Every time I think about going back to be near my family, which I would really love, I just can’t seem to do it. The thought of living there makes me very sad. But what scares me is The thought of getting used to it

I lived in Jamaica Queens close to brick town. Anyone from Queens knows that's a rough area. Every morning I grabbed my sidewalk broom and swept the gutters. Nobody paid me. After 3 months , other streets followed suit and cleaned their block. People behave differently when someone else shows everyone they give a damn about where they live.

    1 - Don't litter
2 - Clean your own sidewalk, because some scumbags always litter.
3 - Not everybody wants to hear YOUR music all day long.
4 - Have some common courtesy and get out of the street so cars can go through.

This reminds me of what the Bronx looked like back in the 80's when I was a kid. When visiting family in Philadelphia as a child, I loved walking down the quiet streets and seeing these homes; My paternal grandmother had a detached home and had beautiful grape vines growing all around the top heading of her house. It is so very sad to see this blithe. Why can't the state sell these homes for like $1 and offer grants to home owners to revitalize these neighborhoods? I'm also upset to see the few people who live in the community allow garbage and filth to just sit on the streets making it a breeding ground for vermin. Pick up a damn broom and sweep your sidewalk!! A neighborhood can't run itself down only the people who live in it do. Thanks for sharing the video. Peace and love~~!!

I'll never understand why they have such horrible houses and nice cars. Like the money the spend on cars can be used to fix their homes. Guess that's why they live like that.

How about there are no jobs here, they have to travel farther out for work. Don't be so quick to judge what you don't know. Cars are very important, they are not suped up and got trims shining etc, they probably own their homes and have to have a car.

Angela Perez I live in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Most people afford living in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, Jalisco and come to work to Guadalajara, all because the affordable houses are in there (Tlajomulco). They don’t spend a lot of money in cars, they take a bus and come to the city. My nieces live in Tlajomulco and study in front of my house that is the closest Guadalajara can be of Tlajomulco and it takes them one hour and a half when there’s no traffic and it can take more in mornings and nights with traffic. Now imagine someone who works or studies even farer. So don’t come and tell me I don’t know how it is because I see it everyday with family members and coworkers.
They are spending money in a stupid way, that’s why they are like that.

W P I’m not white, I’m not a boy and I’m not rich, asshole. I live in other country and have to take a bus to my job everyday that takes between 60-90 minutes and I’m a lucky one, there are people who live so far away that have to take a bus for 2 hours or more because people here prefer having a nice house and fix it before having a car that you can buy later. But your stupidity makes you think everything that is against your dumb beliefs is because people are white.

This clip showcases the extent of illegal dumping in an urban area, and how the debris can persist when it is not put out properly for pick up and disposal (4:26). Yet, it also highlights how dwellers can keep their frontage remarkably clean and tidy looking (7:57) by putting in a little effort. This might be the "extremes" that your title alludes to. I very much see the decay in the neglected areas, but I also see a little rejuvenation, if not persistence, in an otherwise difficult living situation. Thanks Charlie, for the clip.

I got lost on foot about 15 years ago in some place just off Fairmont Park. I believe it was Strawberry Mansion -- one of the scariest moments of my life. Some guy dressed just like a pimp (maybe he was one) was following me, asking questions.
Some of the downtrodden areas have gentrified. Others, like Strawberry Mansion, are apparently at the early stages of gentrification and reinvestment. The houses might be beat up, but the location is good in a lot of these areas.

But in all honesty, a majority of the cars parked on the sides are priced well below $5k retail, most below $3k private party value. Easily affordable to anyone who receives government benefits, child support, yearly child income tax credits, etc. Rent and drugs being cheap and easily obtained is the icing on the cake to these people. Its all one gigantic financial game going on back and forth between the poor and the government.

Totally different from when I was a child growing up. Things had just started getting bad before I left almost 40 years ago, as home owners died and their children move away. HUD took over and everything went downhill. If people can't find decent jobs, they don't make money to put into the neighborhood - and the city couldn't care less.

Wow. All of these beautiful old buildings -- have so much potential! And, if only the people in these neighborhoods cared enough to clean up the trash -- and keep it clean -- it would make such a difference! I can only speculate that all of these places were built during the 'heyday' of Detroit's Booming Automotive Industry -- for all of the Auto Plant workers with their families needing a place to live?
But, yeah, If they would only clean up the outside of the properties -- literally get out there with trash bags and brooms -- they would feel so much better about themselves and their community! It cost 'zero' dollars to clean up trash if a community comes together and does it collectively. It's sad to see the potential that's there -- and yet, nobody cares.
TO: CharlieBo313 ------ >>> I just discovered your videos and I love all of them so far !! You're giving us an opportunity to see how other people live in areas that we would otherwise never see! Everyone always promotes the beautiful side of their cities -- the commercials on TV, the sitcoms and the internet never show the side that you're capturing in your videos! And, I think that you're highly intelligent and brave to go into these neighborhoods to film as you do! It is something that not many people would think to do -- except you. You're brilliant! You're an out-of-the-box thinker!
I live in a suburb of Los Angeles, CA, and you would think that if you were to cruz Compton, CA, and Ingelwood, CA, that you would find it to be mostly inhabited by African-Americans -- but that's not true anymore -- not today -- not in 2018! Compton is slowly being taken over by Illegals from Mexico -- Compton is probably about 85% Hispanic now -- hardly any African-Americans reside there anymore. And, that's just so amazing to me -- WILL ALL OF THE NEIGHBORHOODS in your videos be taken over by them as well? I guess only the time will tell !! And, the sad part is -- the illegals refuse to assimilate -- they don't want anything to do with our American culture. Here in L.A. they drive their cars blasting their Mexican cowboy music as they fly their mini-Mexico flags that they attach to their cars!
Love your videos! They are so very interesting to watch! I feel as though I'm riding along with you!

Hey Nancy I was.born and raised in the heart ❤️ of north Philly in the 60’s. Every Saturday people were out cleaning steps, sweeping the block down and the sanitation dept would come by and further clean by water spray from the trucks, was a beautiful place to live back then and neighbors cared about one another. I no longer live there as well. Always remember and love ❤️ Philly bc of my roots there.

This is around Temple University which has always been a rough area. Rather recently Temple has been pouring money into near by developments. It's bringing cleaner environments and investments to the area but it will be some time before we see this area flourish. It's a shame. These areas have alot of potential but the city ignores them

Joe Kaye Manhattan, San Francisco, Boston - three of the richest cities in the US. All governed by Dems. Dallas is blue. Houston had a dem mayor until recently. Austin is booming - also blue.
Out of the 10 richest states, there are only 2 that are squarely republican - Texas and Georgia. And the areas of Texas that generate most of the wealth are all blue or purple - Dallas, houston, austin and San Antonio.

This is my home town. When I'm there, I feel like a child again... Memories of my late father flood my mind. When I watch videos like this it feels different. Not to be misunderstood... It absolutely looks like this. Just reading all the negative comments from people who likely no nothing about the 'hood' makes it FEEL different. Kind of like embarrassed or ashamed... But moreso mad or annoyed that I can't even defend my hometown. Just know that if you are making negative comments that indirectly insult the people who live here... The Universe won't be kind to you. BLESS.

When dealing with poverty, especially within the inner city, you have to take ALL factors into consideration. You'd be surprised what you find out when you actually do the research. Be humble and don't judge because you don't know the pain that plagues these communities. Systemic oppression is real.
