Scleral lenses can be one of the most difficult contact lenses to put in your eye. These lenses are usually prescribed for patients that have keratoconus or other corneal irregularities. They are called scleral lenses because the lenses fit and rest on the sclera, not the cornea. These lenses have amazing benefits, and can sometimes give a person their best vision possible. These lenses will also likely be used as Virtual Reality Contacts in the future.
These can also be used to treat certain dry eye conditions as well. Check out my video explaining how it does this:

Getting the Scleral lenses was a life change for me after wearing regular RPGs for 20 years.
I do have severe astigmatism and finally found a doctor to recommend these.
Not cheap, but the $3500 for them was well worth the price (I've heard they can even be more than that).
Quite frankly, I love them for comfort, not so much on insertion and removal but I'm getting used to it. :)

I just started wearing these. I am on day 5. I hate putting them on and taking them out. My husband has to help me and it takes about 10 tries each eye . My eyes feel so tender and tired but the eye sight is absolutely amazing. I don't know that i ever saw this Clear in my life. But taking them out today was a nightmare. I couldnt get the right one out and my eye was in pain. I think i did push it in wnd cause it to suction more . My husband helped me get it out . I am going to keep trying.

Just starting out with mine and was having trouble and pain removing them. The doctor watched me and said I was pushing so hard with the plunger that it was causing the lens to suction down tighter onto my eye. Hope that made sense, lol. Anyway, I'm trying to lightly tap lens with the plunger. Your tip on breaking loose the lens suction has been VERY helpful! Now I do that first and have experienced a great improvement in removal. Thank you!

Thanks for the video, it's excellent! As an alternative to the S5 Inserter stand (which is currently $299), you can put a drinking glass (one that lets light through) upside down and place the DMV plunger between the two sides of a normal pair of tweezers. Then you can hold your eye open with two hands, and move your eye down onto the contact, which makes insertion much easier and more reliable for me.

Loved this tutorial. I use a kitchen funnel to hold my insertion plunger. Turned upside down on a table or mirror, the wide end holds the funnel stable, leaving both hands free to deal with eye lids. I was also taught to put a light under to help line up the lense and my eyes. Wasn’t taught about the suction trick for tacking them out. I will try that. Thanks for a great video.

    Hey doc! Great video!
I’m in my mid 60’s now and I’ve had keratoconus since my teenage years. I have been wearing RGP corneal lenses since high school.
I am getting scleral lenses next month. They look so huge it’s a bit daunting!
I’ve been wearing RGP corneal lenses for so long that I don’t have a problem flinching when something gets near my eye, so I’m coming in pretty confident about being able to insert and remove them easily. The vision and comfort with my corneal lenses is no longer satisfactory so I’m looking forward to the improvement in vision and comfort.

I've been wearing one for corneal scarring for about a month now. Still working on inserting it consistently (sometimes I get it in on the first try, but usually it takes me between 5 and 10 tries), though I've gotten pretty good at taking it out. Another commenter here suggested warming the saline solution, so I'm going to try that to see if it reduces my blink reflex. Also, I was taught the method of holding the plunger with the lens in one hand and using the other hand to hold the top and bottom lids open. I'm going to try the method shown in the video of holding the top lid open with one hand, and pulling down the bottom lid and inserting the lens with the other hand.

My tips for people experiencing inconsistent comfort levels 1) try different saline solutions 2) when inserting, make sure you’re applying enough pressure - for some reason I get suction but if i don’t push a LITTLE further, illl have fogging issues after some time. 3) when removing if you get it right on the edge, think about a gentle peeling motion, up and out. Go slow.
Obviously bring up any issues to your eye doc because it could very well be the fit needing adjustment. But these tips improved my experience greatly

Now with a scleral in place my vision in that eye is decent, so I am very grateful for the technology and not needing a corneal transplant....BUT I'm still a bit cranky about it as I was quite happy only wearing glasses for reading pre-crab topos.

@@DrEyeGuy Not that you care, but prior to my corneal transplant in 2006, on my right eye, I was wearing a small RGP lens on top of a soft contact lens, and wearing glasses. It was uncomfortable when the lenses were in place, and unbearable, when the hard lens would slide into the lower corners of my eye, especially while driving.
I swore to myself, never again will I ever wear another lens. However, 16 years later, my vision has worsened, and my ophthalmologist suggested the scleral lens. He said another transplant wouldn't give me any better vision.

You must had a very dedicated optometrist who will not compromise fitting the lens to each eye. The fit must be absolutely perfect - no corneal contact, especially in keratoconus or post-transplant patients. The initial price is so high because the manufacturers must re-do each lens until it fits just right and that may take several fittings. When it’s right, the vision is outstanding (at distance) and the lenses feel natural and comfortable.

Sorry to hear this. If it makes you feel better... this is a fairly common complaint/occurrence with some scleral lens wearers. The causes can range from a slightly tighter fitting lens, to a more sensitive eye when the air hits the surface of the cornea and causes that type of reaction. Sometimes it can be tricky to figure out why it's happening.

Im attempting to try everything before I get a corneal transplant for my left eye. I have very bad Keratoconus in my left eye. How exactly does this lense work to correct whats happening? Best way to describe what I see out of my left eye is : Normally, you have a circle of vision that is in focus like a cone out of your eye, the center, and the outer, is periphial and not in focus. Mine has flipped basically, where the outer edges I see clearly and the inside cone is what is out of focus, unless something is 0.5 inches away from my left eye then I can actually see out of it (which is why my surgeon Dr Rootman in Toronto) wants to do the transplant, since I still have such good vision behind the deformed cornea. Does a scaleral lense counter-act what the Keratoconus has done to my eye (make a cone of the cornea?). Just wondering if its worth the trouble to do. Transplant scares the shit out of me.

Got mine today to cure the NK/cornea damaged due to a vitrectomy and IOL replacement surgery I had to remove a huge floater I developed back in December of last year and to replace a misalign cataract lens. The problem is that I had complications during surgery while performing the cataract IOL replacement. The floaters are gone but the the Retina specialist never got to replace my new cataract IOL lens. So I've been without a IOL lens since March of this year.
The Cornea specialist Dr. recommended this special Scleral lens and at the time of measuring and getting the process ready I pass the eye test no problem to have it. However, today, was my fitting and it was disappointing and a let down. I still can't see very well with it. Total distortion and I can not focus with my good right eye. They said that I need to get use it and my brain to adjust since I've been without the lens for 5 months. But I can't see how! My vision with it on is like putting someone else's glasses on and I am getting dizzy. So I don't understand. Is this normal?
They double check my Scleral contact lens prescription and eye test it and it seems to be correct but I am having this weird vision distortion effect. I am not happy and it looks like I just wasted so much time and $$. I even did the Oxervate 8-week treatment as well prior to heal/replenish the cornea nerves I also have or had..I just don't know at this point. I still have them on my left eye that I had a vitrectomy on even though they are small and not the worm like floaters I had before the surgery. It’s just not worth the risk. It is really a gamble when you have eye surgery. I am now regretting it. I now have to wear a Scleral lens on my left eye due to an incompetent eye Dr. I am going to see another Cornea specialist and see if I can get a special IOL cataract implant so I don’t have to bother with the prescription Scleral lens. However, I will still need to wear one for the dry eye/NK that was damaged due to the surgery complications. But it will be a non prescription Scleral lens that I can put on when needed onlyâ€Ķnot all the timeâ€Ķ.

It can. I have many patients that see better with scleral lenses.

Yeah, don't "wet" your plunger or any of your lens/supplies with tap water. Use saline.

Wow, interesting Dr eye. The contact looks uncomfortable. It's huge!

It is huge, and the one in the video is a "small" version of scleral lenses. 😎

great tutorial. talks fast. the only thing I would change is AVOID tap water at all costs. A drop of sterile unit dose saline on the removing plunger does help, and safer than tap water.

Haha, I was wondering if anybody would notice that. That clip is from a tip video I did, this one showing if you have the plunger suctioned too tight it can hold on to the contact too much. It was just a good angle of putting the contact on the eye. Nice catch. 😂

I hate myself for having this condition. I’m the only person I know whose stupid f n eye ball jumps in and out while trying to put the lens in. I got 1 foot eye left and once it’s
    Bad I’m done!

No way...no matter what I prefer "old" way to put in contact by just tapping it with your finger tip. No need to put a bucket of fluid into your eye...

Nope. Sorry, despite vision issues that these jokers "might" help with, I could just as well put cereal bowls in my eyes. I initially thought these would just be larger soft lenses. Rigid?? NO way.
