The arrangements are by our Choir Director, Costas Manoras, who created a beautiful arrangement in 4 parts to the general Byzantine melodies. A few time signature adjustments I suppose, and you have the arrangements you here, including the Aghios o Theos. I must add that every time I sing at a funeral, I fill up with tears during this hymn.
Yes it is unusual for a Greek Orthodox church but this is a particular tradition of the Cathedral in London which drew much influence from the surrounding Russian Embassy Chapel in the 18th century. The melody itself is Byzantine, while the arrangement yes has a slavonic slant to it. I am glad you enjoyed it.
This is not "Slavonic style" it's the traditional Byzantine melodies set to 4-part coral music. Pretty much the standard for Greek Orthodox funerals with full choir. Very pretty! But not to be confused with Slavonic/Russian chant even if it sounds familiar to some :)
I notice the Cathedral choir here sounds more like a Russian Orthodox choir. Thank God ... the Slavic Orthodox music is beautiful unlike the painful chanting of the Greek Church and some Eastern European Orthodox Churches!
a very open and honest comment. I am glad you found it pleasant. Yes, I am partial to more russian style singing, and only manage byzantine when done properly, and only in small doses.
I will say the words were Greek though cause I reconized one of them(in taking Greek as my language) the word theos(not in Greek letters) means God and I heard that. But you are right the Russian Orthodox do have beautiful memorial chants. I'm actually Russian Orthodox
Memory eternal! It's doesn't seem that long ago that this dedicated priest served our liturgies. May God rest his soul!
Indeed. He was a very good man who you could see actually walked in the heavenlies before he even got there.
I'm Russian Orthodox but just last night the local Greek churche's priest was killed in a car accident. Very sad

A privilege to see this beautiful and moving funeral. Kyrie eleison.
I like the Slavonic style!

I was also shocked to see that The Greek Orthodox Church n the USA uses organs in some of its churches!!!!!
