I love chisels. my favorite multi tool is the spirit X because it has the chisel. Such a useful tool.

Like you, I don't like my old, restored chisels to look new, but I do like them to look well cared for. I'd picked a Mayhew chisel for a good price, in is it on some America Elm, which was harder than some Hickory, I noticed the cutting edge had chipped. Dressed it back to a clean edge and when I used it the next time on another hardwood, I saw another slight chip. My edge was about a 27 degree so I knew it wasn't too thin at the edge. I guessed that the steel was left too hard from the hardening quench and not tempered long enough after the hardening. I gave it a couple of one hour cycles at 400F, it worked.

Great tip. I must look into that as I do have some that are inclined to do that also. thanks

I have been collecting chisels and am now in the process of getting a good usable edge. Will invest in some diamond plates... Collecting is a bad habit... Don't ask me about my hammer Collection(Fetish)...... Bob (Weston super Mare)
