Program Note by Anne Chmelewsky - "When the NYCB directors approached me to write a piece for their annual concert,
I was absolutely thrilled. I had written a number of chamber pieces for brass
ensembles, wind quintets, as well as some percussion trios but had never got the
opportunity to write for concert band before. I was particularly interested in the
NYCB’s aim of providing young people with opportunity to play music and
perform with other talented musicians of a similar age and calibre, which
resonated with a longstanding project of mine: creating intermediate to advanced
level chamber music for young people to both gain experience from, and enjoy
playing.
Now You Can Believe was conceived as a juxtaposition of melodic tableaux - similar
to the end credits of a film. Based on the repetition and development of both a
minor 3rd in the brass, and 4th in the woodwind, the piece starts as a question
mark and grows to a triumphant affirmative finale to show off the beauty, tone and
range of this wonderfully unique ensemble:Who needs strings! My hope is that the
members of this year’s NYCB can have as much fun playing this piece as I did
writing it. I wish each and every single one of them the best in their musical
endeavours beyond this week.
