    I like painting in both oils and acrylics. They both have their advantages and disadvantages and like you said it depends on what your preference is. Over the last couple of years I've started using water mixable oils and it combines the advantages of both oils and acrylics and is a great alternative.

    Fantastic video Lisa! Not only did you answer every question I had (as someone looking to bridge back into oils after doing acrylics for several years), but you are a master at making things funny, having good popups, etc. Love the way you didn't let on which half of the painting was oil vs. acrylic until the very end.

    LOVE THIS VIDEO! I love that you emphasize an artist's skill and willingness to explore and experiment with different materials. That's ACTUALLY the difference you're seeing when you compare oil to acrylic or really any painting to another. SO much is at play besides the material choice.

    Great video. I had recently been thinking about which medium to choose as the one to focus on, after having swapped back and forth between each. This video has summarised the pros and cons clearly, and helped me to finalise my decision. A lot of it really comes to one's way of painting - I like to take my time, as it's a meditative experience, so oils are better as they don't try so fast on the palette or brushes. But I will use acrylics when I want to paint with a palette knife or paint abstracts. Thanks for a very useful video!

    I watched that other video you mentioned 9 years ago when it came out and believed it... and invested a lot of money in many different mediums. The advantage is I found 3 I really like, to do some really cool painting with, (a flow medium, a retardar medium, and a gel) but now, I usually use water. It's just easier. I do break out the mediums if I'm really struggling with my paint drying too fast like on sunsets, (Might be a skills issue there.. 😂), so I'm going to have to try your fine mist sprayer and see if it works better than what I'm currently doing. Thanks for the informative video.

    Thanks! I absolutely love oils, but was considering switching to acrylics for convenience (clean up, drying time, etc.). But I’ve already invested in a lot of quality oils over the years, and am used to oil techniques after many years of practice. I was torn because of the expense of starting a new medium and learning to use it properly. There is always a learning curve in a new medium. Thanks for pointing out the myths. I’ve painted in oils off and on for 20 years, but also do watercolors. I’ve learned that I don’t need to use the toxic turps, as there are alternatives for oil brush cleaning. I guess I’m that messy painter you were talking about. 😁. Need to work on that. I live in Arizona now and find it more convenient to paint with oils outside rather than indoors as I live in a small space. Thanks again, your advice is so timely. Love your Patreon channel, by the way and highly recommend it! I’m thinking of starting to work in colored pencils after watching your amazing colored pencil bird pieces on Patreon.

    Fascinating... I didn't know about Mona Lisa Oderless medium... so thanks! I switched to acrylics just because of how much the oil paintings I made began to reek as they dried. I used to put them outside under the porch and wait for weeks.

    Thank you for this, very useful and informative! I suffer from migraines, which can be triggered by solvent smells, so I’ve been avoiding oil painting for this reason, now I know I don’t have to! I’ve only just started with acrylics, but as I’m used to watercolour I don’t find the drying time so much of a problem yet as I’m used to having to work quickly!

  • @megancrouch
    @megancrouch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I’ve always been more keen on acrylic painting because I’m impatient and like things to dry faster! I have obtained oil like results as far as blending goes when using a paint retarder medium with acrylic (that way I don’t have to spray the canvas as much with water!). For me acrylics are just much more straight forward as far as supplies goes, you really only need the paints, a brush, and some water! But i also have terrible adhd and acrylics personally give me less mental overload. I have a mental block with oils for some reason and its harder for me to get started with them! Even the water soluble kind. I absolutely love both mediums, and I appreciate your take that each is good, each can give good results. I’m tired of the art elitists saying one is better than another. So I appreciate your straight forward and non judgmental content. At the end of the day use what you love to use and make art!

    Thank you so much for posting this! I started painting with acrilicos in 2012 but i took a break from it for a little bit. my teacher didn't really teach me how to use them so i thought i was just bad at painting in general. Then in 2014 i found all these videos online about painting and decided to try again. But the summer of that year when i was home from college, i watched that infamous acrílico video you're referring to. I got super scared because no one told me about this. I was painting on acid free poster board but this made me want to avoid canvas altogether especially because comments were disabled so i truly thought it must be true. Then i started seeing videos from people who work at art supply stores say the same thing. I got so scared of paint cracking and the honeycomb stuff that when i had to use canvas in my painting class, i would use very think paint with little to no water. While i liked the effects, it was very anxiety inducing every time i did a light dip into water. I know you made a video in the past addresding it, but it feels very good to hear a modern day version.
    Oh and i only started with oils back in december. I use water mixable oils by Cobra. I really like them and i am thankful that your video has alleviated a lot of my anxiety. For the longest time i thought i was gonna blow up my house because i was using oil paint. My mama used oil paint for years with no problems but i was still scared

    Thank you so much! As a kid watching Bob Ross's painting videos, I thought "beating the devil out of.." the brush was cool then I realize now, wow, that was not a good practice. I wouldn't be surprised whether bad practices sent some of our beloved old masters to an early grave or of course the toxic materials they used. 🤔

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Oh for sure! Bob Ross's videos were so fun but I'm shocked at how little anyone addresses the danger in that one regular action! I'm not even afraid of solvents myself but WOW that made me cringe!! The masters used to put their paint brushes in their mouths!! Just NOOOOO!!! I'm glad we have more information and safer alternatives today!

      The fine mist sprayer I use is for misting plants... super fine mist. I know another artist who uses one called a micron sprayer from a hair salon supply shop. I love the results... but like you said, it takes getting used to. The expensive mop brushes I tried all shed, even after months of use. The blush brushes are amazing. I got mine from a beauty supply store and they are called Eco-tools. They are brilliant. Thank you! (I added specifics for the other artist who commented. Maybe it will help.)

    How do you take care of a large brush for smoothing acrylic paint?
    After all, the acrylic on the brush will dry quickly, and a washed wet brush will wet the paint.

    Huh! That's really interesting and reassuring about water to dilute acrylics. I've seen a few videos on YT by some very seasoned "old timer" artists who have pushed the anti water theory. So I largely stopped. But, as I work with glazing techniques, it's much harder to get a lot of the same effects. Sometimes you just NEED water... And personally I've never seen any of the negative things they claim (paint peeling from canvas, etc), even on pieces decades old. I thought maybe I just got lucky. But its very reassuring to hear your thoughts. I've picked up some FANTASTIC tips from you in the past.

    I started oil painting with Holbein Duo Aqua oils. They give off almost no smell but I was only using walnut oil as a medium, which isn't water soluble, so I decided to switch over to M Graham oils, which are walnut oil based. I noticed that the M Graham oils seem to give off a lot more odors than my previous paints do. I'm becoming more sensitive to scents as I get older so I'm not sure if I will continue with the M Graham paints. I have M Graham Walnut Alykd and Gamlin Solvent Free Liquid. I've been thinking of switching to one of those as my main medium in hopes that the paint might dry quicker and it might cut down on the odors.

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've only used the water soluble oils by winsor and newton YEARS ago. I didn't like them. I had to mix them with regular mixing medium (liquin) to thin them. There are other alternatives, but that's what I had on hand. My main complaint was that they were SO THICK and chunky! I'm sure other brands have different qualities, heck, it's been so long the winsor and newton may have improved. Because I mixed mine with regular mixing mediums to get them to flow nicely, I still had to use solvents to clean the brushes, so that pretty much defeated the entire purpose of being water soluble. Maybe one day I will try other brands, but to be honest, regular oils don't scare me so I don't see any reason as an artist to bother. As a youtuber I'm tempted just so I can make a video about them.
      There are a lot of amazing artists who only work with water soluble oils though so they can obviously create beautiful work if that's the route you choose to go!

    Great video. I have a question. What do you do with the leftover paint water after painting in acrylics? With oil paint I let the paint particles sink to the bottom of the paint thinner and pour off the clean thinner at the top to reuse. Then I wipe out the sludge and dispose of it that way. With acrylics I have a container of water that does not separate. I believe that lots of people just pour it down the drain (even though they shouldn’t). I can’t do that because I have a septic system and that would wreak havoc. I have searched the internet for a satisfactory answer to this question in vain. Can you suggest a solution? Really love your channel and your work. Thanks.

    Great video Lisa. There exists in the forums what I call "tutorial junkies" that parrot a lot of nonsense. Had someone attempt to school me on the water to acrylic ratio. Couldnt seem to get across to him how absorbancy of the surface factors in. My favourite acrylic surface is gessoed watercolour paper. You can thin all you like with water because the absorbancy of the surface acts as a binder and its great for building those underpainting layers. Later I use open medium with my soft bodies for blending. I usually give the surface an airbrushing of matte medium before gloss varnishing.

      UGG, those forums. I can't do them! We see the same thing in most Reef Keeping forums too. The amount of misinformation is painful. For too many, once they've made up their minds (or seen a single wrong video /facepalm), they refuse to look further into it! The crazy part about the "don't use water" folks is there is NO proof. You would think there would be photos or videos showing you negative effects if they were true. Yet even without this proof, they're still running around spreading that misinformation. /sigh.

    Great video! My only wish is that you, and other artists that makes videos, inform viewers that when using acrylics or watersoluble oils to not pour the water that you’ve cleaned your brushes in, down the drain! With oils we learn to let the jar with solvent and paint sit and after a while it’s separated, so you can reuse the solvent and dispose the paintslug in a environmentally friendly and safe way.

    I have very old acrylics and oils that I've never used. They actually belonged to my mom... That's why I still haven't made up my mind about which I should get started with first... I can draw quite well but I've never painted anything with a brush. I mean, I've just only used pencils and soft pastels... Is it safer to open the acrylic tubes rather the oil ones? They are really, really old... 😨

    My Tip for canvas board back tape the board to a bigger canvas board so you can easily move the board around without getting paint on your hands. Back taping is when you tape the back of the canvas leaving tape over hanging so you can run tape aroung the bigger canvas board. If you still don’t understand. No problem just look up AUTOBODY backtaping technique. you can use this technique on a small to medium canvas & tape it to a piece of plywood if you dont have a easel or to your draft table if you would like to paint using that angle & so on.

    Great video. I made a ventilation system out of a fan, dryer vent, and plastic board, ie plastic card board. It works well for smelly art making. I also use a respirator from a paint store, with a charcoal cartage. This works well for me. And suggest to others to make a ventilation system if they feel the need. I also have my tea, or other drink, away from my painting, so I have to reach, or get up to get it. Hope I never try to put my brush in it. And I have a container that is to big to hold, so I will not try to drink from it.

      It's not non toxic. It's supposed to be more "natural" and less toxic, but it is not non toxic. I had a HORRIBLE reaction to that stuff. I actually talked a bit about that specific product in this video but edited it out because it was so long. Now I wish I had left it! /facepalm. I should have left it! Some may never have issues with it but it caused my throat to close up and for me to feel like my lungs were tight. I've never had those issues with Mona Lisa Odorless or Gamsol so those are far safer options for me. On top of my reaction to it, the smell took FOREVER to go away. I'm glad there are alternatives but that one is a big nope for me personally :D

Maybe the paintindustrys will develope a new sort, a paint with a new binder that can hold a plenty amount of pigment and is smooth like oil but is not yellowing and dont smells like oilpaint. a paint that will be possible to thin down with nontoxic medium, is easy to remove from brushes and hands and had a drytime that is something between oil and acrylics without any additions to it. something that is flexible like acrylics and vibrant+non colorshifting like oil. I hope it happens while I am still living.

    I know exactly which video you are talking about with the water and acrylics! It is a load of nonsense that water degrades the acrylic paint. I think the issue arises because adding too much water to the paint can cause beading on the surface instead of washes of translucent paint which doesnt really happen when using mediums. The beading isn't much of an issue with porous surfaces like paper, but gesso primed canvas coupled with cheaper paints and lots of water can result in the beading effect. There is a fine balance of how much water is needed which differs depending on the painting scenario, it is something that is very hard to describe and show on video. The best method is just practice and find what works best for you.
