  • Protesters plan to hit Kenya’s streets on Tuesday after calling for a nationwide strike as they seek to pressure the government over controversial tax reforms that are before the parliament.
The government has warned protesters against engaging in violence and has insisted that they must wind up their agitation by 6:30pm local time (15:00 GMT) or sunset, whichever is earlier.
The government is trying to implement austerity programmes recommended by the International Monetary Fund, which has provided billions of dollars in loans to Kenya in recent years.

To me as a Gen Z, i regret waking up early to vote for somebody to represent us . and instead of him/she going to the parliament to defend us. Know there the one who are voting yes so that Kenyan to be overtaxed. And after that he/she stands in front of the media saying,"(i voted yes where will they take me)" .

@@davidongalo7865 but it is about Kenya and the West. To act like they're not connected is naive. The high taxes is a result of IMF and World Bank loans, loans that come with conditions. The people who lent it, western capitalists, see potential for profits.
If the money can be misused that's even better, more room to lend more to continue making money out of the people.

The 90s was marked with multi party protests.... The early 2000s with university protests.... Then the 2007 post election violence showed that generation what happens when you are too trigger happy and they became cautious.... The general elections since then have had an air of caution shrouding them... I believe that Zakayo has just pierced that Ceiling.... Kenya is about to witness very trigger happy protesters with the might of social media behind them.... Zakayo has crossed a psychological line that will most likely send him packing in 2027

Spot on, wealth distribution is the problem here. It’s the problem in most of the world I might add. You can’t increase taxes to an already struggling majority and expect no backlash. If the majority of Kenyans were at least in a comfortable middle class, some of the proposals might have flown, but nope, a government wants to increase them and continue spending it on themselves and their cronies. Shame!!!!

This is a simple issue. Cut government spending & salaries, increase tax on the rich & multi national companies. One way to regain revenue without disrupting the living condition of the poor.
