    the ceviche is too expensive. There are other good restautants you can get better ceviche for for a lower price, really!!

    • @carlosibarcena
      @carlosibarcena 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The price is from 3 dollars or more for one person in normal quality, prices like the video are for rich people or cheated people, that's the problem of Lima

    • @OrzelScene
      @OrzelScene 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Average price for ceviche is around 25 PEN minimum (8 USD) in Lima and other cities outside of Lima 18 PEN (6 USD) minimum. If people tell to buy "cheaper" just be careful, the fish could be in bad condition and the food is definitely bad (prepared with lack of hygiene) . I recommend to people that visit Peru must ask "pesca del día" (The fish of the day) because the fish that restaurant gonna prepare your ceviche is the season fish and also take care of our sea and environment (Ignore to people that say that "lenguado" is best fish for ceviche, they are assholes, finally is almost the same flavor).

    Thanks, guys! Your video from Lima brought back many memories. I spent there two months exactly twenty years ago. I lived in Miraflores, and Barranco, Larcomar and parque Kennedy were my hangouts. They really spruced the city up. The whole country was awakening from a decades long economic doldrum and urban terrorism. Some places like Larcomar were very nice already, but barranco was pretty beaten up, although both were hives of activity.
    Once again... Thanks for the memories!

      I'm Peruvian, loved to know you liked our capital city .... Good advices, be careful, but - apart from that - we are usually warm, hospitable people and love smiling talkative people, like you. Old Latin American downtowns are not exactly the same but will look similar to foreigners because they were built by the Spaniards, often Castilian and Andalusians. And Mexico and Peru are brotherly countries (Mexico is obviously richer than us) because we had the same mother - Spain - and our fathers were advanced ancient native civilizations: Aztecs & Mayan and Inkas.

    ENTRADAS:
    Causa (potato, lemon)
    Leche de tigre (similar to ceviche but it is more liquid)
    SEGUNDOS:
    Ceviche (fish)
    Lomo saltado (meat)
    Ají de gallina (Chicken)
    Pollo a la brasa (you only find it in pollerías)
    BEBIDAS:
    Chicha morada (purple corn)
    Pisco sour (pisco, lemon)

    A big part of the vocabulary differences between the different Latin American countries has to do with the original languages spoken in those regions before colonization. In Mexico the dominant language was Nahuatl and to a lesser extent in the south Mayan. So most words for foods, plants and animals endemic to the New World come from those languages in Mexico save for a few words that are really local and come from one of the lesser known local languages. In Peru the dominant language was Quechua if I'm not mistaken, so their words for some of the same things probably come from that language. The core Spanish is the same but eventually the differences really begin to standout. And that's not taking into account the regionalisms and popular sayings. A general rule of thumb is that as long as you stick to formal or proper textbook Spanish and avoid slang you should be fine.

    I've spent three months so far in Lima this year (2021), every shot in this video was my daily life. They even walked by my building. The Buenavista Cafe is two minutes from my apartment, I was there all the time. Amazing little place right on the cliffs with a 180º view of the ocean. Lima is great - many strange and interesting foods and drinks to try, people were very friendly and welcoming. Since it was in the middle of the pandemic, there were absolutely no tourists. Women are gorgeous. Everything is underpriced for Americans/Europeans, or downright cheap. I'll be going back soon. Who cares what I think, but this was fun to watch.

    When I travel with food allergies I google translate into the language of where I am going, print it and put it in a small plastic pouch that fits in my wallet to show to waiters wherever I eat. You can also order like small business type cards to give away to waiters each time. Another option are these cute thin bangle bracelets inscribed with your allergies. We traveled extensively throughout Europe last year for a month and now I'm wishing I would have used those and it would be a nice keepsake of our travels. I also have allergies to latex and antibiotics along with wheat and had no issues throughout our trip. The bracelets come in silver, copper, gold, bronze, etc. so collectively they are pretty.

    • @TangerineTravels
      @TangerineTravels  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those bracelets sound really handy! To be honest, we didn't think much about translating my allergies since Spanish is the main language in Peru and we know how to say all of those things in Spanish. It caught us off guard that food names in Peru would be so different. All part of the adventure though, right? :)

    Peruvian American here, but I had never had Peruvian food until I went there about a month after you guys. It looks like you guys started out bicycling in my uncle's neighborhood, not far from the house my father grew up in. I also found much of the food underwhelming until I managed to break away from the people I was traveling with and find some restaurants well away from malls or tourists. 8:26 - bridge of sighs. Down on the bottom right of the screen is a heart shape cutout of a face. I am trying to remember if I have this right, but that's a shop of a famous artist. Good place to go into and learn about a lot of the history for the murals in this neighborhood.

    My daughter has been in Lima for two weeks now. She went to a dozen museums. The Metropolitan, and Art museum have 3D displays. The catacombs are also cool. She also went to the Grand National Theater of Lima to see the national ballet. Oh, she went paragliding by the Park of Love. Now, she is resting before going to Cusco, and Machu Picchu to see the Inti Raymi festivities. ... Sadly, she didn't have time to go to the Ballestas islands (AKA poor-man's Galapagos). .. And yes, she complained about traffic.

    Nice video. I really enjoyed it. The cities in Latin America were built and organized according to the Castilian model (Spain). The streets were laid out according to a perpendicular layout and in the center stood the Plaza de Armas or Plaza Mayor, which consisted of an open space where urban life developed and social, official and religious activities were manifested. On its sides were the administrative or official buildings and the Cathedral or church of the town. That is why you will find a lot of similarities in all colonial cities in Latin America (big plazas, big churches, big buildings, incredible architecture). Actually the architecture is very similar to any city in the south of Spain (Seville, for example). The good thing about all these colonial cities in Latin America is that they have been preserved and mantained throughout the years. Greetings from Barcelona, Spain.

      Yeah, despite our typical earthquakes, which proves Spanish Builders of the time were very good. Short time ago a modern XXIst century bridge collapsed just behind Lima old downtown, and the official explanation blamed it to the river so high because of the heavy rains , that due to El Niño phenomenon the awful floods carried on so many rocks damaging the structure , blablabla 🙄🙄 .... Nevertheless, the old Stone Bridge, built in the XVIIth century, resisted all right (and of course has resisted El Niño and earthquakes for so many centuries, and when cars, busses and trucks were invented, stood all right all this massive traffic over it).

    Thanks for sharing your trip to Lima, Peru. I love seeing and hearing about the food! About the driving...I felt the way you did about the drivers in France. When I came back from my France trip, I was afraid to step off the curb in Missoula, MT when a car was near. But then a few years later, I taught in Venezuela and had a car (they offered interest free car loans at my school) and it was definitely an adventure driving. I remember one of the local teachers from my school zooming past me on the right on the way to school one morning. I didn't see many traffic accidents, surprisingly enough. When I returned to the states after my two years driving in Venezuela, I found the driving rather dull and boring. Great video!
