I became a deputy sheriff in 2002 I was 23. I remember my probationary year how the adrenalin would surge wildly when calls like this came out. My very first call came out over the radio as a 10-80 intrusion with the occupant, a lone female hiding in her closet. I was the closest at 18 miles away and I'm hear to tell ya its a very unsettling feeling when you know someone is in a life or death situation and its up to you to help. Midnite on a Saturday in January rural northern Maine can be rough. I put my high speed driving skills to the test this night, and really broke in that new crown vic.
Long story short, 3 miles from the residence dispatch tells me the intruder was scared off by the burglar alarm and took off in a red mustang, and within a mile he blew by me and the pursuit was on. Between help from state police spike strip and my PIT we shut him down 8 miles later. Homeowner was rattled but unharmed, bad guy had a few scrapes and I had to explain how I scuffed the fender of my brand new only 700 miles crown vic...ooops time to install the push bar.

30 years have passed since this happened. This happened on a Monday and the day before New Year's Eve. If a burglar is in my house, something tells me I would say “Go away” but on second thought, I shouldn’t say anything because who knows what he’ll do. I don’t want to think about it. I'm sure Carol said "Thank you" to Officer Montgomery and can never thank him enough.

Well it's kind of a trade-off. In a rural area there's a lot less of a chance that someone is going to break into your house in the first place, but if they do it's going to take longer for help to get there. I am currently living in the city after having lived on the outskirts of a small town, and I hear about way more break-ins on the news here in the city.

The report said the cops have to be shot with the taser before they can use it, so they know how it feels.

If you're in a bathroom, you have a weapon. The back lid of the toilet works great. Grab it, be ready, and strike as soon as they come in.

I live extremely close to where this took place. We have a lot of people from the North and West and all those places that come here for the lower crime, and it is true. At least real violent criminals. We just had three non violent criminals escape from a prison but all they did with their time out of the pen was post on FB. People complaining that they were eight minutes away have to realize that these areas are complicated in layout, there are metropolises dispersed among many many miles of back roads and rural areas. Cows and McDonalds and high end bistros meet in many ways around here and that is just another obstacle that good officers are able to tackle. That said, many officers of the Clinton metro area and surrounding areas are also bereft of any achievement or talent. There is good and bad, pros and cons, of any area and I respect this officer and the city they herald from despite constantly being looked down on for being from a more "incorporated area".

Most officers know their area and have a GPS unit, the only reason I can think of for emergency dispatch asking for directions is if the area is so rural that GPS does not know the location, an officer is new to the area and does not know his or her area, or something is wrong on the GPS/blocking the only known road. Dispatchers might ask for things that stick out such as a bright pink barn or giant tree, color of the house, etc if they need to, especially when it comes to backwoods private land that may not have an official street name.

Rescue 911 was popular before GPS technology was really popular in vehicles. Im sure they do now.

I wouldn't bet on it, not in some places around here. Sadly, when my friends mother was dying, while not in the county shown here, about half an hour away in Morgan County, they called EMS who were just one street down and they couldn't find their address. The husband having just had surgery on his ankle had to hop down his steps with a flash light, into the front yard and move it around before the Ambulance turned around and got to their house. It was on a well known road.
He told the dispatchers her history of COPD and that she was having trouble breathing and they arrived with no oxygen and didn't even bring a gurney in. There's also no hospital in that county, the nearest one is in Harriman, about twenty minutes away and the only one that can really do surgery is in Oak Ridge, about a half hour away (which is a decorated hospital, btw).
Morgan County has an emergency/glorified doctors office which is fine for helping people having allergic reactions or setting a cast, but when your life is on the line and you only have eight minutes/need surgery/etc you're pretty screwed in a lot of places around here.
Like I said a year or more ago, even with GPS, especially around the Clinton area and places like Wartburg, Oliver Springs etc, any roads don't show up, the google car doesn't bother with most of them, and the powers that be either can't pick them up by satellite or assume those streets are of no interest to the immediate public.

And she was sitting on it so she could just "let it all out" so to speak. And she did, oh boy it sounds like she really did poor lady. The fear must have literally cleaned everything out of her and then some. As the dispatcher said, she "felt relieved" that it was over in the very literal sense.
