Weathering refers to the breakdown or disintegration and decomposition of rocks in situ through Mechanical and chemical changes in the rocks effected by water , temperature, wind , gases , and/ or Organisms provided that there is no large scale transport of weathered material by process of denudation except mass movement of weathered material downslope under impact of gravity. (Savindra Singh) Modified after (Oliier, A.Holmes)
• Weathering products are the source materials of soils and sedimentary rocks; thus, weathering constitutes the first step in the chain of processes that produce sedimentary rocks.
• From a geomorphological perspective, rock weathering is extremely important.
1. Weathering processes prepare Earth materials for subsequent transportation by agents of erosion.
2. Weathering is an essential component of soil formation at the Earth’s surface.
3. weathering processes are directly responsible for land form and landscape evolution.
The process of Weathering tends to be self-reinforcing: weathering weakens the rocks and makes them more permeable, so rendering them more vulnerable to removal by agents of erosion, and the removal of weathered products exposes more rock to weathering.
