Squads are comprised of 6-11 men featuring at least two fireteams and are designated by callsign. Fireteams are comprised of 3-4 men and are sub-groups of the squad which are designated by color. A 3-man fireteam always sticks together, and a 4-man fireteam breaks into two buddyteams called alpha and bravo. Alpha is always commanded by the Fireteam Leader. Always be directly in front, behind, to the left, or the right of your buddy; there should never be an instance where a buddyteam is separated.
Following these rules will enable the swift construction of formations, providing significant tactical flexibility on the battlefield. Each formation is used to perform or counter certain strategies.
Formations are constructed on the squad or fireteam level. Each formation is built around the most senior leader. Expect quick and concise orders such as, “squad, line. Red team, right”. This order defines what the squad needs to do and where both fireteams are supposed to go. If red team is to the right of the Squad Leader, blue team will naturally form to the left. Fireteam formations are simpler, the Fireteam Leader will give an order such as, “fireteam, line right”. This is where fireteam members will position themselves in whatever direction and formation the Fireteam Leader desires. Fireteams should always be within a 25m area.
The Line is designed to maximize firepower down range by prioritizing contacts in front of the formation. Lines are most commonly used to face off against the enemy during Identified Combat. Identified Combat is where the enemy knows exactly where we are, and we know exactly where they are. Platoon lines perform what has been previously stated, but are also used for Screening. Screening is where friendly forces use their positioning to prevent hostiles from breaking through our formation.
The Wedge is designed to be as adaptable as possible, prioritizing security for quick reactions to the left, front, and/or right of the formation. Wedges are most commonly used for maneuver during Unidentified Combat. Unidentified Combat is where the enemy estimates where we are, and we estimate where they are. Platoon wedges perform what has been previously stated, but allow Squads to break away in case of emergency or tactical benefit.
The Column only has two purposes: easy means of travel from one location to another, and to maneuver the Squad or Platoon within an urban environment. Columns have 3 different types: Fireteam Column, Squad Column, and Platoon Column. For a Fireteam Column, one Buddyteam is to the left and the other is to the right. For a Squad Column, one Fireteam is to the left, the other is to the right, and Yellow Team divides at the rear. For a Platoon column, one squad forms a file to the left, and the other forms a file to the right. Fireteam placement for this formation is configurable.
The File is niche, most commonly used as a tool to create Columns. No matter the circumstance, 3-man Fireteams are to use the File instead of the Column when operating away from the Squad.
These formations are permitted to be altered for situational needs. Critical thinking and adaption to the environment comes first, just be sure to not waste time. A plan now is superior to a better plan later. The enemy will not wait for you. Do not forget to establish Sectors Of Fire.
