  • We're planting Milpa Garden Mix by Green Cover Seed. It's a foodplot for people and wildlife. The deer are going to definitely be attracted to this mix as a foodplot, but it will be a great" Easter egg hunt" type garden for us. #deermanagement #deerfoodplots #greencoverseed

    I really liked your video. I am also a fan of Dr. Grant Woods. Although I live in SW Georgia, I created my own mix using the SmartMix tool on the Green Cover website. Shipping was not too bad because they have a location in Mississippi. I am waiting for rain to plant. There is a chance for it next week. Good Luck with your MILPA garden.

      He's awesome. Very smart man, he has a research mentality, one of the best at learning from trial-and-error. He's had a lifetime experience with white tails and wildlife.
      I had only recently seen the smartmix option. Probably the way to go. Glad you could get it shipped reasonably. I was very fortunate to find local pickup.

    I know deer eat the vegetables from those plants but do they eat the leaves on them as well?

    • @WhitetailVideoMagazine

      Yes Rene. They will wipe them out. Especially the peas, green beans, sunflowers🌻, and several others they prefer. The leaves are really their favorite. I’ve got an electric fence around the 2 acre field. I plan on putting 2 guardian dogs in there for about 6 weeks to keep the deer out to give it chance to get started. Thanks for watching.

    What was your drill settings for the milpa seed? That is the same drill I rent from NRCS. Did you apply any fertilizer? How much and type? Thank you.

      I used 100 lbs nitrogen. Set it for sunflowers on the chart, 1/4” to 1/2”. 6-8 lbs per pound. Thank you for watching.

    Do you have an update video on what this looks like now? I'm curious what the final product looks like

      Patrick we turned our goats, and horse loose on it. We harvested some pumpkins, squash, watermelons and okra, but eventually the goats and horse started targeting the vegetables as they found it. Especially squash, watermelon, and pumpkins.. I did this because it was more or less a failure in my overall plans. In a way it is helping provide forage for my animals, so maybe not a complete failure. . I hope to do a follow up on this later. Thanks for watching.

    How did your garden turn out?

    • @WhitetailVideoMagazine
      @WhitetailVideoMagazine  ปีที่แล้ว

      It started off promising, but temperatures were unseasonably high 107 one day. And over 100° for eight days straight with no rain for a month. We’ll be watching for rain this year and try it again. Thanks for watching.

      @markcharlton9020 Actually I don’t remember. I went off the seed chart that came with the drill. I looked up sunflowers and went off their setting for 30# per acre. I wish I could remember.

    Has the PlotStart helped your plots? I’ve got a couple new plots that I’ve put the recommended lime and fertilizer on but they’re new so assuming the lime takes a few more months I’m thinking about using the PS as a helper. Thanks

      It has definitely helped me. Raised PH for me. I used a hand probe, and 3 months after I used last year it lowered to 6.6 from 6.9. I think it’s a good investment. Thanks!
