    As a Sandgroper we evolved in sand and have a bowl for breakfast. For beach driving I use 11 psi to 14 psi on my Nissan Navara D40 single cab tray back depending on the conditions on the day. All terrain tyres don't have a problem at those pressures considering you're not going fast. You won't risk rolling a bead unless you're well less than 10psi but obviously avoid hard sudden turns if you can.
    These fellows from Seek Adventure did a test of different pressures (BT50) by deliberately doing tight figure of 8's in the sand at Lancelin ... and they were using HT tyres with softer sidewalls. They started at 15 psi and didn't roll a bead until 6 psi.

      Sounds spot on Scott! I'll have to check out that video, I hadn't seen that one before. Something similar to something I've been planning for a while, but we'll use ATs. It'd be curious to see whether stiffer tyres roll off the bead more easily, too 🤔

    A lot of people end up testing street vs mud or at tires and they always say how street moves easier on the sand becuse it isn't trying to dig ( the lugs are meant to bite vs float) .. Maybe a cool test for u guys

    • @TyreReviewVideos
      @TyreReviewVideos  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi mate, With this one, many folks think that muddies are best for everything, so we wanted to demonstrate that they're not actually the optimum choice for sand, vs the other common choice of All Terrain. Off roaders are likely to be running either AT or MT, so best to run those as the examples. Still, I'll add that to our list of video options going forward 👍

    Is there a portable compressor you recommend? I need it to fill my tires after deflating for riding in the dunes... 20lbs x 4.

    • @TyreReviewVideos
      @TyreReviewVideos  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There's a bunch out there, and everyone has kinda different needs in terms of storage and the amount of time that you actually need it. Two things to keep an eye on is that the compressor has enough go to actually fill a larger tyre in a quick enough time, and the Duty Cycle, which is the amount of time a compressor can spend on, until it overheats and needs a break. It's best to choose a compressor that can do the volume you need without a break, as otherwise it takes significantly longer. I use a portable ARB compressor currently, which does a good job, but it's not quite as fast as their bigger one, which I'm thinking about building into the next vehicle. ~Jared

    • @TyreReviewVideos
      @TyreReviewVideos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting, we don't get the 2500's down here from factory, so I had to do a little looking up. I guess the key thing is that by deflating your tyres you're increasing the contact patch of your tyres. They probably list high tyre pressures to enable you to carry the heavy loads in the back (or tow), like the 2500 is intended for, but when you're on the sand you're probably not really loaded up. What I'd look for is how much wider the tyres are getting. From my online looksie, it seems that starting off with 20psi, which is the same we do with our smaller vehicles over here, is a good start, then decrease from there. I probably wouldn't go below 16psi for faster driving, but saw some references to folks driving vehicles like yours with 12 psi on soft sand. There's no real hard/fast rule to it, though, it depends on the terrain, the vehicle, the load and the driving. Cheers!

    • @TyreReviewVideos
      @TyreReviewVideos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Interestingly, driving in 4L on soft sand, which this surely was, puts a bunch less strain on the torque converter, which means less heat, which is better for the car. I also don't think it would have gotten up enough speed, nor had enough gears, in high range, as this was a really tight little spot.

  • @7150285
    @7150285 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm no expert I'm just using my common sense but wouldn't going too low like below 10 psi you are putting yourself at risk? Like risk of tires de-beading and coming off the rims?

    • @TyreReviewVideos
      @TyreReviewVideos  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Correct, that's why we didn't go too low with this test, but we'll do another soon that looks at the risks of debeading at low pressures in sand 👍

    What are y’all’s vehicles so under powdered r over there?

    • @TyreReviewVideos
      @TyreReviewVideos  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha, pretty much! Fuel is a bunch more expensive down here, so most new vehicles come with small 4cyl engines, particularly the utes (think Ranger and Tacoma type size). Regulations and restrictions means that folks are far less likely to change motors as well, as to have it legal on the road, it has to be engineered and also the engine has to be newer than the vehicle. It's all a bit lame, but we do what we can 👌

      That really depends on the sand and the driver. We're catering for the masses here, where they're better off starting in low then making their own choices. High range is good in some situations where the sand is harder, but low will help most people with modern, underpowered utes and wagons, to keep their revs up 👍
