Got to meet Tua back in 2000. I randomly see him and his bodyguards walking around next to my work. His guards didn't want anyone talking to him but i eventually see him without them and run up to talk. SUPER chill guy! Got to chat for about 10-15min. Total fan and didn't expect someone at his level to ask me about what I did for work and about my job. Can tell he was a good humble guy.

Tua is one of those Top 10 guys from a massively rich time that, as seen here, actually had a damn amazing career. Ike vs Tua is an astonishing HW blaster fight. Ya, it was kind of a 'sad face' fight with Lennox, It felt like a ref could call 'no contest' at some points. :(
Glad to see Tua getting his props. As you said the stars just didn’t align for him, he would’ve been a champ in most eras in my opinion.

In the 90's Heavyweight Era Tua was a serious contender beat alot of top level opponents coming up.. if it wasn't for Lewis I feel Tua definitely would of held 1 of the belts his left hook was dynamite

Tua was in one of the best heavyweight eras in my opinion.
Being that of the same stature as Tua, I am barely 5’10. But I weigh between 224 to 238lbs. And I ain’t fat 17% bf. I can’t help but love the small heavyweights, from Marciano, Frazier, Iron Mike Tyson, Bert cooper, David Tua, James Toney ( at heavyweight underrated ) the small heavyweights aren’t really about anymore, they never really where. So seeing these men fighting the big guys and beating them. Was just beautiful for me to watch.
I remember being excited about Tua at the time...then the excitement fading.
What I'd FORGOTTEN was that my neighbor when I was a youngster--Tony Perez--reffed Tua/Ruiz. He officiated Ali title fights among many others when I was just a kid and he'd always give us boys a wave and a big "Hello!" whenever we'd see him heading off to work in his referee's shirt and bowtie. RIP, Mr. Perez. A legendary ref!
I'm glad you made this video. I always felt Tua deserved more title shots than he got. He beat so many top 10 HWs from the late 90s and early 2000s.

Still I'm a fan, and the guts it takes to be a pro boxer, I had 22 amateur fights and believe me the punches hurt
Tua fought as a professional HW and he wasn't even 6ft, that takes a lot of heart
Tua was very successful for his lack of height, no doubt if he was 6-5 he would of cleaned out the division

Great video! Life is very strange because I met Mr. Tua this weekend as he is now in the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame with Shannon Briggs, and Fres Oquendo! Check their Instagrams for the pictures!
Mr. Tua is the sweetest man you’ll ever meet, when my trainer introduced me I told him I’d stand guard in case him and Fres decided to rematch at the Hall of Fame and he had the type of laugh that lit up the room.

Jack Johnson was a bad man simply for his antics outside of the ring but he doesn’t rank up there in skill set with the more modern heavys.

That would have been a great fight, for sure... the 90s gave us lots of great heavyweight bouts, but a few were never made. "It takes more than a left hook and a haircut to beat Lennox"... priceless. Another terrific video.

Nothing strange about it, yer talking about an undisputed A Side vs a C side.
The 90s were talented yes, but the top dogs were very much the top dogs n those top dogs were American, Tua was an inconvenient Australian/New Zealander as far as the money men were concerned.

Nature does not gift both abilities generously.
And the rare ones who do possess both, may not be as lucky to withstand professional boxing politics.
Mr.DAVID TUA fits this bill perfectly.
Possessor of shocking power especially in the left and granite chin as IKE IBEAUBACHIi learnt (IKE himself being another rare gem to fit this bill).

This is a no brainer.
A prime TUA would have destroyed both Tyson & Morrison in their primes, quiet early.. As many showed during Tyson's & Morrison's prime, they both possessed great power and skill but could not take a solid punch, survive and come back.

You are right on the money on this one! Tua was his best at around 220 lbs. I wish he had fought mike tyson at that weight. I think tua was mismanaged when they allowed him to basically sit on the shelf for 2 years waiting for a title shot and getting fat. His team should have kept him busy and fighting tall fighters while waiting for a title shot against lennix lewis. We know that lewis had a glass jaw and if tua had his weight down he might have won by knockout. Also i noticed that Hollyfield never fought tua. We know nowdays that hollyfield was on steriods back then.In this day and age he would have been caught and suspended. They did not test for steriods back then.
Of course Holyfield was on steroids....dude gained 23lbs of muscle in 2 weeks.....training with roid legend Lee Haney.
Yeah, win or loss he could've had some decent money fights. I bet he could've made some scratch fighting Michael Grant or getting an HBO date or two. I think the Holyfield/Lewis draw also screwed it up a little.
Glass jaw? Lewis took bombs from Klitschko, Briggs, Holyfield, Mercer, and ruddock just because he got caught twice in his 15-year career doesn't mean he had a glass jaw
I don't blame them or him for waiting on that spot. Boxing is corrupt he may never have gotten another shot

Great video Rummy, I always wondered why Tua dropped off so quick, now you can see it was his weight and lack of dedication. Its a shame, as I think he had one of the top 5 left hooks of all time in the heavyweight division. Along with Joe Frazier, Joe Louis, Tommy Morrison and Mike Tyson. He was a very entertaining fighter, would have loved to see him in there with Tyson or Holyfield in 96 or 97.
You got it wrong buddy. Can tell you didn’t follow him. He issues with coach/management that almost made put him behind bars for life is what disconnected him from Boxing.. His off field dramas got too much it took him out the ring. He was robbed of millions mate. All his hard work. Gone. He came back after all the BS & had a pretty good run for an old fella

David, like a lot of fighters from that era, just never reached his full potential. Tommy Morrison is another name that comes to mind. The heavyweight division was so stacked in the 1990s that any one of the uncrowned gems of that time could definitely be a world champion now in this era. Ray Mercer, Tommy Morrison, Muhammad Dwight Qawi, Andrew Golota, Micheal Grant, Razor Ruddock... the list goes on. The 90s heavyweight division was the second and final golden era of heavyweight boxing. So much unreached potential and still...

Would've loved to have seen aggressive guys like David and Ray fair against Tyson, they probably would've beat him. He's never faced beasts like those 🔥.
For what it's worth, I had the Tua - Ibeabuchi an even 6 rounds to 6. Though I would have given it to Tua if pressed because I saw him landing the heavier blows throughout.
And Tua had Ike hurt badly in the end of the 11th Rd almost out

When David started coming in too heavy, I knew he was screwed. At 220 ish, he was able to get off quicker and that made a huge difference. Not sure he would have beat Lewis anyway, but that extra weight certainly did bot help.
He just had slow feet and head movement was not elite but who knows if he were about today he might have ruled. But you are correct timing is everything in life not just the boxing ring. Life is so unpredictable. Brilliant piece of video making here Rummy.

Tyson was a force of nature but as many showed he could take a punch and would have always been a candidate to get knocked out against the likes of TRUE HAMMERHANDS like Ike or Tua

Brilliant review Rummy. I remember Tua but not the reason for his demise. Ike, now I did think he'd beat Lennox but unfortunately he was mentally unstable. Saw him at the supermarket just down the road in Auckland, New Zealand a few weeks ago. Really nice guy, he's tiny though. I'd say 5'8'', 5'9'' maximum. Small heavyweight, pretty amazing what he acheived.
Prime Tua was the best combination of power/chin/stamina the division has seen since Marciano.

You are so right about timing and taking advantage of your time in the sun - to me, this makes the recent performances of Kambosos (against Lopez), Andy Ruiz (in his first fight with Joshua) Leigh Wood, Dmitry Bivol, etc all so impressive. They came out of obscurity and left with titles and a place on history.
I would also add that without the weight of a powerful promoter and A side status that so often worthy contenders are denied their rightful victories or their rightful title shots. Most recently, I think that Maxim Vlaslov at 175, Brian Castano at 154 and Matveu Korobov would have all had different futures and much more money in their pocket with A side status or even with impartial judging.
It's a shame that talent is not necessarily the only thing that's rewarded in professional boxing, do I appreciate the way you articulated it and for now it's just the way it is.

Love this video Rummy. I will share a Tua story. When Tua fough Lennox Lewis, I bet 8k on Tua to win. I know that might sound crazy now, but Tua could knock out anyone and I knew Lewis didn't have the greatest chin. Unfortunately, I made that bet a month before that fight and had no idea Tua would come in 20 lbs heavier than his last fight and we ever more immobile. I will never understand why he did that. Finally gets a title shot and comes in out of shape. So that sucked losing the money. And I had to laugh in Lewis' next fight when he got knocked out. I was just off by one fight!
Tua came in heavier in the two preceding fights before Lewis as he knew Lewis was the one he was going to have to fight for the title. He wanted more weight to absorb the power and weight of Lewis. The two other fights were to get used to the weight.
Lewis lost to Rahman because he turned up in South Africa far too late and didn't acclimatise to the altitude. It was talked about for near two weeks leading up to the fight and people asking if he'd made a huge mistake in not getting there sooner.
Nice video. Watching Tua decline was heartbreaking, such unfulfilled promise. I'm not sure a mythical "peak" Tua could ever beat Lewis or Holyfield, but he sure could have given Lewis especially more of a scare. Sadly I see parallels with Joe Parker, another talented kiwi Heavyweight. Great chin, fastest hands in the division, no real boxing skill. Parker actually looked much better recently in the second Chisora fight after Andy Lee got hold of him, but he reverted to type when tiredness set in. There is a common thread with them, a trainer that never got the best out of them.
I had Tua winning a close fight against Ike as well.
