Costume Jewelry Sets - Collections Management

  • I have had many requests to show more of my vintage collection, and today were going through my vintage costume jewelry sets and matching pieces!
    Like most of my vintage collection, most of these (I'd say 85% ish) were found on Etsy, and I usually don't like to pay too much for things. For vintage costume jewelry, I don't like to pay more than $50 dollars for anything unless it is a full set or truly spectacular. Most of the time I spend around $25 dollars on an earrings and necklace set or around that.
    I'm filming a Q&A this week, got any questions for me? Leave them in the comments below!

      Do you find people get your vintage vibe, or do you have to explain things? When I wear vintage at work (clinic) people sometimes say nothing then some come up later and say they wish people dressed up more. Never sure if it's liked or thought to be too different.

    Good heavens, don't worry about your jewelry and your eye shadow not matching -- you look fabulous! The makeup, the hair, the jewelry, the dress... people just don't make that kind of effort anymore. You shouldn't be posting videos tonight, you should be out painting the town red and elevating the class of any establishment you grace with your presence.

    This was excellent! I think is fascinating to see the Avon pieces from the 60s-80s in a much earlier style. I feel like it verifies that they've been an "old lady" brand for quite a while. Obviously not only old ladies like the brand, but it makes sense that they catered to an older audience by creating things that were more stylish when the wearer was younger.

    Look at some Jackie Kennedy reproduction sets. They are made exactly like the original , even to being the exact weight as hers. Many people don’t know that much of her jewelry was costume. It was prohibitively expensive because it was one of a kind. They could never sell it to anyone else after Jackie bought it . The exception was with Coco Channel pieces. Hers were usually limited quantity, but were often made before Jackie came along.

    Lovely collection, I’m a new sub. Been binging on your videos. You mentioned in one that clip on earrings pinched. My Grandmother used to use stick on foam and felt pads that cushioned the clips that she probably bought at Woolworths. Something similar wouldn’t be hard to fashion by cutting some small circles of corn pads or sticky felt.

    I have my grandmother’s sets. The earrings are all clip.....can’t handle clip earrings😖! Have you ever turned any clip earrings into pierced? Would you suggest a jeweler to change them? Also, could you show us how you store your jewelry? My grandma just kept her sets in the boxes they came in.

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh indeed I have turned many many pairs of clip ons into post backs, but I just clip the backs off with jewelry wire cutters and glue on surgical steel post backs myself. Technically this is like...totally vintage blasphemy, but as I intent to be the custodian and wearer of these items for (hopefully) a very long time, I want to be able to wear and enjoy them. If I have a pair of really nice signed earrings or super rare ones I won't mutilate them like that, but if they are just cheapy base metal earrings the clip has to go. I show how I store my jewelry in this closet tour video here as well th-cam.com/video/Emq_2UmxVbM/w-d-xo.html That is super cool that you have the original boxes though!

    That is a fabulous collection.
    Question: How do you keep on track with building your collection of garments and jewelry without constantly overspending? I‘m assuming, that you live off a ‚normal‘ salary, since you mentioned working in apparel construction (also an interesting topic!) and can’t just buy whatever you want all the time. I have such a hard time to limit myself, especially when I start getting passionate about something. I actually slipped into a kind of ‚lazy minimalism‘ lately...but that does not make me happy, it seems. I have a hard time motivating myself, to make an effort at all now...and it shows 😏
    But I‘m worried I‘ll just want to buy all the pretty things all at once, if I venture into, not necessarily vintage, but a more deliberate style again.
    I mean, I know, I need to set a budget and make a list of priorities and all that...but if you have any additional tips on how to stay on track without overdoing it...🙂
    Also: do you have like a mental list of what you own in your head? I find myself constantly having to search through my stuff, trying to find anything that matches...and I‘m just talking tops and bottoms here. If I really try to also match shoes and belts and jewelry....it takes me forever to get ready. I‘m contemplating using an app to help with organization (also for my fabrics and sewing projects) but it’s an awful lot of work to set up, in the beginning. Not to mention, that I would need to be at home at noon on a sunny day, to even have sufficient daylight to take good pictures. And there isn’t one in sight on my weather app. Lol. I think, I have New Year‘s Blues!
    Oh well. It’s 11:30am...I guess, I should start the New Year with getting dressed at all maybe!

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Rara!
      Full disclosure: Unfortunately any time I spend any money at all on vintage or makeup, I shouldn't be. I do not live off a of a "normal" salary, I live at home with my parents. I do not have a full time salaried job. I work part time to pay my own bills (student loan stuff mostly, and heathcare, phone etc), and "waste" most of the rest of my money on vintage when I should be saving all of it. I am not very financially responsible, but vintage and glitter bring me joy so I have a hard time not collecting.
      I talk a little bit about my situation in my first Side Husselen video and in my 1st Q&A video too. I only work part time because I am working very hard on fiction writing and trying to become a published author, as that is my dream. Luckily for me it is one my parents support. As privileged and lucky as my situation is, I also feel an extreme amount of guilt over it, and my dream is to become financially independent ASAP but without having to sacrifice my creative goals. Not shopping at all would definitely help me in that endeavor, but I am weak.
      Luckily I can never truly overdo it shopping because I do not have credit cards. I can only spend what I have left after my bills, and because I work part time that isn't a ton. I do have a video about my vintage shopping strategy here on the channel as well. I also bargain hunt pretty hard core, I rarely if ever pay more than $50 dollars for anything vintage, and most of the time I try and spend around $10-$20 per item. This is only possible because I buy mostly accessories which are much cheaper than clothing.
      As for knowing what I have and styling things, I do feel I have a pretty good mental inventory, but I also spend dedicated time in my wardrobe making outfits and styling things together, playing around matching and pairing things and will hang "styled" outfits at the end of my closet rail to simply grab a whole outfit when I get ready next time.
      This answer became suuuper long. I guess I really just feel bad that my videos may make it seem like my shopping habits are sustainable, when in fact my situation is unique and very privileged, and I just want to acknowledge that. I do bargain hunt, but I am also just extremely lucky that I don't have to pay rent.

      Oh, I see! And thank you for being so open. I would imagine, that it is somewhat weird, to answer personal questions from complete strangers!
      And more power to you, achieving such a polished look with limited means! That’s much more admirable than someone just dumping hundreds of dollars on designer items, just to end up looking like every other ‚fashionista‘ on instagram.
      I actually wanted to become an author when was younger myself, but had to become financially independent very early, because my parents passed away. And somehow I never really go back into writing. Although there is that whole ‚if you really want to, you‘ll make it happen’ thingie, right? I‘m glad you get the chance to try and make your dream come true.
      I‘ve watched quite a few of your videos by now, btw, and I gotta say, you really put out great content consistently! Can’t for my life figure out, why your channel isn’t much bigger. I mean, I know it’s a niche topic, but still. But you definitely seem to have the self discipline and work ethic to be self employed. Looking forward to reading your book one day then 🙂
