Ping pong players are some of the fittest, most physically gifted athletes in the World. To play doubles, mixed doubles, and singles like some of them do and play at this high a level at the end is mind boggling.

Ma Long has the best ability to control and outplay his opponents with top consistency. That's his greatest asset over the years (imagine now 34 & still at the very top). FZD, after many years, has now advanced enough to edge him out. His BH is the most powerful in the world so playing fast & deep left then right is invincible. He'll stay #1 for a very loooong time. FZD forced Ma Long to play backhand game with him and Ma could not escape FZD's strategy the entire game. So this is a true win for FZD because he totally controlled Ma Long's game even Ma Long showed his peak status and had tried his best to escape from FZD's strategy. I bet that's why FZD smiled so good at the end as he knew Ma Long would have no chance going forward as long as Ma's backhand couldn't exceed his. Ma Long did improve his backhand a lot in the past year or two. However, FZD's backhand's progress is still faster than Ma Long's.
Fan has grown so much this win was very important for him MA was definately on a high following previous matches, for me normally it could go either way but fan had to win thay first 2 sets MA also adaps but some how fan knows him to well you can clearly see all the variations he used you can't be MA long when his rythym is there and you don't have variation he will adapt and over power you fan played brilliant also proving that his capable of changing the variation which is a good sign of maturity and to cut the cake off his confident when he decides to do something his so confident in changing this takes so much training and fan has shown all his, qualities today his style of plays is dominant and consistent big ups to both players you have to love table tennis at its best no one would want to Mis a fan and MA final ❤️🏓🏃🏃🏃🏃
this is true. also notice how ma changed the placement of the ball with his backhand in the other match they played in china, but here he kept it long and deep at fans backhand. i feel like that was a key factor for beating fan but he didn't do it. anyone knows why?
On 8:48 you can see Fan's hands/arms just slightly trembling as he's about to serve, his passion must be taking the form of adrenaline and is just coursing throughout his entire body. I love seeing players like this haha
Game 4 was the critical one: the dragon was leading 3:0 but couldn't expand the gap; then at 9:9, FZD hit an edge ball, followed by a fancy bankhand down the line. 2:2 and 1:3 are day and night different. Anyway, beating the dragon requies 0 blinking, hesitation and self-doubt time.
There is another small but important factor here: Fan recently changed his racket and now got used to it. If the racket gives him 5% boost of power and controllability, that's a huge at this level.

Ma Long used a different tactic than Trials and have lost the game (In Trials, Ma Long played more on the opponent centre of table but today forgotten that) . His backhand is better now, but FZD's backhand is much better especially down the line where Ma Long lost a lot of points (the same with Calderano). Ma Long is also older 34 vs 26 years but I think he is the longest serving player in China as high level of playing.
