I have had this knock off for a year now. Carry it with a pistol nearly everyday on my hikes. I absolutely love it and have had zero problems with the material or the zippers. It zips and unzips smooth and easy. I have it loaded to over capacity, I can’t help myself with all the pockets lol. and it very comfortable.

I think the idea behind the company mission statement is that some are considered losers or "weird" for being interested in certain activities, and they want to provide the supplies to be able to enjoy those societally-weird activities? That's how I interpreted it.

I agree. I think they are humbly, but tongue-in-cheek, saying "In China, going camping and traipsing about in the woods are considered past-times for lay-abouts and losers. You should all go get a job slaving away in a factory." So this company is saying "Yeah, we know that we are 'losers' but we are passionate losers, and we have a life! Go suck eggs!"

100%, have to remember that Chinese culture wasn't ours to begin with and has been hammered by forced changes for multiple generations. There was some serious nature aversion used to get people into those cities, though I understand now they're forcing people back into rural areas and have established a new police force to make villages more like cities and facilitate forced labor on cleared land they had been reforesting since the 70's.

80 now I have no need for either of these items I have the 60 year old pouch with a flap closuer that my grandpa made me some 70 years ago from an old leather jacket that he had worn since the begining of time . My grand mother told him one day at lunch she said charly if you wear that kacket in public one more time I'm going to burn it. Well that was it he ripped the linning out and made abunch of stuff for my dad myself and his brother . I have done nothing to it over the years but treat it with oilevery year at new years with all the other leather items i have it takes almost 2 days to treat them all . He also took my grand mother shopping so she could okay the purchase of a new leather jacket which I also wear to this day. I bought the Feiwood about a year ago. I bought it mainly because of that back pocket because I like to take my firearm out in the woods. I took a chance at that price and I was pleasantly surprised. The quality is good at that price point. I also keep medical gear, compass and other items up front so I don't have to take off backpack. It has good storage pockets and webbing for all stuff I want to carry.

I was even able to make it fit my large size easily. THANKS for the heads-up on this one Luke! I agree with the other posters who think that the weird name doesn't translate into loser. I think they are tying to say they are outdoor NERDS, (aren't we all?) which makes more sense than loser.

Just purchased and received the Helikon-Tex Numbat about a week ago and will be using all this week in Alpine Lake hikes. I was looking forward to the Numbat as it seems it will meet all of my needs and I was impressed with its construction. However, after watching your review, I'm starting to question the price of the Numbat. I returned another chest rig that about half the price of the Numbat because I thought it was cheaply made and offered less storage (your review of the Numbat helped me immensely in my decision). We'll see how it works out this week. Thanks for the comparison!

I was thinking about buying the numbat. But now with this thing out, I might reconsider. Firstly, I don't carry guns. But that extra pocket on the knockoff seems like a perfect size for a small water pouch that won't get in the way in the main compartment. Secondly, I don't really have much use for all that molle webbing so it this case, less is more for me. And lastly, saving 30 bucks is always welcomed. I am really glad you made this video, otherwise I would have never found out about this.

In regards to your mention of seeing loose threads, this isn't a reflection of build quality. My $700 LBT plate carrier had "loose" threads on every stitching. This is to ensure the stitch has been completed. You can always take a lighter to them if it bothers you. 👍

I’ve made the mistake of buying “copy” versions of name brand things before. Last one was a backpack that was basically a copy of a very popular travel backpack. I used it for about 2 years and kept thinking about how I gamed the system. Then while traveling and going through a security check a zipper came loose. It basically rendered the pack useless and I had to rig tougher a solution till I got home. At home, there was just no way to repair it. So now I actually do pay attention to the zipper quality.

The only thing I notice was on the Numbat front pocket design what is in the pocket won't fall out when you open it up while wearing it but you're limited as to what you can put in them. The Feiwood outer pockets look like they will hold more but may fall out when opening the rig while on you. S&H

I’ve had my Numbat about a year now and I did think the same initially. However I have found that it does have some stretch in the material that does not compromise the performance and the amount of gear I can put in it astounds me. It can actually take more than I would ever need in it now as I needed to remember Keep it Simple as for a while in there I had my Sheath Knife, Large Fero Rod, 2 Leathermans. Long spork, a KFS Set, 4 Parachord bundles, 2 compasses, camera mount, EDC knife, a Hand Auger, 2 Lighters, Fire Starting Kit and other accessories in it which was ridiculous. Had to unload the thing and remember to carry only what I need available in there.

I looked everywhere for a portable fence to set up on my campsite so my dogs wouldn’t have to sit outside on leashes, I bought this brand of portable fencing and it is as or more sturdy than I expected. I have a 31 pound dog that is like a tank and she went through a lighter weight fence like it was invisible. She has yet to get out of this heavier one and I was able to get up 24 panels for less seriously for less than the eight panel namebrand one and I guess my thought is you can only be so sturdy. I am extremely happy with my Chinese fence.

  • @markperry222

    A good comparison review thanks.
Thoughts. The slightly wider FWG might cause a problem with rucksack should straps, especially for people with a small frame. That is speculation, but it would be interesting to know how they compare.
The lower quality zips and buckles may not be an issue, as the loads that they will bear are not going to large.
The lack of a cover flap for the front pockets on the FWG would let water in on rainy days, but not a problem for fair weather hikers. It would be useful to have a hole in the bottom of the pocket to let water drain if it did get in. That could be easily and cheaply done. However, on the plus side, without the flap it would make it easier to stash small waterbottles, or quick grap items like a compact camera.
Just my thougts, but what do I know?

Helikon-Tex slyly doesn’t list the country of manufacture. If I’m not mistaken, the Helikon-Tex is also made in China, like everything these days. So it’s not completely fair to refer to the Feiwood as the “Chinese” version. They both are Chinese, but the Helikon-Tex is targeting overseas customers, whereas younger upstart companies such as Feiwood begin with the domestic Chinese market, and eventually expand to overseas once they hit a certain performance benchmark.

The brand Feiwood has the same sounds as the Chinese phrase for useless person or 废物. The Chinese characters literally translates to useless object but is used primarily on people. Hence, the relation to loser.

I do this a lot. When I see new gear, I look for cheaper knockoffs to use first to see if it would be something I feel I'd use all the time. Then I will invest in a better version product.

I got the Feiwood because $93 for the Helikon is a bit much. Also the Feiwood has that extra pocket which I can keep my ccw in. Can't wait to actually go hiking in it and test it out.

Personally ai would buy the cheaper alternative. Simply because it is good enough. 99% of people only need GOOD ENOUGH level. Only 1% need GOD TIER stuff. How ever, many people buy god tier stuff to look cool and show off. That is what I think they mean by the "loser" texting. People are often looked down upon using cheap gear. The manufacturer probably wants to change this.

Thanks for the review, Luke. However, I own a similar piece of gear from Hill People Gear, made in USA. More expensive than both, but from what I see from this review, better quality and functionality than either.

I’d definitely try the knockoff. But I’d trust the numbat to outlast the other. The nylon and the thread are of less quality. Weight test would be interesting to see the point of failure. Thanks for comparison.

Hi Luke! I like that Numbat you have; almost bought one for myself. I found a sale on Osprey for the Archon Chest Rig, so I bought that instead. I really like it: it has lots of pockets and I can get my small point & shoot into it along with my phone and some snacks. It should last forever, it feels very durable! I’d give you more stats, but I’m afraid that they don’t make it anymore. I hope that FWG works out. It would add to a lot of people’s kit at that price!

Luke, helicon is a Polish company but I bet they are still sourcing from Asia. Maybe not China specifically, but Asia. Another chest rig to look at is made by Viktos, called the Low Key Chest Rig. I have both the Helikon and the Viktos. They are comparable in price but the Viktos is a tad thicker and can carry 3 rifle mags as well as other gear, if you chose to use it that way. It’s worth a look. Viktos is an American company but sources material from Asia.

Like the zipper pulls on the cheaper version. The black tube helps from getting the pulls caught on things like limbs. While they are both nice, if they were sitting side by side, it would be the price for me. I would go with the cheaper as I don't wear or use alot of chest mounted items and would probably end up using it as a small storage bag for items that I would need quickly. Or it would end up being placed at the top of a backpack or attachment on said backpack.

I have two interpretations of their mission statement.
    1. They are trying to make a name for themselves like the Anti-Social Social Club merchandise. The "We are weird but we don't care" crowd.
    2. Their product is targeted at airsofters or people who like to LARP(Live Action Role Play) as military. The pricing reflects thus. You don't need your gear to be as durable for airsoft.

Helikon probably sources the materials from China and manufactures the product in Poland. The chinese one also has a second part. So, is helikon really worth more than double the chinese one?
I think you need to do a durability test to really come to a conclusion

Another great review! I feel like if youre not actually using the knock off version for "tactical" uses, it would be a good generla use. the main thing i was thinking about using it for is that itd be good for fishign to keep some gear on you. Barring wearing a fishing vest.

For how many adventures you used the Numbat? Use the next times you go out, the Feiwood and see if it will still be good after some trips. My experience with cheap chinese equipment is, that often the buckles or zippers and stuff like that breaks after a few months.

1st, in reference to the name. I wonder if something was lost in the translation. 2nd, if the Numbat had a second pocket, I would be willing to pay what they are asking for it. I like their products also but I am considering going with a Hill People rig.

I really think the 511 chest rig is slightly more functional than both of these and is at a price inbetween. It isn’t as large, but that makes it easier to wear your pack with it. I would be interested in your opinion on it!
Having worked with manufacturers in China during a college internship, it’s very common for companies to sell schematics between themselves. Linus Tech tips had a similar issue when making his screwdriver. This copy seems like a similar situation.

Helikon Tex stuff is great. But it's too expensive. And for some reason, every dealer I have bought their gear from has been a complete let down in one way or another. I've had a terrible buying experience with getting my hands on the product.
