All positive vibes here ! This is just the way to get young people into guitar playing ! Show them they don.t need a 2000 Pound/euro/dollar equipment to sound great. These kind of video's with your guitar skills making me smile and happy !
Back when I started in '91, I had a $75 Mako Traditionals TX-2 guitar (cheap Explorer copy) with a cracked neck. But, it worked. So, I didn't care. I remember my father told me it was originally set at $150. But, he was able to talk the shop dude down due to the neck. I borrowed a Fender Squire 15 amp from a one of my mom's friends. Then....I broke it when I dropped it taking it down from a closet shelf. The irony is that I kept it up there so that my little brother wouldn't be able to get to it and screw it up. I got a Crate G40XL amplifier on Christmas of '91.
After an absolutely awful day this video was the one thing that turned me around. Probably the only thing that could. Never underestimate the positive power you possess Mr Dave, it’s truly awesome. That rig… In your hands, just wow! Such amazing tones and gorgeous looks. I bought a JS300 because of your video, I’m now going to see if I can find one of those!
It is the contrast of the bright bridge pickup and the darker neck pickup which makes the middle position so good. With a 4 way switch, both pickups in series gives a killer lead sound. A brighter neck pickup would not give that full frequency in combination with the bright (maybe too bright ?) bridge pickup.
Also i have a solution for the dull Tele neck pickup sound , take the metal lipstick cover off it and that should let the Pickups true character shine through ?
I got the Jet JT-350 sunburst Tele last Christmas from Merchant city in Glasgow. I've got seven guitars but I just can't stop picking this one up now. Incredible quality for not much money! I'm after one of their Strat- style guitars bel to replace my US Strat now 🙂
God how times have changed, I got my first guitar in 1986 and it cost more than you payed for both bits of kit and it was rubbish, so yes today it really a good time to be a beginner. Along with free lessons over YT, what more do you need. Nice one Dave for promoting the guitar to first timers.
I had a Cort P-Bass in the 70s. I don't know what it cost but I remember mostly that I did not feel well served. Kids nowadays are fortunate in that one thing, I reckon that they have Computer Numerical Control of the Parts Manufacture.
Thank you as always Dave. You have not only inspired me to pick up one of my guitars today but you've put a smile on my face as I deal with all the gloom and doom this day has brought forth. And it's also my wedding anniversary go figure. Thank you Sir!
My wonderful shiny and beautiful Jet JT300 arrived today. Wonderful guitar. People of the tube, Mr Dave is the man to listen to when it comes to advice. Then again, you already knew that!
Loved Dave's smile at 3:55. He nailed that nice chord progression! That intro was beautiful!! Great demo that shows that someone doesn't have to spend a fortune to start out. Really cool of Dave to show people what can be done for very little. 🤘😎
I've been playing through a Kustom KGA amp for 20 years. It's the predecessor of the DFX 65. Both are equipped with Celestions. Incredible bang for your buck IMO. Tube-like warmth and a clean channel that as good as any. Inspirational playing Dave. Loved it!
After consulting with the pillow and re-visioning your video, I found the blonde version for 143€ online and ordered last night, a real bargain.. thanks for the nice videos Dave!! 🤘🏽
Story Dave, thats a JT300,I bought a blue one after seeing your vid on your JS300,I didn't want another strat so a tele was the perfect option, I got it in December & haven't been able to put it down since🤦♂️🤣
Simply LOVELY! It’s in the fingers and not the wood. I’m real happy to see you’re still er..”Dave.” I’ve not checked in on you for a few years. Best wishes from Glasgow, you utter moon-unit. 🏴
A cool mod I've found is to rewire the Tele, so the tone control does not affect the neck pickup. It makes quite a difference, but the the Tele neck pickup design is the reason for it's dull sound. The metal cover kills lots of highs.
I think a lot of (cheap oem) pickups make the additional mistakes of overwinding and strong ceramic magnets making an extra mumbly pickup. For these single coils that are otherwise really hard to screw up and modern amps and effects that really don't need the signal to be any hotter, it's a really odd persistent trend.
42:36 ... i thought why is the music stopped.. then i looked on my phone . And i forget i was watching your video.. i was listling and scrolling on the otger phone 🤣
Dave I'd like to thank you for all your knowledge and all the laughs!!! Most of all thanks for your Extraordinary Soul that you know how to reveal in your other worldly musical ability!!! Tons of Love from Philadelphia!!!!
Dave, can I just say, that was was one of your best videos, everything lined up perfectly the guitar, the amp and your talent you were on fire mate. Well done Dave………..think I’ll watch it again for the 5th time!
Amazing playing again Dave and another great review!! Always honest… Hope you can make it over to Ireland in the near future for some gigs.. you will be very welcomed here👍
Damn Dave that was beautiful. Sometimes when I hear your intro jam's I can't believe you don't know any music theory. I'm not sure, but I remember you saying we just need pentatonic scales, like I would love to know which other concepts you've used to reach that LEVEL with your playing, chordwise and stuff. Great video! This proves that you don't need super expensive gear to really sound good.
@@thedavesimpson Yeah that video is simply amazing. Thank you for that one, that was the video that made me learn the pentatonic scales, but you know, I am now looking for more to learn, I think you may know something else apart from pentatonics
It's incredible how while exploring the sounds of the effects you only need to play a couple of notes to suddenly be inspired to improvise in a particular genre. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 As someone brought up on my Dad's Country & Bluegrass collection, I especially loved your "country" improv. That really showed off this "cheap" Guitar/Amp Combo as the perfect first tools for a beginner in that genre. But then you go on to show just how versatile the instrument is as you dive off into other worlds. The bluesy improvs were my second favourite part of the video. I saw the American Blues Legends Tour in Liverpool in 1973 and the early sections of those improvs really reminded me of that. Before you went off into more Zeppelin Territory.
Hi Dave man. I had to laugh cos you look like your posting from a guitar shop with the background view goin on!!! BRILLIANT playing on the intro jam & throughout.. Your playing aside, it’s a joy to see you so happy. 💐🙏🏻🎸🎶❤️
Hello, Dave! Budget-friendly instruments usually have this common issue that their quality deteriorate in time after the launch. For instance, it's more or less what happened with Vintage guitars (you acknowledged this is some of your videos). New brands come to the market spec'd and made quite nicely but priced very aggressively in order to push sales. As time goes by there are only two options - 1. If the brand manages to get really established then they start putting prices higher ahead of inflation; 2. If there is no potential to really up price then they start to cut costs wherever they can (labour, parts, processes, quality control) and the quality goes down. Look at Fender and Gibson - for the last 10-15 years all their instruments across all the lines got a lot more expensive (including Squier and Epiphone). I remember not really so long ago when Mexican Fenders were about half the price compared to current production instruments. Lesser brands do not always have this possibility. As for this actual instrument, the question I have is why it is usually considered beneficial to have this ashtray bridge? I don't see a point in that unless that bridge actually has a cover as it used to be with vintage Fenders. "Flat bridge" (at least for me) seems more ergonomic. Another question - can this guitar be easily intonated considering the fact that the bridge has 3 saddles? From your video I cannot quite see if the saddles are somehow compensated or not.
Easily intonated? No it’s a 3 saddle bridge, but if everything was placed correctly it’s certainly possible to intonate the guitar, just not as easy as a six saddle bridge.
Fantastic Dave, I have a Kustom Contender from years ago as a little practice amp. Its 18 watts solid state with a 12ax7 preamp. Its actually amazing for the size. Great video as usual and always great to see your enthusiasm.
Dimarzio Twang King will give you a brighter neck tone. Some players also take the silver cover off. The darker neck does mix well with the bridge in the middle position though.
I've found with the Telecaster neck pickups that I've actually had to re-pot for a microphonic pickup, how clear, brighter or sharper it is or isn't, was more a matter of wax potting inside that steel cover. I imagine that no 2 neck pickups are potted identically. I get there should be some microphonic properrties to a pickup that is less than a squealer at higher volumes. The pickup height also affects that tone as darker. I tend to stay with thinner plectrums to brighten the tone. Thicker picks can color the tone darker. It is amazing you can find pretty solid gear for affordable. The guy that sold that guitar probably hated it being a toploader Tele, "cheap Chinese piece of junk" is a phrase that I hear too often. It's not the guitar, it's the player & a set up. I went with a pair of Monoprice Telecasters. Not sure which I prefer, the Buttercream or the 3TSB. I kept both because they sound different enough and priced below what the Jet Tele priced at for both. Oddly enough you also ended up with a pale yellow Buttercream blonde & a 3TSB Telecaster too, right down to the blackguard & the whiteguard. I was torn between which I wanted, but the buttercream was such a decent instrument, when the 3TSB went on sale I didn't hesitate to buy it.
I'm a beginner looking for my first Telecaster and recently watched your review of the gearformusic relic model that you loved but you wouldn't recommend for beginners and I remember you saying that the neck Jet was much better for new players .I wasn't keen on the colours of the 300 so ended up buying a JT350 in black .Cant wait to get my hands on it lol ,The other day I picked up a Fender champion 20 for 60 quid that sounds good to me .If my 350 sounds as good as your 300 I'll be very happy
Would love to get one of these Jet guitars but I’m now 46 and haven’t picked up a guitar since I was a teenager. Not sure I could learn to play again at my age but at these prices it would just be so fun to try.
Do you think the Tele style would be the better option over the Strat style for me, as a relative beginner? I doubt I would ever use the trem on a Strat and I’m guessing the Tele would be more stable in terms of tuning.
The Primordial Ooze from which my tone evolved was the Lehle P-Split. Take two, three, or four of those teenchy amp simulators and daisy-chain them together, perhaps using something that functions as a panning tremolo like the Boss PN-2 or a stereo chorus like the Boss CE-3. Or both. I was able to get a remarkable simulation of tone from various versions of this. I don't know what the neighbourhood is hearing, but the image of what they were thinking was extremely beneficial to my dexterity and precision after I substituted in a half-dozen 120+ Watt real actual Amplifiers to the rig. Better than forty years of practice.
I have an insane urge for another Tele but need to concentrate on rebuilding my health. Watching you play one is a really good substitute and it sounds lovely. At £150 it is an absolute bargain . That roasted maple neck is drop dead gorgeous.
Dave, thanks for this. I've shared it with a mate who is thinking of getting into playing. Brilliant playing as usual and I love the fact you are not a gear snob. You're a legend my friend :-0)
Harley benton Tele with a fender frontman is another nice option for beginners, the guitar plays great especially for £80_90 n the amps a good bedroom setup under £100.Cool video for the new players. Keep em coming pal
The JT300 you have has ceramic pups, the JT350 I have coming has the Alnicos. I'll check out the neck pup and see if it's got this dark character that the ceramic pups have.
Hi Dave, My G&L ASAT Classic, budget made in Asia for G&L Tele thin line (has a f hole in the body) does not have this dark neck pickup issue. I do notice hat the pickup sits high and is not adjustable unless I remove the scratch plate. There is no cover on the pickup, it's open. The pickups I was told are the same as the made in USA guitars. This one is about 15 years old.
If most brands have mellowed down their Telecaster neck pick ups, my guess is that it is to make the guitars more "universal", i.e. more generic electric guitary and less pure Telecastery in order to appeal to those folks who can't have a bunch of different guitars for different purposes.
That is another great honest review and demo Dave really enjoyed the playing and your comments on the rig. Shows that people dont need to beat themselves up about not having or being able to afford the main brands. I did try out an old Kustom twin amp and really wish I had bought it as the tone on it was incredible for what was viewed as a cheapo make!
I used to deliberately look out for Kustom amp s second hand. They don't hold their value like the big three. I was so impressed with a little 15 watt solid state Kustom that i spent 'real' money on a new Kustom 12A tube. Wish i still had it. One of their defender tube heads might be bought soon! IMHO Kustom amps are consistently good. They were good enough for Creedence.
Wow what a good sound that amp made! You can easily see how much it inspired you! It made you play all the genres of guitar music that exist haha! Speaking of dark tele neck pickups, the secret is - very bright bridge plus dark neck pickup give a wonderful middle position! It gives best of both worlds :) plus you have a variety to cover all genres, from jazz to metal. This is the beauty of a Tele! You can always try to put a Strat pickup in neck position, I did it once and it sounded wicked! But then I got a Strat and that pickup went to that guitar :)
You make me depressed, if I made something from a broom handle cardboard box and a couple of pieces of string, you'd make it sound good. Love watching your clips.
There's so many Beautiful Guitars in the world... I'm a One Type Move on... I'd let a Tele go if I find a better one... 72 Tele Deluxe... my Tele of choice
The two pickups with the hall reverb gave me a If jimi hendrix and Red hot chilli peppers had a baby you would get that lol. Love it. I need a new amp, my fender 15g has some earthing issues i think, and it's a great little amp, so i could get it fixed but if the cost is greater than getting a slightly smaller one with built in effects then great, but it is my first amp i got so don't really want to get rid, so rather fix it, then maybe get a new one. It hums real bad but sometimes it won't, so not sure if it's a thing that i could fix myself.
kinda diggin their 500, 600 and 800 series guitars even that 500 is sorta chravelish.. it's all about the frets for me, are they good, hemi ends, yup spoit now.. where are these made? really dig that JS- 500.. seriously? wut da fook? those are nice, the faux binding, I like it, for $299 quid? man, I honestly think that's a real binding a blond tortoise cellulose?.. ballin... mikey WANTS a red one, in usa... how?
On this side of Atlantic (US) the Slick guitars are a good option. Before pandemic there were bargain amps and speakers at Guitar center used but now less so but getting better. You might think about writing a beginner course to sell online. Big Fan -- thanks for the entertainment.

You. are. a. wizard. If "Tone is in the fingers" ever needed proving, this does that. Wow.
I bought a Jet strat after your last video and I love it too. One of my favourite guitars, it's the HSS . I will try and find a tele for sure 👍

The reverb on that amp is peachy!

Do you think the Tele style would be the better option over the Strat style for me, as a relative beginner? I doubt I would ever use the trem on a Strat and I’m guessing the Tele would be more stable in terms of tuning.
Sounds quite good. Guitar and amp. Loved your dynamics as well.
Thank you very much. :)
One of my fav guitarists… 👍🏻
Thank you very much. :)
Bravo 👍
Szuper gitár!!!!
Super play
Great video great Tones, Love the Budget Blues :D
Thank you very much. :)
Have a look into Harley Benton guitars, also some roasted maple options and pretty great quality for the same price range!
I have an insane urge for another Tele but need to concentrate on rebuilding my health. Watching you play one is a really good substitute and it sounds lovely. At £150 it is an absolute bargain . That roasted maple neck is drop dead gorgeous.
Your health is definitely more important Mr John. I hope you get another tele one day though. :)
New guitar will make you feel happy which in turn helps your health in general. Win win if you ask me !
The Tele's will be around when you're ready :)
Dave, thanks for this. I've shared it with a mate who is thinking of getting into playing. Brilliant playing as usual and I love the fact you are not a gear snob. You're a legend my friend :-0)
Thank you very much. :)
Your sound and playing!!!! Jeez
Harley benton Tele with a fender frontman is another nice option for beginners, the guitar plays great especially for £80_90 n the amps a good bedroom setup under £100.Cool video for the new players. Keep em coming pal
Thank you very much. :)
It was amazing! Could you tell me which amp model was on the recording?
I wouldn’t worry about speaking properly when your fingers are doing plenty of talking. Can’t believe that sound from this setup, properly lovely!
Thank you very much. :)
You already earned the like by the time you said ‘I am Alex Lifeson’-shame I can’t hit like again just for that, haha!
Thank you very much. :)
The JT300 you have has ceramic pups, the JT350 I have coming has the Alnicos. I'll check out the neck pup and see if it's got this dark character that the ceramic pups have.
That was cool.👍 I wish you could get a jet in the US. That Kustom amp sounds killer for the price.
Thank you very much and I'm sure they'll get over there soon. :)
That is a great Guitar, gotta love a Tele. And that looks stunning for the money.
afternoon Dave and your other half,
Afternoon to you too. :)
Thank you very much. :)
Thank you very much for watching. :)
You make me depressed, if I made something from a broom handle cardboard box and a couple of pieces of string, you'd make it sound good. Love watching your clips.
Dave Leo originally
used the neck pick up
as a bass guitar.
as no electric bass guitar
existed at the time...¹
maybe the reason...
REF pickup sound..
What epic sounds for £200! Only in your hands though Dave. I bet that Kustom would make a mean little recording amp
Indoodles. :)
There's so many Beautiful Guitars in the world... I'm a One Type Move on... I'd let a Tele go if I find a better one... 72 Tele Deluxe... my Tele of choice
It's like watching Michelangelo paint a masterpiece with a frayed toothpick for a brush.
Thank you very much. :)
It hums real bad but sometimes it won't, so not sure if it's a thing that i could fix myself.
kinda diggin their 500, 600 and 800 series guitars even that 500 is sorta chravelish.. it's all about the frets for me, are they good, hemi ends, yup spoit now.. where are these made?
really dig that JS- 500.. seriously? wut da fook? those are nice, the faux binding, I like it, for $299 quid? man, I honestly think that's a real binding a blond tortoise cellulose?.. ballin... mikey WANTS a red one, in usa... how?
nice playing sir :) I have an older version of that amp, no FX, but hey, it was free, and not a bad little solid state amp. keep on rockin'!
Thank you very much and you too. :)
I think I'd add a Sweet Cream pedal from Tone City to that clean channel with just a touch of gain.
Holy hopping shoestring, Batman! That is a sweet set up.
Thank you very much. :)
On this side of Atlantic (US) the Slick guitars are a good option. Before pandemic there were bargain amps and speakers at Guitar center used but now less so but getting better. You might think about writing a beginner course to sell online. Big Fan -- thanks for the entertainment.
Thank you very much. :)
