    When i opened the timer box i was overwhelmed by the 5 differently colored wires but ur video made sense of it all and the installation was a piece of cake. Thanks.

    Thanks for the video...I had a big clod of white wires tied together with a wire nut in the back of my box. I wasn't sure what to do with them, so I was going to send this timer switch back to the retailer. Your video gave me the confidence to press on...used your wiring and it worked perfectly!

    The colours of the wires in my home are slightly different from the instructions in the packaging of the timer so I wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong. I spent 3 hours trying lots of different combo's (probably not very safe). I also found a bunch of white wires way in the back of the box (similar to another comment) which I had to connect as well. This video really helped. Thanks.

    Great video. Just went to replace my fan switch with a Leviton timer.
    But my switch only has a black, and white, and ground wire.
    Would this be because the feed goes to the fan first then loops out to the switch?
    Same goes for the switch beside it in the box that controls the vanity lights.
    How can I wire the timer in this situation?

    • @n.mcneil4066
      @n.mcneil4066 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I was hoping this would be mentioned in today's video which deals with power entering the switch first. This gives us a live black wire to hook up to the black lead on the switch. You have a power before the fan outlet box circuit. Perhaps someone else will comment but think you will have to run a length of Romex from another source to get a live lead to your switch box.

      Yes that seems to be a common issue. Leviton may have made a bad batch? I had to return mine. But later saw that Leviton will replace the buzzing timer with a new one if you contact them.

    Hi,
    After removing old switch, I only see 2 wires + ground copper wire. I got the same leviton fan timer switch. I don't see that extra neutral wire. Is that a requirement to having this switch working?

    • @GetDomesticated
      @GetDomesticated  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes this switch needs a neutral wire. Check the other comments to see another conversation about this same problem. A regular switch doesn't need a neutral, so sometimes to save a little wire electricians will leave out the neutral.

    FAST HELP!!!
    My switch only has 2 black wires and a green wire. (NO LABEL) which black goes to land, and which goes to hot? (Instructions don't say either)

    • @SrAMagistrado
      @SrAMagistrado 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First you need to find out which is hot wire and which is the switch wire. You can do this by using a non-contact volt tester like the one he used or a multimeter. Pull the switch out of the box, use the non-contact volt tester and touch each black lead. Obviously both leads will be hot if the switch is on. Turn the switch off and try it again, only one should get a prompt from your tester, mark this lead because this is your hot wire. Look inside your box, there should be group of white wires in there all tied together, they are your neutral wires, most newer homes should have this, and it is required for switches that requires constant power to them like this, bluetooth switches, wifi switches, humidity sensor switches, etc... If you don't have them, you're going to have to hire someone to run it to that box or your entire house. If you do have it, you're going to have to use a pigtail to connect to the neutral on your switch to the wall. A pigtail is a short piece of 12 or 14 gage wire. To wrap things up, the black hot lead goes to the black wire, the other black wire goes to the red wire, white wire goes with white, and green goes with green.

    What if you don't have a neutral wire

    • @GetDomesticated
      @GetDomesticated  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Normal switches don't need a neutral to function. Some electricians will save money by not running a neutral to the switch. This timer needs a neutral to function, and unless you can run another wire from a nearby switch or outlet then you are pretty much screwed.

    • @passedhighschoolphysics6010
      @passedhighschoolphysics6010 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      GetDomesticated Where I live, California, I can not recall ever seeing a neutral wire in a switch box.
      I guess I could connect the neutral to the ground. The neutral and ground are connected together in the circuit breaker panel.

    • @GetDomesticated
      @GetDomesticated  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is true, but I can't say if it's a good idea or not. All the boxes upstairs in my house have nuetrals. But i the basement doesn't. I'd like to put timers down there too.
      So if you try this idea and it doesn't burn your house down let me know.

    • @passedhighschoolphysics6010
      @passedhighschoolphysics6010 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      GetDomesticated Using some critical thinking skills here.... If the Green/GND and the white/neutral are connected together in the circuit breaker box they both have the same potential and are therefore electrically the same.
      The only reason we have a ground wire is so the current has another path other than you to get to ground.
      While not to code, I can't see how doing this would put someone's life in danger or cause a fire. The ground is meant to carry a current should the neutral become disconnected or broken.
      Let me know when you give it a try if you get a shock or your house burns down.
      I'm going to do it and I'm sure it's will work fine. The only reason the neutral is needed is the provide power for LED and timer circuit. The amount of current would be far less than one amp.

    • @GetDomesticated
