Maybe people do not want to live next to low income. Why don't you rent an apartment in a building with low income people and tell me how much you like it for 6 months. Losing sleep from people making noise. People hanging out in the halls. Broken down cars in the parking lot. Trash all over the place. Yes please!! More of those people move in near me!
Gentrification is a loaded race word. Blacks always say that we need to build up our neighborhoods. So if blacks were to renovate black neighborhoods, are we gentrifying ourselves? So do we WANT our neighborhoods to look bad? When Magic Johnson came to LA bringing movie theaters, Starbucks, and other investment improvements, the black community applauded him for it. But if a white hipster brings in a Starbucks, suddenly it's a problem.
It has nothing to do with race it's all about capitalism. Most of these areas they tear down have low income people who don't pay a lot of taxes. Therefore they are a burden and the city does not benefit from them. The city needs tax revenue you won't get that keep them poor neighborhoods the where they are

Problem starts with this segment not giving a complete definition of what “gentrification” is. Nice wrapping paper though. They failed to include the part about the displacement of a group of long term residents that results from the renovation and that the neighborhood doesn’t have to necessarily be “deteriorating.” (Implying that people who don’t fit into the “upper” or “middle” class definitions all live in slums that are in sub par and in-need of rescuing conditions). The well off being displaced by the (financially) better off is what this amounts to.
Facelifts and improvement of property costs money. It's not free. By definition, for an existing property, if a richer person moves in, a poorer person moves out. If a poor person can't buy a house when it's dirt cheap and run down, then they aren't going to ever own. So they'll end up moving to some other rundown area. Beggars can't be choosers.
As a Washingtonian,it amazes me how people react to changes. They would rather live in deplorable,crime ridden areas than pull themselves up with education,skill training and become productive citizens as well as start their own small businesses in these communities. These construction companies will hire DC residents 1st. There are a lot of people who still have slave mentality,who are leeches. My only advice to the DC govt is to create a funding for small businesses especially in SE where Koreans rule,more hospitals,shopping and less liquor stores,carryouts.
