Excellent review like always. For anyone who wants this light don't expect to get your hands on it anytime soon. I put in an order for a 600D 4 months ago and still don't have a definite delivery date. I bought the Nanlux Evoke 1200 at the same time and received it a while ago. I like Aputure lights, but it takes them so long to stock anything. With the 1200D being the newest light in the lineup they will be very hard to find. There should be a standard for measuring the beam angle of a light(and reflectors), otherwise how can we objectively compare the relative outputs of lights. One manufacture suggests "only measure the light to the angle where the intensity falls below 50% of the initial intensity in the center of the beam" So mark the light where it falls off one stop. But measuring the light is a little more difficult than appears. If you point a light into a flat wall, the edges of the beam will be further away from the light than the center. A perfectly even 90 degree beam would have 1 stop loss at the edges, due to the inverse square law. So you would need to ensure that your meter readings all take place at equal distances from the light. So tie a string to the light and meter, or use a circular shaped background and put the light at the radius ...etc. For the trigonometric calculations, measure the distance between both sides where the light falls off one stop. Inverse Tan(half the distance between marked points/distance of light to wall). Then multiply the result by 2 to get the beam angle in degrees. I have done this for the Prolycht 300 FS and get a beam angle at 42 degrees

I would really press them on getting a fresnel and spotlight attachment optimized for this unit. It's the only thing keeping me from buying personally.
If you really need a spotlight with more output than the 600d you should look for other brands who have dedicated fixtures for that. Aputure wouldn’t focus on things like a spotlight for the 1200d because it wouldn’t be worth it since the market for that is way smaller. If you need a ton of daylight firepower in a spotlight then just go with a HMI one like RobertJuliat 1.2k. With smaller light fixtures they can make something that “does it all” but for big fixtures like this…. Would be a waste of time and resources they can put in development of other new fixtures.

Here's a question that might only expose my general ignorance about electrical wiring. The context is that I mostly film - both interviews and B-roll - on location. Hey Andrew, love your videos. A quick warning - I've seen it a couple of times in your vids before, be careful with what paperwork you show onscreen. When you're reading off the spectrum analysis your tax invoice (and quite possibly personal details) is pretty visible to anyone without a larger screen. I've seen shipping labels unblurred previously too, I think I commented at the time but I don't remember where exactly. Probably a good idea to make sure that stuff is blurred or masked in future. Thanks for all the amazing content!
...and in any case, if you are in Melbourne it's pretty obvious where Andrew lives... just follow the light beam from the sky to the source and you'll sure to end up at his garage. :)
May be once you could make video about flickering problem with different lights. I understand the reason of flickering with traditional light plugged to 50Hz AC. But you are talking many times about LEDs flickering. May be once you could tell more about this problem and why it's happening in different type of lights. )
How does the Evoke's actual beam angle at 26 degrees compare to he Aputure 30 degree dish? If the Aputure is actually spitting out closer to 45 degrees than that would help to account for the Evoke's much higher output. Also how well do the 1200d dishes work on the 600d?
The 1200 spot dish works good, but I didn't think to take numbers, the evoke dishes have almost no drop off on the beam edges. Their 45⁰ dish looks like a typical 30⁰ dish. But it is definitely 45⁰ of very even
Just bought it. Great light but does anyone know if there has been an update on when the F10 for the 1200D and 600C will be released? Nothing on Aputure's web site.
Love love your channel! You know so much about lights and gaffing in general. Is there any literature that you have read that gave you this knowledge? Or is it just experience?
Awesome review as usual! I would say the build quality of modern aputure lights is really great for the price point and would probably be the biggest factor for me when comparing it to the evoke 1200. There is a bit of an elephant in the room though… in the evoke review you mentioned it actually only draws 1000watt but it looks like the aputure can max out at around 1400watt. Given the brightness is so similar (depending on reflector configuration) the evoke might come in handy when you need a few of them running off household power because of the lower power draw?
not really, maybe you could fit 2 evokes on a 20A breaker but that would be pushing it and its not like in the feed into the house isn't big enough thats 100-200A of 240V.
Thanks for the replies. In Australia we are 240v so one evoke should be under 5amps at a 1000watt power draw. For other lower voltage regions, the general point I’m trying to make is still relevant, if you would like to add a lower powered light to supplement the Evoke. You have more leeway than with the aputure. That’s the crux of it - happy to be proven wrong if I’ve missed something here Cheers
@@cagf2013 here in120V outlet land we typically use 100-110V to allow a safety margin given stuff is rated to take 80% load continuously. meaning 15A gets down rated to 13A and 20A to 17A I use sticker ratings because efficiency of PSUs typically is lower at 120V vs 200-250V that means with a 1200D+300D we'd be on the limit for 15A but fine on 20A evoke 1200 + 300d 1550W, that far enough under 15A that I would be okay small houses have at least 10 15-20A beakers so it isn't a big deal for house sized shoot.
@@gdrriley420 gotchya, thanks for the reply. Interesting to have some more insight into that. I suppose as long as the single light is under the threshold for a single 15amp circuit you can always work around it by running some extra cables as needed. You would just need to be a bit more careful in the 100-120v regions as you mentioned. I am still a bit surprised that the Evoke competes so well with less power draw - it seems by sticking to a Bowen’s mount aputure had to make a few compromises (eg the built in mirror reflector surrounding the COB)
Thanks for the Amazing and very informative video i just have question about aputure spotlight mount set with 36 degree lens u try that lens or we can’t
@@gaffergear that’s interesting. Could you expand on that? I’ve always been curious about the reason behind the blue spike. Maybe it’s even worth a video.
Hey Andrew GREAT video as usual, would love have your thoughts on what this lights means in the future in the industry, does it mean m18 will soon be replaced by something like this? Cheers
In my large van I now only carry 2 M40s as my only HMIs. All my smaller HMI were replaced with 2x Evoke 1200s, 2x Aputure 600d with F10s, a 600x with F10, and 2 Forza 500s for my light weight rigs. The only HMIs left in my small van are M18s. As soon as I get a second one of these they will be removed. For me it's the ability to run wireless DMX dimming, no heat up times, and no lamp stock, that has forced the change over. I don't know if I'm brave enough to sell my M18s yet.
@@creativegreats6924 in my large van the decision was down to space, I fitted two kits with 45⁰ and 60⁰ dishes into a very small space. As I run everything off lumin radio in that van not having access to the controls (the biggest design flaw) isn't an issue. No way could I fit two 1200Ds In my small van I now have two Aputure 1200 kits. Because the guys running that van for me need to be able to access the controls to dim, because they don't run lumin radio. Most of the guys run Siduus link on their phones, and the light is easier to move around as I get the whole kit into one bag.
@@gaffergearwhen blasting thru a 8×8 the nanlux appears to possibly be the better light but only with that large frensel. Without the nanlux frensel ..aputure appears to be the better light
Thanks again Andrew- always the best review. I’m very curious about the reflectors and how they might work on the smaller LS lights. Have you had a chance to put them in the 600d and 300dII?
The big problem I see with this is the barn door situation. Black dish+ F10 barn doors seem to be the only available option. But with that output you might as well use a 600D/X. What are your thoughts on this?
I see these as a high powered LED alternative to an M18 through a window, bounced or through diffusion. It's raw firepower, not much good for anything else. That's why I still have 2x600D and 2x600x lights with F10s.
Grt review as always. Thx. Between Gaffer n Gear and Meet the gaffer....1st ports of call. Do you think you might keep some? Or to put another way I guess, what might you be selling?! Lastly do you feel there a case for keeping the Evoke as well as the Aputure?
I'm actually going two of each. Two evokes fit on a small shelf in my large van, the only space I had available. In my small van I'm going to go two of the Aputure because of the Bowen mount 150 parabolic soft box and because most of the crew running that ban for me use siduus link or run the lights manually, and the evokes controllers are on the head. If I could only have one or the other, it would be a super tough call
Your channel is amazing ! So much information. Unrelated question. I’m Looking to buy a portable electric generator to power Aputure 600D for studio use. Can you recommend one ? Or what specs should I be looking in that generator to power properly that specific light fixture ?
Hello Andrew, just watched this video for the second time. Fantastic!! I hope you don't mind if I asked you a question unrelated to the 1200. I mounted an Aputure 600D on a boom arm (not a superboom), I wanted to keep the light at 45 degrees with the new Aputure done 150. Of course, the weight makes it rotate and to end up facing down. Do you know any device or any trick to prevent a heavy fixture from rotating due to its own weight?

When you say you left it in the rain, do you mean it was pouring and the unit was in the midst of it all without any covers? Could it stay like that indefinitely?
I've had one of these out in rain that would be a 7/10 strength, but for only around 8 to 10 minutes of downpour. I've had a few days of light shower and I don't worry about them at all. Their is an operating limitation of (I think) 45⁰
Can any 1200D owners out there confirm if this light is reliable at all? I am considering buying one and I have read on several reviews that these lights are failing??? Thax in advance.
I have 4. Had them for about a year now. Bags don't hold up is the main issue. One kit had to have its head replaced, the other 3 have not had any issues.
It's been a while now and no one has stuck anything underrated on the lights. It seems people who want to hire these are smart enough to know what they are doing. The biggest problem with these has been the zips on the corner of the bags getting broken.

None of those shipping labels are to my address
@@gaffergear awesome, good to know, keep up the fantastic videos!
@@gaffergear Damn… I just sent a case of Scotch there.
...and in any case, if you are in Melbourne it's pretty obvious where Andrew lives... just follow the light beam from the sky to the source and you'll sure to end up at his garage. :)
LOVE your videos !!!!!
Thanks for that great review. What’s the largest reflector that fits into the rolling bag/case?
But it is definitely 45⁰ of very even
Thank you!
Hi, nice video. What is the correct way to use this light with a gel filter? (tha same cuestion with Aputure 600D )
We now use a 3x3 frame on a C-stand.
But you're still limited to one fixture per breaker (at least here in canada, 1800 watts on a 15A circuit) so might not make a huge difference.
not really, maybe you could fit 2 evokes on a 20A breaker but that would be pushing it
and its not like in the feed into the house isn't big enough thats 100-200A of 240V.
That’s the crux of it - happy to be proven wrong if I’ve missed something here
Cheers
@@cagf2013 here in120V outlet land we typically use 100-110V to allow a safety margin given stuff is rated to take 80% load continuously. meaning 15A gets down rated to 13A and 20A to 17A
I use sticker ratings because efficiency of PSUs typically is lower at 120V vs 200-250V
that means with a 1200D+300D we'd be on the limit for 15A but fine on 20A
evoke 1200 + 300d 1550W, that far enough under 15A that I would be okay
small houses have at least 10 15-20A beakers so it isn't a big deal for house sized shoot.
It would overheat on the 1200d
Im waiting for them to make a mark 2 that fixes the blue light channel in the LED chip like the anglefish has.
That may not happen, the trade off is longevity and power efficiency.
@@gaffergear why do you choose to carry the nanlux 1200 over the aputure 1200s pro ?
@@creativegreats6924 in my large van the decision was down to space, I fitted two kits with 45⁰ and 60⁰ dishes into a very small space. As I run everything off lumin radio in that van not having access to the controls (the biggest design flaw) isn't an issue. No way could I fit two 1200Ds
In my small van I now have two Aputure 1200 kits.

And thank you for a wonderful insightful video !
Something for everyone.
Thanks again Andrew- always the best review. I’m very curious about the reflectors and how they might work on the smaller LS lights. Have you had a chance to put them in the 600d and 300dII?
I think I'm going to have to do a follow up episode on this as everyone asks
@@gaffergear thanks.. someone on FB says there is a dark spot ( Dimple) in the middle.. didn’t say if it’s worse than the one you reported.
no, they are not backward compatible, use them on 1200d only
The big problem I see with this is the barn door situation.
Is the Godox M600D on deck? Saw a bit of it. No rosettes. You might like that. They must be watching your channel.
It is, I just have to find time to review it
Grt review as always.
@@gaffergear Makes sense. Hard choice indeed. Thanks for the reply Andrew. Your channel helps the evaluation of these things immensely.
Can I ask, what gel frame is that please? it looks like it has clips already on the frame itself.
Your channel is amazing ! So much information.
Unrelated question. I’m Looking to buy a portable electric generator to power Aputure 600D for studio use. Can you recommend one ? Or what specs should I be looking in that generator to power properly that specific light fixture ?
Did you buy one?
Damn good.
Magic arm with some super clamps may help, but you could just be adding more weight to the situation.
@@gaffergear Thank you very much Andrew for your quick reply and for your time. I never heard before of a magic arm. I will look into that. I will let you know how it goes.
Which light would you use more often? the aputure 600c RGB or the aputure 1200d?
1200D as sunlight through a window or bounced off a ceiling for a base room ambient, or through a 12x12 frame in studio.
@@gaffergear Do you use the aputure 1200d or the nanlux 1200 with frensel more often ? Also.. how is that aputure 1200d hot spot thru a 12×12 or a litedome 150?
When you say you left it in the rain, do you mean it was pouring and the unit was in the midst of it all without any covers? Could it stay like that indefinitely?
I've had one of these out in rain that would be a 7/10 strength, but for only around 8 to 10 minutes of downpour. I've had a few days of light shower and I don't worry about them at all.
Their is an operating limitation of (I think) 45⁰
@@gaffergear did you cover them after? Or took them out of the rain?
@@cubul32 uncovered, I have to admit I felt uncomfortable with the downpour, I would feel more confident if it had an IP classification.
Which do you prefer, this or the Nanlux Evoke?
where did you get that nano clamp? looking for one online.
Many manufacturers sell them. manfrotto/avenger, kupo have one and Matthews have one. Different names but I think manfrotto / avenger call it a nano
@@gaffergear Thank you for taking the time to reply. Big fan of your channel by the way. Much respect.
Is the dowens mount still so concering to you ?
It's been a while now and no one has stuck anything underrated on the lights. It seems people who want to hire these are smart enough to know what they are doing.
The biggest problem with these has been the zips on the corner of the bags getting broken.
Ouch! It must have hurt when you smacked yourself in the mouth while you were making this! :-)
Interesting review by the way.
On set accident between involving a c-stand not locked off correctly by camera department. Yep it hurt but it missed my nose and I kept my teeth.
It takes me about 2.5 days to film an episode because I get all my words right. If you look closely you can see on most of my episodes my facial hair is different on some shots, buttons are not done up the same, my controller is in a different spot. But this is the first time I got a facial injury between shooting days.

Hi Andrew, I recently purchased a 1200D, I'd love to be to do barndoor cuts with the hyper reflectors but there doesn't seem to be any, and the F10/1200D output isnt great, do you have any solutions?
Barn door cuts are very odd with those dishes, in using cutters on C-Stands but still not as good a cut as you can get with a fresnel
With the intent of high key lighting scenes, would you buy 4 600ds or 2 1200d? Thank you!
I guess the best way I can answer that is I have two of each of my highest powered light options in my vans.
@@gaffergear thank you for the reply! I suppose a more technical way to describe what I’m wondering is, if I need one powerful light source coming through something like a scrim, do 2 600ds right next to eachother equal the output of one 1200d? Or does adding lights not double output?
@@MrMacroJesseSky it would be very close to the same output.
Is the light head smaller than the 600d? It looks like it
It's slightly bigger
Can you change the LED when it blows?
I can't see why not, it would have to be done at a service centre, but by the time that happens the light may not be worth the cost of the repairs.
can the 1200d get very hot to the extend that you'll burn your skin
Only if you put your hand within about 20cm of the cob Gould you get a heat burn. The light doesn't output any ultraviolet wavelength so you can't get a sunburn.
Do any of the Aputure barndoors fit any of the 1200D reflectors?
I think I'll do a quick follow up on the.reflecrors and answer that question then. (As I didn't think to check that)

@@alexayala182 I would suggest getting a combo stand. This is a bit heavy for a c-stand I feel
What are all those accessories you used for doing the gel for the light?
I've found it! It's called Lowel Tota/Omni Gel Frame on B&H. The clamp can be of any brand, it's called super clamp double end arm.
Gloves aren’t needed for safety?
Not at all, very minimal heat. The only place that's hot is infront of the COB. But you would have to leave your hand infront for a while to get a burn.
@@gaffergear wow it seems the biggest difference from the ‘M18 is the necessity for gloves and power draw. The light output is comparable though.
nice review but please use F or T stops in light readings. Lux are just so useless to gauge actual output, especially at large numbers where, as you say a difference of 2000 to 3000ish lux is .1 stop at that light level. I"d suggest using ISO of 800 or 400 as a base.
why are companies so afraid of USB-c?
Compatibility with existing gear is my guess. Such as artnet receivers.
Arri M8 is less bright than Aputure 1200? Mhhhhh (13.28min)

the M18 is 5400$ so the space between Arrir and Aputure is narrowing.
