  • Denver Colorado's Official Song by Mike Crowley and KBTV (now KUSA) channel 9.\
The song was originally written as the Official song of Denver Colorado by Mike Crowley. It was commissioned in 1973 by Combined Communications Corporation which at that time was the parent company of KBTV channel 9 in Denver (now KUSA) who wanted a song that would express the stations pride in the city that it serves. Michael Crolwey, a former member of the Backporch Majority and a devoted Coloradan, composed both the words and the music. These were then combined with film for a brief tribute to the Denver which had been shown continuously on Channel 9 with great audience acceptance. In this recording Crowley sings all of the parts and plays all of the instruments. Mister Crowley and Channel 9 gave the performance to the City and County of Denver. The official 45rpm records of the song were distributed by Safeway stores of Colorado with the proceeds of the record sales being donated to the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. In July of 1976 at the suggestion of Mayor William H. McNichols, the City Council proposed and adopted a resolution making the song the Official song of Denver Colorado. Micheal Crowly also recorded a second song in 1973 during this project, also for the City and County of Denver, that song is called "City On the Prairie". Links to both songs are below:

This is not the original video that went along with this song, I threw this video together from a collection of photos. I haven't been able to find the actual, original film/video anywhere. I haven't seen it since it aired during commercial breaks on Channel 9 in the 1970's.
ALL the Music, Vocals and Instruments were Sung/Played by Michael Crowley, Former Member of the Back porch Majority.

I believe Mike and his group "Mom, Home and Apple Pie" recorded this song. We used to go see them perform at a nightclub in Littleton Colorado they were fantastic! I miss being able to go see Mike and Bob Turner perform they were the best!!

Promotional ad for KBTV in the mid to late 60s. This is when I first saw and heard it. "And growing with this city, communications Channel 9, Denver Colorado KBTV."

Then you tell me how I heard it in 1968? It was a promotional for KBTV in the late 60s. Different words. It was promoting the station. Perhaps the tune was taken and refined after that. I am 100% sure.

+Barry Sullins that's a good point. even though I was very young at the time, even I remember hearing the short versions with the various different lyrics to promote channel 9, I agree , it's possible the final full version is what became Denver's official song, there were also other versions used by other Gannett stations at the time as well, I do believe the Atlanta GA version is here on you tube as well.

I'm sure thats what happened. I remember KBTV using this in 1966-68. And I didn't hear it again until the late 70s. I was in my parents basement watching an old sci-fi flick about 11PM and they played this about every hour. I was 16-18 years old so I remember it.

I used to do commercials at Fred Arthur studios in Denver (where this was recorded) with Michael Crowley. He started in Kansas City in a band with Gene Clark (of the Byrds) then went into a nationally famous folk band called "The Back Porch Majority." Then he formed a band called "MC Squared" that did an album on Reprise in '68. Later on he toured extensively as a "first call" backup musician for John Denver.
Michael was an excellent guitarist, singer and songwriter, as good as any I've ever worked with. He passed away suddenly April 27, 2001 at the age of 58. RIP Michael, you were a very talented man.
Here is a clip from 1968 of Michael's band MC Squared performing on Hugh Hefner's show "Playboy After Dark"

In the video, Michael is center-stage, playing 12-string. The drummer is Jim Keltner, who later played with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and just about everybody else.

This was a promotion used by the Gannett-owned stations back in the 70s. WXIA in Atlanta used the song, TH-cam video code uK_2amcoQc0
