Actually, as a Lucy fan I was really proud of her because even if she lost she still had good fights and in my opinions these two fights (Flare and Minerva) really build her character a lot stronger

Yeah, it kinda makes me wish they changed the art style a bit sooner considering it wasn't until after the art style change that we saw Fairy Tail characters bleed and *SPOILERS!!!* It could've been a bit more intense having this as the first battle where a Fairy Tail character bleeds instead of Kagura and Millianna.
Fairy Tail really needs a dragon ball z kai reboot and a night air time so they could do it like the Manga without censorship. but it´s a dream at this point

When Fairy Tail was released years ago, the animation stopped halfway through the arc. I think it was because the anime got too close to the manga, and they wanted to give more room for the manga to develop. Then they have a new animation style for the second half of the arc.
I feel that Mashima is always so mean to Lucy T_T Her past, dealing with Loke and Taurus all the time, getting beaten up, her rent lol, and some people also see her as a damsel in distress type character when in fact her personality is the opposite, and she saves her guildmates a lot and keeps Natsu under control.
What most people don't realize during The Naval Battle is that it was never about winning, *it was about Minerva trying to break Lucy's spirit.* If Minerva wanted to win, she could've just attacked head on and been done with the battle. She wanted to break her spirit, but Lucy didn't back down and her spirit didn't break, so in that sense, *she won.*

I am fan of Lucy and I was not mad about the writting. Minerva is just a level over Lucy and was natural for her to defeat Lucy. And also we can see how awful and wicked she is, so that makes a good antagonist.
I also think like you, all the characters in Fairy Tail fight with their lives for the guild For example, when Elfman was beaten miserably by Bacchus in the previous round, no one said anything, but when Lucy was beaten, they said the writer hates her lol..

So the 5 minute timer activated when there are two people left. During those 5 minutes if someone leaves the bubble they get last place. So when the timer was up that meant that the fight was still on but the person who exited the bubble would just get 2nd place.

Before episode 171: Gosh, I really hate Raven Tail! Thank goodness Laxus beat them all and they got disqualified. After episode 171: Gosh, I really hate Minerva! She's worse than Raven Tail.
The timer in the water battle was about the special rule you might have missed. It wasn´t about ending the battle, it was about: If two combatants are left the one who loses within 3 (or was it 5?) minutes get´s last place instead of second. If the time is up the battle continues normal. Minerva who had total control over the fight could have Lucy getting 0 points in no time but instead had a litte "fun" with her.
A lot of people have complained that Lucy can't catch a break. Though I agree with the idea that Lucy won by never letting Minerva break her spirit, I have to agree it's frustrating. Really hope they adapt 100 Years Quest soon. Lucy recently got a pretty satisfying win in that series.
