I've been a fan of the good Commander forever and ever. One of my first albums was the original Live From Deep In The Heart of Texas show. I got Andy Stein to play my wedding, somehow. I got to see Commander Cody a couple of times and was lucky enough to catch him with Peter Walsh, who is a hoot and a half himself. (It was all so long ago, but I won't ever forget their version of "Rockin' Over China" with him at the mic.) It's great to see originals like John Tichy (I had not idea that beautiful voice on "Cryin' Time" was his), and the great Lance Dickerson on drums. (Former Cody bassist Buffalo Bruce Barlow said of Dickerson, "Lance was a great intuitive musician. He had more chops than a hog farm. He had a wealth of musical styles and could swing like a banshee.") I never got to see Tex Burbank but I sure wish I had!

I was at Reading in August 1973 and they came in straight from Heathrow airport. The set was very similar to the live album recorded in September and I clearly remember Little Billy C. asked the audience: "Do we have any truck drivers here tonight?" They were great and the good news is (or was) that Bill Kirchen comes over regularly.

I'm a generation younger than these dudes & most of their fans. My pops turned me onto a lot of this stuff as a kid from his record collection: Commander Cody, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Marcia Ball, Shake Russell & Dana Cooper, Bob Wills & Texas Playboys, Fabulous Tbirds etc.
I was actually at this show @ Town Lake as an 18 yr old with my pops & my best friend! Great day of music!
I got to see them at Antones a couple years later, too.
I'm originally from San Marcos, got to see Stevie Ray Vaughan play one of my dad's buddy's bday party on the SM river. George Strait was a local back then too.
These past 30 years i've been a Texas metal musician playing death metal, thrash, hardcore etc. still at it!
    Long live Texas music!

Same here man! My pops turned me on to this stuff! Good to know there’s other young fellas with a good ear. The Commander, the New Riders, Poco, and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils are some of my favorites. Good to see some video footage of these guys. Not enough of it on TH-cam.

Man I saw them , at a holiday inn , in south central pa. Back in the early 90’s , they had a crazy guitar player he played just the guy with the long hair. But he had a strat , and a les Paul , he was just nuts , the fender had some electrical probs so , he just switched mid song to the les Paul , played a few chords and broke a string , and played a few songs with 5 strings , didn’t miss a lick , there was a potted plant in a hanger right within his reach , and he head butted a few times till it came down . I had never really heard of the much back in the day , except for hot rod Lincoln . But to see them in that small corner , no stage , But I will say they were great , that guy with the longer hair , just played shit outta that Gibson , and he was good playing with a broke sting , they didn’t seem to be anymore than 5 members...as I remember , but they was well seasoned , great band , and l was happy to see them !

Well the bass player was excellent, the Commander's piano excellent as well, but everything else was absolute crap. Felt like these lightweights took over his band. Lots of guitars, one with fast rock riffs with no originality subbing for a pedal steel, gimme a break man, lots of singers, but no real music & not enough Commander Cody. Love the bass player, congrats to him great performance holding everybody else up.
