Hi! Good question. When looking at the anion gap on the basic metabolic panel, it should reveal an acidosis also however it's not as always as specific as looking at your actual ABGs. A lot of providers will start looking at the BMP, and if there is a gap acidosis then they will pursue it further with more testing (ABG's, lactic acid etc). From the perspective of studying for the CEN exam, focus on the actual ABG's is more useful for the test.
