In the novel at least it was clearly stated that he has always told his lovers that he is not looking for permanent relationship but just friends with benefits type of thing. Xuan Ji knew that before they started their thing and she still fell in love and tried to force Pei Ming into a proper relationship with her by breaking her legs after nothing else worked. Pei Ming still took care of her after everything she did (even if he didn't love her he still cared enough to not abandon her). Otherwise it was good ❣
