I'm from Hungary. I'm 32 years old. Otylia Jedrzejczak is my biggest idol since I was 14. That was the year when she won her gold medal at the World Championship in Montreal. At the previous year was my favorite Olympics ever, Athens 2004. I was rooting for the Hungarian swimming star, Éva Risztov - who finally became Olympic Champion 8 years later at a completely another discipline -, but she lost against Otylia at the 200 m butterfly final on the 18th of August 2004. (At the time Éva Risztov's mother was a primary school teacher of my brother and I also know her and we also saw Éva at our school sometimes. So she was not just a fellow Hungarian for us, but someone we used to know.) While I was a little sad that our Éva could not grab any medal and finished 4th, I was happy that a Polish swimmer claimed the gold. Otylia's emotional reaction to her victory touched my heart. And even though I was just 13, I know a lot about history and the historical Hungarian-Polish friendship, which I really appreciate till this day. That Olympics was epic for the Hungarian sport and I think, for the Polish sport as well. After this Olympics I looked up more to athletes, especially swimmers. Unfortunately I was too old in 2005, a year later, when I realized, this is what would really make my life complete, if I could win a gold medal for my country and the sport I believe I could do it was swimming, the only sector I was quite good, because otherwise I was very thin, but not an athletic person. 2005 was one of the worst years of my life, but in July I got a really meaningful inspiration watching the World Acquatic Championship in Montreal. At the 200 m butterfly final I discovered Otylia is also there, and something happened at this point. Not only she won the race, but broke the actual World Record and I was crying. When she stepped on the top of the podium and cried while the Polish national anthem was played, I cried with her too. After this day she became my No.1. idol and she will always be. I wanted to share my little story, because I think she was extremely underrated and even though she did not won multiple Olympic titles, she won everything a swimmer could win and I was amazed that as a Polish athlete she could achieve all of that. (I think in the ex-communist countries it was quite harder to be able to compete with the world, since we did not have the same circumstances to practice. At least, this is what I have always seen in Hungary, that's why I idolize the Hungarian champions as well, but somehow Otylia is my all-time favorite.) Now I can proudly say I'm a huge fan of Otylia for 18-19 years already and it's on my bucket list to meet her. Otylia also influenced me to get to know more about the Polish culture and Poland in general. Around 2006 I started to learn the Polish language on my own, I know the Polish anthem by heart and in the last 10 years I traveled a lot to Poland. I even went to Ruda Slaska, where she was born, firstly in 2017 and secondly this week actually! We were just driving through the place, but I felt the special connection. I have an Austrian spouse, not such a sportsfreak like I am, but even he knows who Otylia is. :) Maybe that's why I'm writing this comment now, because I was at her hometown 3 days ago and I thought of her. I hope when Otylia may feels herself alone or not well in general, she can find my comment and will know that even if I'm the last international fan of her, there are still people who will not forget her and her achievements. For a little girl who was miserable and was not sure what to do with her life, she was the first inspirational figure. And I will be always thankful for that.
