This was extraordinary. These guys were and forever will be Giants in Jazz. The one thing that I loved about Miles Davis is he never let anyone define him or his style of music and when he was done with a certain kind of jazz he moved on and never looked back. I still love that Bebop period though as it defined what these guys were going through and that horrible, horrible drug period that they all experienced as an escape from reality.
I loved his fusion period, which many do not. Miles kept pushing boundaries. May these legends forever live on in our hearts and minds and we pass on this great music to our children and grandchildren for decades to come.

      I like your thinking.

It’s not about letting someone define you style. People put labels on styles to differentiate from other styles. Miles went to newer ways of playing which becomes another school. You contradicted yourself because you mentioned fusion as a style of Miles which he created or was part of creating that style because John McLaughlin had his approach to it as did Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul with Weather Report but all the of those cats played with Miles before starting their bands. Labels are just a way of categorizing music.

@nyvcr502 Actually, there was no contradiction, just a misunderstanding. I mentioned specifically his fusion period, but I was actually talking about Miles Davis as a whole, his music, his interviews, and his artwork.
If you have seen some of Miles Davis interviews, they almost never went the way the interviewer intended, so he wasn't defined, and in one of those interviews he said specifically that he would not allow anyone to define him.
Miles had cursed out interviewers during a time period that was a super, no, no. I agree with you that people use labels to define a music category, which is necessary. I also agree with you about all of the great artists who played with him or were a part of his bands, which went on as band leaders.
Miles Davis was a brand, especially on Columbia records, like John Coltrane was a brand on Impulse, both passing through bluenote to become much more.

Thanks for posting this! Bobby, Herbie, and Billy were all from the Pasadena, Los Angeles area. I remember a garden party our neighbors were having with Herbie and Billy playing. Bobby went to my high school John Muir High in Pasadena. He was three years ahead of me. To me they have that L.A. sound. Jackie is really blowing on this! Thank You!!

Great Bret! Wonderful interview, amazing gig! but excuse me if I correct the title: Perugia, the "capital" of Umbria Jazz, is written with only one g. A big and strong hug from your Swiss-Italian fan. Luca

There was a lady who had Jazz meetings in her apartment on Sundays. Back in the 1990's, she used to host some of the 'old-timers' who remembered when Birth Of The Cool came out. A lot of people from the Black Jazz community thought that Miles had sold out, after he cut his teeth with Charlie Parker, of all people. If you think about it, Gerry Mulligan is the most dominant musically creative force in the group, composing and arranging most of the material. Mulligan even had plans to reform the group years later, around the time these apartment meetings were taking place.
