in my box though, cast farther and can be counted down deep which is occasionally beneficial.
Nice!
The best mepps in my opinion is a full siver one With the Red Points in a size like 3 or 4
