I really love that Bale completely understands and respects the way Malick works. I saw a video with Christopher Plummer talking about how much he hated the way Malick works, but it's nice to see that Bale just gets it, and he's open to experimentation and doing something different.
Lovely piece of art. Sadly a bunch of people didnt understand it and they say is a bad film. Judge by youself, think, pay attention and you will love this film
+Gabriel Castillo round one! Fight! (here we go ready?!) NO. let's tackle that first non-argument right away: "you didn't like it? Ah you just don't understand it". NO. I understood it just fine. But it was just a horrible 2 hours in cinema for me and the other six people in the audience. One of us just moaned: "jesus..." at the end of it and everyone had to laugh. Hearing Bale say these things now makes it perfectly clear for me that this had very little to do with filmmaking. This is not my first Malick experience. I do enjoy some of his work. But this is at the point he is either trollin' the hell out of people and see how far he can bullshit them for passing as experimental or he actually just lost his mind. This might be some form of 'art' but it was not an overall good 'film' and it is perfectly understandable if people react to it by saying they thought it was bad.. If you liked it BTW that is perfectly fine. But playing that pretentious "you just don't get it card" won't cut it. That is getting pretty old.
kurtnovells People nowadays enjoy movies when they explain everything! they dont like to think about existential and possible endings with incognitos. They like lineal plots withouh twists. I have to admit that in a beginning i didnt understand the movie at all and i was like "what the fuck i just saw" but then i rewatch it and i analyze every act and i understand even more. But like i say is not the type of movie for everyone, but that is not a synonym of bad. This movie was a journey for me
+Gabriel Castillo Fair enough. I love films that don't spoon fed you through all the way. I enjoy the ones that leave a lot for you to fill in between the lines. But this one just did not have the journey for me that I was looking for. Doesn't mean others can't have a good experience though... Wow that was settled pretty fast.
+Gabriel Castillo I agree. It's almost like expectation of life vs. reality when I read most of the comments. Very interesting how bored most of us where. Really liked it. There's so much to see in the movie (beautiful shots, great way of showing the thoughtprocess of somebody who's stuck, all kinds of caracters - intro en extravert). Just very very interesting.
No, I just didn't really empathise with the existential "agony" of a spoiled rich kid from Beverly Hills who is so vapidly disillusioned with his own wealth that he now fill his time with pretentious pseudo-intellectual musings which ultimately amount to him just looking pissed off and making no effort towards the supposed catharsis he felt he needed to get over his despair. Knight of Cups is the most pretentious movie I have ever seen. The photography and production value are meaningless to me if a film is this vacuous.
Terrence Malick = one of those great cineasts who owns his own language ! you may like or you may do not like .. but you know you are front to someone who is making an artistic process ! I can not watch his movie without being highly moved as well emotionally and intellectually ! what a man !
Terrence Malick is beyond Oscar and market like Scorsese i mean to some manner or every manner. And also Christian bale , and joquian kinda actors are made for him.
I'm glad Bale mentioned The New World I quite like that film and not a lot of people know he was in it in a fairly significant role, not a ton of screen time but certainly more than a cameo
Good interview, Macuga and Harloff need to get more of these to do! Hadn't really heard of Terrence Malick until now, this has definitely piqued my interest though, will check out his previous work soon.
I recommend The Thin Red Line, Days of Heaven, and The Tree of Life to start off with. His 20th century stuff is more traditional and narrative, while his 21st century stuff is extremely avant-garde and challenging. It may turn you off. You may hate it.
I was baffled by Knight of Cups for about 3/4 of its runtime, and then I realised how much of my own 'baggage' (perceptions of cinema and how a movie should be) I was projecting onto it and it was like I flipped a switch. I can't say that I "love" the film, but I respect it immensely - I believe that it is wildly ambitious in its reach. I also watched it without a full understanding of Malick's filmography, some glaring omissions that would inform his cinematic language / his approach of poetry-as-cinema. Malick has absolutely created his own lane, two of his films are probably in my top 10 greatest ever film experiences (the extended versions of The New World and The Tree of Life).
+SuperBad He was already making good films before he dove into "CG fest action comic book movies"; Empire of the Sun; Swing Kids; American Psycho; Little Women; A Mid-Summer Night's Dream; Laurel Canyon; The Machinist; etc. People forget he's been an actor since the 80s, and a diverse one at that.
Malick has only made 3.5 good films. I love those. But Christopher Plummer's assessment of him seems more realistic than the fanboys or sycophants who want to work with him and are willing to justify his tedious excess.
Only 3.5 good films for you. I love everything post tree of life, hidden life is one of the best films from last decade, and his older films are mostly classics even if im not into all of them, for example im planing to revisit new world and maybe like it more. Dont judge movies on one watch sometimes things unfold better on repeat viewings and malick is director like that.
+GeneralZ Not a year, nor odd - movies (especially small ones) rarely get a global release at the same time. A lot of people never get a chance to see for instance all Oscar nominated movies before the ceremony even if they wanted to, because the movies aren't out in their countries. This came out in some European countries last autumn, not last April (it had a film festival premiere a year ago, but that's another matter), and it is now getting released in other countries, including US. This happens even with big movies; for instance The Martian was just released in Japan in February this year.
i know there are usually at leat a few months apart for some countries. but places like the us generally will get a movie fairly soon. certain;y for an american movie.
GeneralZ I don't know the specifics here and why earlier release schedules were changed. A few months difference between different countries is not unusual, though, and this time it went this way.
I feel sorry for actors in Malick movies. He barely gives them anything to do onscreen, he makes them do most of the dialogue in a whisper using voice over, the dialogue that they are given isn't realistic at all, and he thinks shots of trees and water are more important than story and character
***** I guess what I'm trying to distinguish is whether you have a gripe with him or the writing? ...Because Batman is just used for like action sequences.. The story is about Bruce Wayne. But look at me..lol. I don't need to probe super hard into your opinions. Carry on, bro.
For some people this movie was a glorified 2-hour long perfume ad. For me it was a spiritual awakening.
I really love that Bale completely understands and respects the way Malick works. I saw a video with Christopher Plummer talking about how much he hated the way Malick works, but it's nice to see that Bale just gets it, and he's open to experimentation and doing something different.
".....anyone who gets involved with a Terry film they know that look I'm either not in the film or I might be the lead in the flim." LOL
poor Adrien Brody xD
and many other actors from The Thin Red Line, who were left on the cuttin groom floor
Guido Anselmi Gary Oldman never even got to be in the film as his character got cut out by the time they got ready to shoot.
Underrated comment.
There is it. The indelible and unforgettable mark of a Malick film. A brilliant actor like Bale could get that. I am delighted they worked together.
Lovely piece of art. Sadly a bunch of people didnt understand it and they say is a bad film. Judge by youself, think, pay attention and you will love this film

The Dark Knight of Cups
lol I thought the same thing
Lol
Haha nice !!!
😂
The best comment ever..
One brilliant world-class artist appreciating another of the same caliber. So cool to hear about the process
Bale looks so intense
Christian Bale is such an interesting guy. Short but very interesting interview
Terrence Malick = one of those great cineasts who owns his own language ! you may like or you may do not like .. but you know you are front to someone who is making an artistic process ! I can not watch his movie without being highly moved as well emotionally and intellectually ! what a man !

WorldPrez Yeah Bale was very good in that movie. Farrell outshined him in the lead role though.
Has a significant role in the extended edition
i love bale, beautiful actor .. open and true
"...I'm either not in the film, or I might be the lead of the film." That's how you know you've made it.
I simply cant wait for what I see could be the pinnacle of art from Terry and Christian. Going to adore this piece of my life through this film.
An fascinating interview, with Christian giving loads of interesting insights on working with Terrence Malick.
I really like these junket interviews. Hope to keep seeing them.
The great Christian Bale.. you were the perfect Bruce Wayne.. to me.. you still are..
Great guy! Can't wait to see the film.

Check out Thin Red Line.... My favorite of his

+0=Axel=0 The New World is also a favorite of mine.
@@rev2376 The big caveat being that, if you watch The New World, you should absolutely watch the director's cut.
Love Malick
+LupeJustinian
I like The New World and Thin Red Line quite a bit
I'm loving the interviews u guys are doing

woah I've never met an actor who's actually been willing to be cut from the final film
One of the Best Films i ever saw
Imagine being an actor who was fortunate and skilled enough to do three films with Terence Malick.
Opens in Toronto this week - can't wait!
Imagine having to make a trailer for a Terrence Malick film.
One of my fave actors for the psycho movie and batman begins...
And uh...a couple more.
Very fascinating
Just amazing
The trailer makes it seems like it's actually going to be a out something.. like some real intense thriller... Then it begins and it's just like...
Feel like its a glimpse into Maliks personal life or runs parallel from an artists pov
"...works like no other director"
Wong Kar Wai? Fallen Angels, Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love?
Comparing Malick to Kar Wai is comparing apples to oranges.
Зачем титры вставлять если время читать не даете?? И то что удавалось поочитать- ахинея!!!
consummate professional
Wats on his left wrist ?
Lol a bracelet
+Derek Lansky no It looks like a Scooby Doo, or whatever those things were called
chris matthews a scooby doo?
Probably something his child made for him. Also...what is a "Scooby Doo"?
Christian Bale in Mad Max sequel, villain. make it happen
Christ! Is he in method-actor mode for a role as a 19th century market trader?
You guys should talk about the justice league trailer with the animated series music
Please Christian bale for Deathstroke in the DCEU

I'd pay to see Malick's version of 2 Girls 1 Cup.
It's a tough life. You're not Christian Bale.
why are people still talking about a film that came out last april and wasn't even hugely popular?
+GeneralZ Because it's only getting a wide release now
okay. odd though, how they wait an entire year.

I agree, Bale was nothing special as Batman. Good Bruce Wayne, but not the Batman we deserved.
+pubixcube27 ...Your avi kinda makes me hate you.
but his movies were great
***** Weren't a fan of his voice? Or the suit? Or what?
turtles wasn't a fan of anything he had to offer as Batman besides the tech he used throughout the trilogy.
***** I guess what I'm trying to distinguish is whether you have a gripe with him or the writing?
