Another classic re run episode, I have to say Richard I really did like these videos you did in a nice quiet village with lovely buildings and the nature and countryside, my girlfriend said its like we're actually on the walk with you watching this, once again another stunning village I would like to explore.
Another “classic”. Not sure how many re-run’s you are going to do, but any chance of seeing the “grumpy vergers” in the St Mary’s at Eastbourne video again, a true gem!! 👍👍👍👍👍

Speaking of your sheep and wool over there🇬🇧 I must say from personal experience it is the best! And warmest.I remember when I was a child my mother would take my brother and I all the way downtown to a clothing store called-fox's because they were the only place that sold-London fog coats because they had the British wool lining in them. They were really good quality and kept me warm in winter❄which is not always easy where I live in Ohio we get a lot of below 0 degrees temps ice+snow from our neighbors up north in Canada🍁

Great video. As Sean James Cameron says it would make a great cafe and could include a museum covering the history and importance of sheep ( especially the Southdown) on the Downs and further afield. ie the practice of ' buried in wool' . It was thought that the woollen industry was under threat with the introduction of eg linen and foreign imports ( that rings a large bell !!). So an act was passed in 1666/68 requiring that when a corpse was buried it should only be dressed in a shroud or garments made of wool. Failure to comply resulted in a £5 fine . Affadavits had to be sworn that this had been carried out. Often mentions of this happening found in Parish Registers
I remember enjoying this one the first time around! It’s a shame that the building (whilst in good condition) is boarded up.
My first thought was wattle fences then wattle and daub house construction with big timbers 👍👍👍👍🖖🖖🖖🖖🙋🏼♀️😘💕

At first, I was anticipating, a house, made of wattles, ie. before being daubed, with it's covering.
Then, I thought, mischieviously, that it was a hen house, filled with hens wattles . (too macabre).
But no ! It turned out to be an ex store-house, with guardian family (now in absentia), boarded up, as most Grade II listed buildings seem to be these days.
How wonderful to be able to have seen it in it's hey-day, with the sheep dogs on trial !
The penance being that they were allowed to chase the sheep for a while !
A dissapointment, that I was not able to see the sheep and lambs gambolling freely over the Downs .
Pleasant non-the-less !
I fear, I let my imagination run away with me !

I would love to live in Nepcote love it there and findon but Nepcote is beautiful

One of my favourite of your early shot walks. Incidentally, that last house in the street that looked refurbished was actually a complete new build!
From Historic England:
"Wattle storage house. Grade II listed. Built between 1792 and 1803, probably by George Holford who got permission from the lord of Findon Manor in 1790 to hold an annual sheep fair at Nepcote Green. This building was designed to store the wattles. Built of flint with red brick dressings. Slate roof with 4 brick stacks. Two to three storeys; 3 windows. Cambered window openings. Horseshoe-arched entrances to ground floor with double doors. A unique survival in a national context, one of a very small number of buildings which manifest the importance of sheep to the economy of the southern downlands. Hurdles for fairs were normally stored in the open."
Did you discover if occupants of the wattlehouses had caretaking role working in the storing of the wattles
You waffle,about wattles,but why were wattles wanted ?
Just an observation you don't mention the use for wattles.
It does seem strange to build a house to store them in when a yard would have been the easy option.
Did people steal them,or were they valuable?
They were sections of fence made from woven willow or hazel from coppiced trees. They were used to create the temporary enclosures for the sheep during the sales. Storing them inside was safer but mainly to help them last longer I guess

I know what they are,but i don't see why a house has to be built to store something that spends it's whole life outside anyway.
@@davidbarlow350 These wattles were only used once a year for the Sheep Fair.

Skins of turkey's necks or similar birds it seems
