I'm in. For those of you thinking about Nick's course, just do it. The course is one of the best expenditures I have made in my film shooting since the 1960's. It's almost worth it just for the entertainment value alone, but he put what I was kind of thinking after shooting film for 50 years into a logical, easy-to-use method.
I backed and received their first project so if anyone is worried about the production, don't be...and the fact it works with Nick's method (which I already purchased and use) is a huge plus.
I have to say your "Shooting in Manual" course helped me find that 'A-ha" moment where the interplay of ISO-Shutter-Aperture finally made sense in responding to different lighting conditions. Your course has the clarity that so many others are missing. It gave me the confidence to take on some real estate shooting which has now grown into a real business and has made a significant financial difference. Many THANKS!
I purchased the tiny Reveni meter and use it quite a bit. It is a rather brilliant design also. I signed up to the kickstarter the minute it came up. Matt has a really good track record in delivery of his designs. It sure is nice that many of our Canuck neighbors are doing great things for the analog photography world.
OK MR Carver, all I wanted was a warranty. And thanks to you, I got it know ! and I finally will have a discount on your courses !! That's a bargain ! Thx for all your knowledge sharings , sincerely always a pleasure to hear you !
I have also become a backer to this project; predominantly because of the discussion with Matt and the host of the Sunny16 podcast. It’s a very, very informative dialogue.
Great on all fronts! I am a student of your class since last spring, and I supported Matt with his first meter, so of course I was excited for this one and supported it day one. Then I saw that your method was to be incorporated and I was thrilled! Now you are saying an update showing how to use the meter with your PMM, over the moon excited! Thanks for all you do, love your channel and love your classes
I've liked Matt since his interview with Nico. I am also an Electronics Engineer and I think Matt is a brilliant individual. I have backed the first meter on day one and with the spotmeter I was even in the first $2000 of backers. Really excited to get the spotmeter.
Awesome!! Thank you Nick. I am enrolled in your course and have been holding off starting because i don't have a great spot meter. Thank you for partnering on this meter!
Thanks for the reminder Nick, was on the list of things to do since I came across his first light meter on Instagram... Now backed via your URL above :-)
Nick, you’ve convinced me to take your course. Even though I’ve been shooting my film for 10+ years and have my process, there’s nothing wrong with continuing the learning process and bettering my photography. I’ll plan for it to be a summer school course!
Thank you for the introduction to this spot meter, I had never heard of it before. I have been looking for a spot meter and was just about to pull the trigger on a vintage one from Japan when I came across this. What an exciting product this is. I have subscribed and will evaluate your course for enrollment.
I have to say this video couldn’t have come at a better time , I was just about to by myself a Pentax spot meter even though like you said the price of these things are just going crazy and boom you give me an alternative I gladly jumped on ! Now I can’t wait till august ! Thanks for the good tip !
I bought that fancy big screen Sekonic and blow me down it gave me a major headache. I returned it last month. I never bought your course (though interested) because I did not own the vintage meter you own and felt it was too big to travel around with. I saw another photographer TH-cam channel review this meter and I was not sold. But now that I see you had a hand with this device and it will be included in your course, thats a double whammy. I’m sold! I’ll support the kickstarter and take my 10% off your course. Last time I supported a kickstarter I got gypped. But Largely in part because your skill shines on this channel and I trust ya. I’ll go for it.
I still use my old Soligor Spot Sensor I got used 20 years ago - built like a grey tank and recalibrated by Quality Light Metric. Love that heavy old meter, but this is VERY tempting...
Really great 👍🏼. Thanks for this chance. I bought a Pentax spotmeter after your course and I am so happy with this. This new meter will be perfect for my little everyday Bag.
Bought their hot shoe version for my M3. Could use some improvements but I decided to go with them because I wanted to support a small operation based in North America.
The two eyes open aiming principle using an illuminated reticle was developed by Glyn Bindon with Trijicon Weapon sights. It's a proven concept, and is used by US special forces in life and death situations, so yeah, it's the real deal.
You beat me to it- he started sounding amazed at that concept, and i'm like "dude that's just the same way you use a rifle scope." I would have thought most people were familiar with how to use common optics like that, that concept isn't unique to expensive Trijicon devices, it works on basically any one-eyed device.
Based on you mentioning this in the last video I've jumped on the Kickstarter campaign. Really looking forward to having this new tool. And, by the way, spending $200 on the precision metering course was the best thing I've done for my film photography hobby.
Good news about a well thought out alternative especially the size. I am skeptical about the pointing accuracy and think I will prefer a zone scale taped to the Pentax to lots of buttons. Would love to carry something smaller though! Bought one to check it out and to support the project.
Good timing on this. Recently, I dug out my old Canon 35 mm film camera and have been wanting to use it more. I was thinking I would do much better with a light meter and was just getting on your channel to see what you use and then try to find one of those. I have one of those Seikonic ones and have never had enough gumption to figure it out. Saw this video and immediately jumped on this kickstarter. Probably will take your course in the near future. Been watching your channel for quite some time now.

C'mon dude, why the Sekonic hate? Me, a L-558 fanboy for years. Spot?; EZ: twist a knob for Spot, remove lens caps, take your readings, hit Memory, and then Average, and....presto! A Readout showing your high, mid, and shadows, with an Average displayed. Hey, I graduated from photo school in 1980; we only used 4x5 view cameras- for everything. And then....it was a Gossen Luna-Pro meter. It could do Spot. But that took a special attachment! For ALL my metering needs, my Sekonic has done the deed. Ironic: the new meter has more Menus than the old. ;-) ps: I've never had a handheld meter failure, ever. Gossens, Minoltas, Pentax, or Sekonic. In more than 45 years of commercial work. Have you ever used a digital camera- as a "meter", and used those settings as a basis of Exposure for Film work? I have- and it works fine. Riddle: how do you get an "emergency Gray Card" in the field? Meter your open hand palm, and stop down (2) stops= 18% Gray. (old PJ newspaper trick)
As a purchaser of your metering course and owner of a dying Minolta Spotmeter that are really good news. But it is a bit annoying that you need a creditcard for paying at Kickstarter…
Great video thx. Can you share what batteries you use for the Pentax Spot Meter 5? I believe some models use 2 batteries and some use 1. Mine appears too just use 1. Thx.
For MY money, the best written television show of all-time is, "The Soprano's". 'What the hell does a 20 year old television show about mafia life have to do with spot metering?' The doctor recommended chemo to Uncle Junior, who was not really feeling going through chemo. Uncle Junior had a line, something to the effect of, "Doc, you tell me to take a crap on the deck of the Queen Mary.................10 minutes later, they're hosing it down." I've been procrastinating sending my Pentax 67 in for repair. Once I finally get off my @$$, I want to take your metering course, and if you recommend this spot meter (and it doesn't cost $500), then, that is good enough for me. Googling it RIIIIIIIIGHT now.
I have neither the spot meter or your course but I'm definitely interested in both. Would you be updating your course in the future to feature this product?
Any idea as to the projected retail price? I really like the simplicity of the Pentax meter...aim, press trigger, set dial to appropriate metering compensation, read dial. No buttons to push or options to cycle through. I'm intrigued by the size of the Reveni, though. Knowing the projected retail price might help to sway me.
I am not a film photographer and do not have a light meter. But both of these have always had my interest. Can a light meter and your course help me with better understanding exposure in digital photography? (And maybe one day film photography....)
What is the Reveni Labs meter made out of? It looks to me like some sort of moulded/pressed coarse rubber. Is it durable? How does it feel in the hand? That is the only thing that is holding me back at this stage. Thanks.
Hi, it is made from a high-end 3D printing process called Multi Jet Fusion, which uses powdered nylon plastic. The plastic granules are 60um in size. The result is a slightly rough texture due to the fused powder surface. The material is extremely durable in all dimensions and is UV-resistant.
@@mattbechberger3298 Unfortunately, it makes the meter look really cheap. I'm all for function over form but, in its current form, the Reveni meter looks more like an early mockup than a production piece. I'm hoping they reconsider the case design in future versions.
Full of features device. But I can't imagine how to meter spot precisely without through the lens view. I tried to emulate this process without success)
Hi Andre, the key to the success is that your meter-eye fixates on the target, this makes your scene-eye look at the same spot where the meter is aiming. Both eyes are focusing to near-infinity for this. The viewing lens on the meter prevents your meter eye distance or position from affecting the spot placement.
Hi Nick, I was curious to know what your thoughts are on spot meters apps for cell phones such as 'Light Meter' ? I'm sure it's not perfect but maybe good enough for everyday outdoor use? Thanks ahead of time.
Hi Joris, yes it does! You can see the entire internal screen up to 1.5" away from your eye, so there is plenty of room for glasses. I demonstrate this in the Kickstarter video on my channel/Kickstarter page
This is really interesting, but I have some issues with my vision (eyes don’t work together as normal) so not sure this is a good option for me. Looks awesome though!
Great stuff, what a pity I watched your review too late. As I was having same thought as you, how can it be better... Now funding closed. What a pity! But then found the website offers late ordering :-) Thanks a lot for the hints.
just to be clear, if i buy the meter, but don't enroll in your course, does that mean that there's a mode i'm not going to know how to use? or does the meter come with instructions on how to use the p.m.m?
I was all in until you described the method used to aim the meter. I have macular edema in my right eye so needing to use both eyes to aim leaves me out I'm sorry to say. It sounds like a great meter and I hope it's successful.
Hey Nick...is it the new Blantons "gold" that you have ? (Impossible to find) or the regular blantons with the little horse on top u have? I work for a high end grocery chain and we have some bottles of the regular stuff
Interesting functionality, but the aiming method is archaic. Thats how weapon system red dot sights started off in the 80s, and theres a reason they did not retain that form for long. Hopefully the next model you actually aim by looking through it.
I was looking at replacing my sekonic with this reveni.... seeing i watch all your vids right up to date.. i see you are still using your pentax.... so i guess this wasnt as good even now its well into production? lol
As interesting as this is, I think it's a bit unfair to the Sekonic meter, which has many more uses than just as a spotmeter in the field, and once you learn it, it's easy to use. I use an L-508, outside, inside with studio flash, ambient and spot, and it does very well for me. That said, your concerns about old meters and their prices skyrocketing on ebay is well taken.
I'll be taking a look in just a minute, but in the meantime I have the hulking Spotmeter V too (biggest viewfinder ever) and I couldn't help noticing that you have removed the battery cover on yours. Is this for protecting the batteries? Reason I ask is I left batteries in mine for no more than a month and I found they had leaked resulting in corrosion affecting the contacts. Cleaned off now and working again. Phew! But I also found all my stored batteries were leaking too. Which is weird. I know we have damp winters but that shouldn't happen should it?
It’s an incredible product because it partnered with you and it employs your whatever method. Therefore everything you say must be taken with a huge grain of salt. This video essentially becomes an ad for the meter.
Why they didn't put a flash mode??? It's like the other two meters got an awesome ambient mode but they LACK with flash metering. Why pentax didn't put on the digital spot flash mode? BIG DOWNSIDE SORRY HUGE DOWNSIDE. The one thing that the sekonic and minolta meters are superior on it. It looks like they build it up exclusively for landscape and not more applications of photography such as flash metering.
So it's not a replacement for my Pentax digital spot. It's a replacement for my Sekonic that I never use. Good to know. That's a non-starter. I hate futzing with digital readout crap anyway so problem solved. When someone designs something as elegant and simple as the Pentax I'll get excited.
Near the beginning of the video you bashed the Sekonic for being needlessly complicated: "The Sekonic spot meters, as accurate as they are, are so freaking bloated with features and functions and menus and buttons, and a bunch of stuff that just gets in the way of a very simple and clean and effective metering process" But then began to wax lyrical about a product that seems just as needlessly complicated, when comparing to the Pentax and, arguably moreso than the Sekonic - skip to 3.11 to see what I mean.
this is brilliant and I might back this but boy that 3D printed finish is ugly - and it doesn't look too robust. i wish the developer of this product would partner with someone who knows a bit about making a premium product like Peak Designs

I dont know Nick, im still on the fence here, Maybe if you throw in some of those fine OC Oranges from your tree??? 🤔😏
Just the orange? I want the mixed drink and some snacks.
Sooo, if your two eyes don't work very well together for some reason, this won't work.
Sign me up!!
One plus of the Pentax meter is that the electronics are easily repaired. The new small one is not.
There is no way not to buy the meter after watching this video ;)
Comment if you bought the spotmeter after watching this video!
It’s an incredible product because it partnered with you and it employs your whatever method. Therefore everything you say must be taken with a huge grain of salt. This video essentially becomes an ad for the meter.
Got the first!... Spot lol
You should've come up with a better mode name rather than P.M. People would think it stands for "Peter McKinnon" mode ;-)
So it's not a replacement for my Pentax digital spot. It's a replacement for my Sekonic that I never use. Good to know. That's a non-starter. I hate futzing with digital readout crap anyway so problem solved. When someone designs something as elegant and simple as the Pentax I'll get excited.
Near the beginning of the video you bashed the Sekonic for being needlessly complicated:
"The Sekonic spot meters, as accurate as they are, are so freaking bloated with features and functions and menus and buttons, and a bunch of stuff that just gets in the way of a very simple and clean and effective metering process"
But then began to wax lyrical about a product that seems just as needlessly complicated, when comparing to the Pentax and, arguably moreso than the Sekonic - skip to 3.11 to see what I mean.
Without real spot meter viewfinder 200$ is way too much. I would expect see-thru at that price. Just learn your Sekonic functionalities..
Any see-through design would be more expensive and complex to manufacture due to additional optics
this is brilliant and I might back this but boy that 3D printed finish is ugly - and it doesn't look too robust. i wish the developer of this product would partner with someone who knows a bit about making a premium product like Peak Designs
First 💪🏻
I use my phone as my meter lol
New = Glitches and bugs. Ill wait till several firmware updates have worked out the problems before buying.
