@GenericFunny I'd known about the Tony Levin with Stick Men version, yes, but until this very moment didn't know KC ever actually performed it live. Though the point was maybe a little vague - it's the single most KC sounding Fripp solo offering.
Been listening to KC for over a decade and some how didn't know this album existed. I'm honestly glad I get to listen to this for the first time right now! This song is simply incredible, it's like a sequel to Red, one of my favorite King Crimson songs.
I saw KC in 81 after this album came out and wow. The great Adrian Belew that played with a lot of my favorite bands. But Fripp stole the show in my eyes, he sat off to the side of the stage, out of the spotlight, sitting on a stool, in the dark, and you could see his shadow thrashing back and forth with the guitar whipping when he played then the tune was over and all the lights came on haha. I am very glad I was able to see this.
how is this not better known. my all time favorite fripp track. those drums, that bass... seriously, what's going on? that middle section... those frippertronics... this should an all-time classic.
I've always referred to this as "The Greatest King Crimson song never recorded", though just today found out there is 1 live KC performance from the European leg of their tour in 2018 that was released in "Meltdown".
@@DanMcOgden1 the middle section where it switches between 11 and 7 is so weird to count but Narada's over there playing with where the downbeat is and never getting lost. Beast
Many a drummer had a hard enough time trying to hold it down in 7/4 while adding those huge fills before the middle section time signature changes short circuited their brains completely.
"Breathless" is epic! A really dark and heavy Mahavishnu influenced masterpiece with the most intense, virtuoso and proggy- avantgardistic drumming you can think of ... from our beloved Narada 🙏
I remember back then referring to him as "Bruford only with chops!!" This is basically the song "Red" with a little more complexity and some phenomenally powerful drumming. Narada was one of the all-time greatest fusion/prog drummers...and could write his ASS off..."Sophie" from Wired is genius!! And "Marching Powder" from Tommy Bolin's Teaser?? YIKES!!! Tommy and Narada ripping it up putting Mahavishnu to shame!!
rather between Red and Thrak... although North Star is a prototype for Matte... you never know with this guy, except he remains so annoyingly consistent ;)
Breathless: The greatest King Crimson song never recorded
Lol!

That's what I thought upon hearing. Sounds like it could have been on Red.
Fripp just posted on Facebook about the early 1981 shows. Breathless was played.
Wasn't this in reference to Doctor Diamond?

Only Tony Levin could channel John Wetton's playing and tone while remaining so unmistakably himself. What a genius.

Amongst the "Crimsinati" it definitely is
Fripp is such the legend.
another brilliant realization of the "Hendrix meets Bartok" idiom - can't get enough of that

Narada Micheal Walden’s drumming on this track is terrifying, it just adds to the building frenzy of the piece, and this mix is just perfect xxxxx
Such a beast in 7/4 (and several other undetermined time signatures on that track)!
It blew me away in 1979 and still does now, life giving music🙂@@DanMcOgden1

Nightmare: You are in some fabric, and your head is being smashed to a pulp. Love it. You wake up and it repeats!
Thank You Mr. Fripp

Oh wow, this is the original mix, this is brilliant, love it xxxxx
Developmentally so valuable.
Thank you Mr. Fripp.
Narada Micheal Walden was probably the only drummer who could "replace" Bill Bruford on this track. Just masterfull!

Wow!

Aside from being a lot muddier, the middle section is totally Discipline melodically and much else besides.
Caught between “Red” and “Discipline”
