    Speaking of muted vs saturated - I need brands to come to a consensus as to whether "neutral" means "peach [between yellow-orange and pink]", "muted", or "both". Because boy howdy, that's a fun thing to figure out every time a new line launches.💀

    the saturation chart BLEW MY MIND! I had no idea! I'm olive toned and need to mix the LA Girl blue pigment into every single complexion product without fail but I was never truly happy with my color outcome. now I know why. the blue was making my products too desaturated, too grey. I needed to also add the yellow pigment back in because, now I know, I'm a saturated olive. incredible! thank you!!

    Hannah really has a point with saturation being the issue with the lightest shades in shade ranges. I am extremely pale, very nearly as pale as Hannah if not as pale, and definitely have a cool undertone to my skin. Thing is, just because I have a pink undertone does not mean that my skin is just baby pink or peptobismol pink. I am still mostly light beige, with some pink mixed in, and I’ve never met a human as vibrantly pink as the lightest cool toned shades in foundations tend to be.

    Next time you're in Ulta or Sephora, you should swatch Urban Decay's Beached bronzer if its still out there in the wild. It looks like rat poo on all my yellow undertoned, pale skinned friends, but on the pinky/gray/slightly olivey among us, it gives that, sun-kissed, slightly reddened, look that actually, looks natural. Cuz I am SO with you on bronzers for pale people looking orange and if they don't look like orange, they look like streaks of mud.

  • @SRoberts815
    @SRoberts815 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I’ve been thinking a lot about saturation because I’ve gotten into the “color season analysis” thing. I don’t think it’s 100% the way the truth and the light, but it’s a helpful framework for me. In thinking about why some people look better in bright colors (I’ve never been analyzed by a professional but I’m pretty sure I’m a bright spring) it seems to be related to the saturation of color in skin/hair/eyes along with undertones. But I’m over here perking up when I hear the lightest shade looks peach but still fair.

    • @TheBaumcm
      @TheBaumcm ปีที่แล้ว

      This makes a lot of sense, especially within the seasonal analysis, given the categories. I like Merriam Style here on TH-cam for her approach to cool (blue) and warm (yellow) based on color theory and muted versus bright. For me, it’s intuitive to look at what stands out the most (dark on me) and make sure that what is near your face falls there. I would be dark winter, technically, as a cool olive medium with dark hair and eyes. Every dark color looks good on me regardless of hue but cooler colors work slightly better. Muted is more important if I’m wearing light colors. Brights of any shade look garish.

      I'm pale with with what i would describe as a grey pink undertone and yeah the missha/purito bb creams in shade 21 and erstwhile CYO lifeproof foundation in shade 101 are/were the most flattering foundation shades I've found thus far. I'm realising now from the graphic Hannah shared that what they all have in common is low saturation. I find even if a muted shade leans a little more olive than pink, it's a million times more flattering on me than a saturated pale yellow shadow, or a saturated peach (I don't really understand how peach ends up classed as a cool tone in the first place). I feel like muted undertones must be relatively common, because all three of those products/shades have like a cult following. Ppl in foundation reviews will still say "this is similar to CYO lifeproof in 101". I can get by with the bb creams for my foundation for as long as they keep making them but now I'm on a bit of a quest to find a concealer with that muted grey pink undertone.

    • @juliaswistara
      @juliaswistara ปีที่แล้ว

      Obviously the point is that we don't want to have to use mixers to be able to get the right shade, but using shade adjusters is probably the best thing for people with muted or "unusual" coloring.
      When you're adding blue or green, you're not just making the product more blue or green, you're also making grey by canceling out the orange, red, and pink tones.

    I'm loving soap box hannah! As someone who has gone through trying too many foundations that rarely work because so few offer light options for olive undertones, all the 🙌 for calling out companies that don't recognize this!

      Medium, cool olive here you totally feels your pain, on a visceral level. Yellow or orange but never desaturated olive. So many bad pictures.

    Hannah - just try all - even bright or deep colors - of Suqqu blushes. They are so diffuse and finely milled I am almost as fair olive as you and have not met a suqqu shade that was too saturated for me yet. Even the blush that looks tomato red in the pan - used with a fluffy fine natural hair brush (the Sonia G sky soft cheek is my fave) it’s still entirely wearable and I’d have to layer to get any saturation. Japanese blushes - that’s what you want. I have discovered cranberry and plum and similar hues for deep olive skin are better on me than hues for pale pink or peach skin. Just we need a different formula than the US insane saturation. Try it! 😘

    Cosmic Brushes is the brand, and they are amazing. Such a low price point for how good they are. They did a palette last year that was just stunning and high quality. If you ever want to try a new brand, this company has something special. I'm in a mood also, so pass on everything else LOL! The Muse palette should be here tomorrow though haha. Oh yeah, I did order a Haus blush. I want to try it. But nothing else. For now. 🤣

    I am in a very similar mood to how you seem to feel here, so it was very satisfying to hear your extra spicy takes on everything! Also, that saturation/color graph is SO helpful!! That’s definitely answered some questions I’ve always had about my undertone (apparently, desaturated neutral). Thank you for that! I hope tomorrow is a better day for both of us ❤

    I had to jump myself off the ledge from buying the GlamliteXChucky palette by duping the vibes from my current collection. I've been on a makeup no buy since the beginning of the year, but had a Sephora gift card I was allowed to spend...and the new Haus Labs blush was finally the one. I've been lusting after that super vibrant cool-pink shade that's been on trend, and that blush was just it for me. I LOVE it and have been treasuring adding something actually new to my collection (not a dupe of something I already owned). It's my first Haus Labs product and I'm absolutely impressed!

    I suffer with you re: color, tone, and saturation struggles. Haven't found a foundation I'll wear yet. Just tried Haus Labs, closest one to me is too yellow for my comfort. Really thought I had it this time.
    Trying to explain this struggle to my best friend is painful. A true understanding of color, tone, and saturation is hard to find anywhere, let alone in the cosmetics realm.
    You are a treasure for this and many other reasons, and I'm grateful to you for your part in helping me to better understand these concepts...and for reminding the not-yellow-not-pink-not-one-tone individuals that we're not on our own out there.
